Six 18th century style manganese-decorated delftware tiles, each painted with figures in military uniform, 13cm x 13cm

An English delftware blue and white bowl, probably Bristol, c.1750, the interior with inscription One Bowl / more and / Then., within concentric ring borders, the exterior with a continuous landscape with a young lady and an architectural ruin, with birds in flight beyond, 26.5cm diameter, 11cm highFootnotes: Note: a smaller example with the same inscription within concentric rings to the interior is in the Bristol City Art Gallery Collection, no. G.2013, illustrated in Frank Britton, English Delftware in the Bristol Collection (1982), p. 286, no. 18.30. Condition Report: There is some evidence of overpainting and clear lacquer suggesting that this bowl has probably been broken through and repaired.  The restoration is discreet and well carried out, making it difficult to discern the exact nature of the damage concealed.  There is some slight peeling of the overpainting to the left and right of the lady, and in places there is some very slight yellowing as the restoration ages.  In time the bowl will benefit from being restored again.  In addition, there is some flaking to the glaze on the rim.

An English delftware blue and white oviform pharmacy jar, probably London, c.1720-30, blue cross mark, with a short foot and rim, the front painted with a label inscribed U: CÆRUL . FORT in a strapwork escutcheon with winged putti holding flowers and centred by a shell, the lower part with pendant flowers and husks and centred by a winged cherubim mask, 18cm highFootnotes: Note: The original contents of this drug-jar were Caeruleum, unguentum, known as ‘The Blue Ointment’, which was an unguent used as an anti-venereal disease agent which was made from hog’s lard, turpentine and mercury. Condition Report: Overall this drug-jar is in reasonable condition – the principal issue is the flaking and chipping to the upper rim and footrim.  The cracks to the glaze throughout, some of which are dirt-filled, is more minor.  There has been an attempt to disguise the flaking / chipping to the upper rim with some slight filling / overpainting – this is very crudely done.  Ideally a restorer should remove this crude repair and either carry out a proper filling (which should be reasonably low cost) or it could be left without any repair.  

Two English delftware blue and white chinoiserie dishes, mid-18th century, the larger painted with a stylised river landscape with a heron perched on a fence by bamboo on a terrace, a willow tree issuing from rockwork nearby before distant ships, 37cm diameter; the smaller with a chinoiserie figure seated on a rock under a tree and pointing towards a bird perched on a plant, 29.7cm diameter (2)Provenance: With Lucy Johnson Antiques, London (the larger plate, paper label attached to the reverse).Condition Report: Larger plate: There is some flaking to the glaze of the rim – the largest area is to the edge of the rim at 9.30 o’clock, and just below it there is another area of flaking which has been over-painted to disguise it.  In addition there is a slender area to the edge of the well (at 8 o’clock) which has been overpainted to disguise flaking – this is not very noticeable.  On the underside there is some chipping to the footrim. Smaller: There is a crack from the rim at 4 o’clock which branches at the well (with an associated minute loss at the well).  In addition there is some flaking and very small chipping to the rim.

The Eden tile with loss to the bottom left which has been re-glued. The moth tile with chips, scratches and crazing commensurate with age and use. The further tile is similarly damaged with a notable scratch in the glaze running from the left-hand side.

The larger famille rose bowl with signs of notable repair to the edge and rubbing to the decoration. The lobed single dish with a notable repair and some chips to the rim. The two similar plates with lobed rims, one with a notable repair, the other with some chipping to the rim. The dish with vase decoration to the centre with light chipping to the rim. The second largest dish in generally good condition with some biscuit chipping to the rim. The largest dish in generally good condition. The Delft sectioned dish with some biscuit chipping to the rim commensurate with age and use. The various blue and white with craquelure throughout and some chips to the rims. The pierced comport with signs of repair to the extremities. The shaped coffee can with chips to the rim and losses to the handle. The larger blue and white coffee can in generally good condition. The smaller coffee can in generally good condition. The glass decanters with losses particularly to the stoppers. The Meissen cherub with a loss to the back and losses to the bocage on the fingers.The Lowestoft bowl with a notable crack. Losses to the Delftware and other minor losses throughout the ceramics. The Worcester teapot with a slight loss to the spout, minor chipping to the foot, slight scratching to the glaze and other surface dirt throughout.

Three 15th century pieces from the Saga Visal Hoi-an hoard Vietnamese shipwreck and a delft dish, 26cm. Condition - commensurate with age Large Hoi An bowl crazed and discoloured cream in areas as shown; shallow grazes to unglazed rim but not chipped or cracked; chip to inside edge of footrim, approx. 12x6mm; further minor knocks to footrim; 23cm diam.; height 5.3cm.  Other two Hoi An bowls good.  18th century delftware plate not chipped or cracked but numerous acceptable nicks around yellow rim.  No repairs in this lot.

A large London delftware apothecary or drug jar, mid 18th century, originally decorated in blue with a cartouche inscribed 'Ther: Andro', later enamelled in the 19th century with a famille rose design of insects, crabs and scattered flowers between pink and green borders, with a later wooden cover, some chipping, cracked, 39.5cm overall. (2) Together with a letter from the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries, dated 4th April 1962, and another from the Wellcome Historical Medical Museum, dated 23rd May 1962.Provenance: the Joy Hallam Collection.
