PeruIncoming Mail1790 circa. Folded cover from Cádiz to Lima, denoting the route with "Por la Coruña-Buens. Ayres" endorsement plus "Aviso" also in manuscript, which indicates the maritime carriage with involvement of a chartered vessel, these being faster than the usual ships which crossed the Atlantic with correspondence. "Cadiz." straight-line on dispatch and "España" postmark applied in transit at Corunna. Manuscript docket inside: "...de el correo del Cuzco y Espa. que llegaron en el extraordinario de 1° de marzo" denoting the conveyance on arrival by an "extraordinario" mail. One of the highly interesting, very few covers recorded with the "Aviso" attestation for this extraordinary and special service. Very fresh and fine.
ChileIncoming Mail1795 circa. Front of large wrapper sent as official correspondence with "Por el Rey" heading with contents originating from Madrid, re-addressed with "Virrey" (viceroy) endorsement from Lima to Concepción, to be forwarded to the Commander of the Veteran Troops and the Militia in the Province of Chiloé, initially rated "44" (11 ounces), this being crossed out and re-rated at "72¾" reales, bearing "Lima" straight-line and "Concepcion/De Chile" two-line handstamps, both applied in red. Carried by the "Ceres" frigate from Callao to Concepción. A very rare and early re-addressed incoming mail.
PeruInternal Mail1800 circa. Two covers (side flaps missing) from Tarma and Palpa, both sent to Yca, rated "2½" reales as per an unpaid letter to be paid on receipt, both struck on dispatch with corresponding straight-line handstamp, backstamped with "Perù" straight line on arrival. It was thought that this "Perù" type was exclusively used in Lima; nevertheless, this similar type was also used in Yca on incoming mail. Ex Camino.
PeruIncoming Mail1647, Jan. 30. Folded cover from Rome to Lima, sent by the "Casa General de la Compañía de Jesús" (Headquarters of the Society of Jesus) to the Deputy Province Chief of the Jesuitic Society. Docketed on front at left in manuscript, including the date of the letter and a summary of the contents: "Select a procurator for Rome whose task is to ensure no changes in the old procedures for this province, which have been those in the full congregation". Reverse showing red "Proposit Generalis Societariesvs" wax seal. Mail from Rome to America (ecclesiastical mail) had to be carried in Spanish ships departing from Seville or Cádiz, being previously transported overland. The regular maritime route was Rome-Madrid-Seville-Cartagena de Indias, continuing its journey overland to destination via Santa Fe (Bogotá) and Quito. The earliest cover recorded addressed to America and originating from a country not possessing colonies in this continent. One of the greatest gems of the early stampless mails of the World.
PeruOutgoing Mail1839, July 31. Entire letter from Lima to Seville (Spain), graced by magnificent strike of "Perú" straight-line handstamp in red, and "8R" due marking in same colour, both applied at Cádiz. Vertical fold, small tear in centre and barely visible rust spotting. One of only three covers known after 1821, during the period of independence of most of the American colonies, bearing this "Perú" postmark.
PeruIncoming Mail1782, July. Cover from Spain to Lima, bearing "España" postmark (Kouri type VIII) applied in Cádiz. The manuscript endorsement at bottom left indicates the "El Famoso Sevillano" the packet boat carrying this mail, also annotated "Por Cartagena de Indias", where it started its overland journey on American soil via Quito. Docket of receipt inside on July 26. The tariff paid would have been three reales for the maritime fee and 2 reales for the inland rate. Remarkably fresh and fine for this early period. Ex Camino.
PeruIncoming Mail1780 circa. Undated folded cover from Málaga (Spain) to Lima, forwarded via Corunna and not through the closer port of Cádiz, bearing "Andalucia/Baga" two-line handstamp on dispatch, struck in transit at Corunna with "España" in red (Kouri type I), following its maritime journey to Buenos Aires as indicated at lower left, being rare with this endorsement. Ex Camino.
ChileIncoming Mail1810 circa. Cover front from Madrid to the Governor of Chiloé (Chile), with manuscript "Por el Rey" heading and bearing the matching coat-of-arms within oval marking applied on this official correspondence, struck in transit at Cadiz with corresponding straight-line and, at Lima, framed "MZ" handstamp to denote that the letter had been registered in a special "Real Renta de Correos" account to be paid by official administrations, rated in manuscript at 64½ reales including the 21½ inland and 43 maritime fees. A rare, very fine and fresh "royal" correspondence featuring a high postage. Also an undated cover from Cádiz to Santiago, with "Cadiz." straight-line, carried by the "Avia" warship, arriving at Lima and then struck by boxed "MZ". A fresh and rare duo.
PeruIncoming Mail1778 circa. Large folded cover from Madrid addressed to Antonio Hermenegildo de Querejazu, member of the Royal Audience of Lima, most infrequently rated at 67 reales (in manuscript), according to a 6 2/3 ounces weight, endorsed "Coruña", where the "España" straight-line in red was applied. The route of carriage was Corunna-Havana-Cartagena de Indias-Santa Fe-Quito-Lima. The highest franking recorded on mail to the Americas bearing any of the "España" postmarks. Ex Camino.
PeruOutgoing Mail1810 circa. Cover front via Guayaquil to Guatemala, bearing a marvelous and complete strike of "Dirn.Genl.de/Rents.Estan/cadas del/Peru." laurelled "crown" marking in black, handstamped at Lima with red "Perù" straight line (Sitjà type II), rated at "12" reales and endorsed "Por Guayaquil en la Fragta. Warren". The American "Warren" frigate was captured by the Spanish Navy when this ship was smuggling commercial goods into Quiriquina Island in the Bay of Concepción (Chile) on 25.9.1807, being under Spanish flag until 1813, when it took part in the blockade of Valparaiso. An extremely rare Spanish Colonial mail carried by an American captured ship, this being an absolutely extraordinary characteristic. Certs. Comex and Moorhouse.
MexicoOutgoing Mail1821, May 21. Entire letter from Monterrey via León of Guanajuato to Lima, endorsed "Por San Blas Payta Perú", struck with fancy "Monterey" handstamp in red, framed "Leon" postmark which is not reported in blue. Rate "4" marking amended with additional "½" in manuscript. Slight edge imperfections to cover at top. Another letter from the Americas, with this combination of postmarks, has not been reported; in addition, only four colonial letters are known from Mexico to Peru.
CubaOutgoing Mail1782 circa. Folded cover from Havana to Lima, leaving Cuba after the application of red "Yndias" straight-line handstamp, charged on destination with "5" reales as per double rate. It was carried following the Cartagena-Santa Fé-Quito route. Despite some imperfections, a rare early mail from Cuba to Peru. Ex Kouri.
MexicoOutgoing Mail1809, Oct. 15. Entire letter from Mexico to Lima (Peru), with "4" rate marking, altered for the addition of ½ real in manuscript paying the single maritime and inland fees, handstamped by "Mexico" straight line on departure, endorsed "Primea. vía". One of only four covers so far recorded from Mexico to Peru in the colonial period. Ex Rosenthal.
PeruTransit Mail1807, June 2. Entire letter datelined in Cádiz (Spain) to Buenos Aires, presumably conveyed by a merchant vessel, not calling at Buenos Aires, to Lima, infreqeuntly carried in the Pacific Ocean for this destination, bearing straight-line handstamp in red of Lima, where it entered the mails, then continuing its route overland via Potosí. A very interesting and rare letter following an intricate maritime route.
PeruOutgoing Mail1766, Jan. 11. Cover to Cádiz (Spain), endorsed "Por Panama" at lower left, bearing a very fine strike of the extraordinary "Perù" straight-line handstamp, being applied at Lima, and charged in manuscript at single rate with "4" (reales). The regular route followed would have been Lima-Panama-Cartagena-Havana-Cádiz, but it is believed that this letter made the journey Lima-Santa Fe-Valencia (Venezuela)-Caracas-Cádiz in a commercial ship of a Caracas company. The letter is docketed on reverse in transit at Valencia (Venezuela) with "Valencia Rto de la Rocca" on January 11, 1866. Between April 1765 and January 1767, the "PERÙ" type showed in this item was into service, thus becoming the first postmark introduced in South America, as well as the first marking known used in transatlantic mail; other examples of transatlantic correspondence from Peru, dated in 1768 and preserved in the "Archivo de Indias", do not show this handstamp, but the marking "Perú" in manuscript. Of extraordinary significance as the earliest transatlantic mail exhibiting a postmark applied in the Americas, with its rarity being further enhanced by representing one of only three items recorded exhibiting this highly significant handstamp, (of which two are included in this collection; see also the following lot). One of the greatest gems of the pre-adhesive worldwide postal history.
PanamaTransit Mail1810 circa. Large cover front from Lima to Madrid, with "Perù" straight-line handstamp (Sitjà type II) on dispatch, endorsed "Por la Preciosa" corresponding to the ship which carried this mail, and "Panama", denoting an extraordinary route with the purpose of avoiding entering part of the Nueva Granada territory during the War of Independence of Colombia. "4 Ø 4" manuscript weight paid by the handstamped "115R" rate, which represents one of the highest potal fees recorded on surviving colonial mail from Peru. A very rare mail following, as a result of war events, an extraordinary route via Panama, then via Portobello and Havana to Cádiz.
El SalvadorOutgoing Mail1801, May 26. Folded cover from Sonsonate to Lima (Peru), endorsed "Por Guatemala, México, Acapulco y Guayaquil", bearing bold "Son/Sonate" fancy cancel, struck in transit with Italic "Guatemala" postmark, rated at "4½" reales for the single weight. The only cover known from either El Salvador or Guatemala following this route; in addition, mail from these territories to Peru is very scarce.
