MOUNTED 18thC COINS. (12) Silver coins including Halfcrowns of James 11 1686, William 111 1697 and two of George 11 Lima below bust, dated 1745. Various GB shillings and sixpences also foreign coinage of that period. Part of what was once a belt, soldered with ring mounts, some to the sides others on the faces.
Caterina de Julianis Madonna col Bambino Firmato e datato 1727 Bassorilievo in cere colorate Dimensioni: cm 11,2 x 8,3 con la cornice impiallacciata di tartaruga cm 19 x 16,4, Il rilievo raffigura la Vergine, con veste rossa e manto scuro, che circonda con le braccia il Bambino Gesù dormiente sotto una coltre verde a fiori dorati. Di Caterina de Julianis (che firma sul retro, a tutte lettere, l’opera esaminata datandola nel 1727) comincia ad essere nota la felice attività come scultrice in cere colorate a Napoli che le valse, ancora vivente, nel 1742, una “Vita” del biografo degli artisti della sua patria, Bernardo De’ Dominici1. Ignoriamo la data della sua nascita ma sappiamo che nel 1695 aveva firmato una Madonna col Bambino oggi non più reperibile, pubblicata nel catalogo dell’Esposizione Nazionale di Belle Arti in Napoli nel 1877. Nel 1703, la de Julianis appose la propria firma su La morte di San Francesco Saverio 2, facente parte di una serie: in quella scenetta compaiono fiori di seta accanto a foglie e rametti naturali che costituirono, come scrive De’ Dominici, una specialità della scultrice. La morte del santo si svolge nell’angolo di un boschetto con, in lontananza, la veduta di un porto che potrebbe essere stata dipinta dall’autrice stessa la quale, a quanto scrive il suo biografo, fu anche apprezzata come pittrice. Forse il gruppo più im- portante delle opere della de Julianis si trova nella Chiesa dell’Immacolata di Catanzaro: quattro bassorilievi con l’Adorazione dei Magi, l’Adorazione dei Pastori, la Deposizione di Cristo e Il Tempo e la Morte, documentati in possesso di Don Emanuele Spinelli d’Acquara,Vescovo di Catanzaro fra il 1713 e la sua morte nel 1727 3. Ci sono notizie di altri lavori della de Julianis creduti per lunghi anni non più esistenti: ci riferiamo ad alcuni quadretti conservati fino al 1944 nella chiesa di San Severo al Pendino a Napoli che subì un gravissimo bombardamento in quell’anno. Si era sempre pensato che le ceroplastiche della de Julianis in quella chiesa fossero andate distrutte finché lo studioso François Cagnetta 4 non dimostrò che una composizione, acquistata dal Victoria and Albert Museum di Londra (presso gli eredi dell’architetto Armando Brasini), attribuita a Gaetano Zummo, era in realtà opera della de Julianis e proveniva dalla Chiesa di San Severo. Cagnetta asseriva questo sia per alcuni documenti in suo possesso –mai resi noti a quanto so- sia, più semplicemente, per quanto scrive De’Dominici sulla nostra artista:“pare impossibile uguagliare i suoi cimiterii, rappresentanti cadaveri ed ossa spolpate de’quali se ne vede uno nella sagrestia di San Severo de’ padri predicatori, nel quale ha rappresentato sì viva l’immagine di que’ cadaveri che marciscono”.A quanto pare non tutte le opere della de Julianis vennero distrutte: a San Severo si conservavano anche una mezza figura di Ecce Homo, una Santa Rosa da Lima col Bambino Gesù che le presenta un giglio, un San Domenico che viene alzato verso il cielo da una fiamma, una “Madonna intera col suo Bambino in braccio” e, ciò che ora ci interessa particolarmente “una mezza figura di Madonna similmente col Bambino in braccio in atto di dormire ch’è bellissimo, figurato in più tenera età dell’anzidetto”. Non possiamo essere del tutto certi che la composizione qui studiata sia quella citata dal De Dominici quando essa si trovava a San Severo al Pendino ma nulla vieta di avanzare l’ ipotesi: la Madonna qui si presenta a mezza figura, il Bambino dorme fra le sue braccia, è bellissimo ed in tenera età; l’opera è datata, come si è detto, nel 1727, e a mio modo di vedere la sua qualità segna l’apice della nostra ceroplasta. 1 B.
