Further Details: one fork missing, one knife handle broken and re-glued, another knife with cracks to handle, and one fork handle badly split cracked, another fork handle cracked. Otherwise slight wear and small amounts of staining to gilding/porcelain parts commensurate to usage. Case worn and stained.
An Early 19th Century Naval Officer's Dirk, the 24cm tapering triangular section steel blade engraved, etched and gilt with scrolling foliage and crossed standards, the pierced circular gilt brass guard chased with a fouled anchor and a band of leafy tendrils, the hilt made from a 17th/18th century marine ivory cutlery handle, possibly Dutch, finely carved with three female allegorical figures in medieval dress, depicting Hope holding an anchor and a bird, Justice holding a set of scales and a sword and Charity with three children, the pommel carved as four male heads wearing periwigs, the gilt brass scabbard engraved with three further allegorical figures and bands of quilling and foliage, signed Dudley, Grand Parade, Portsmouth, 38cmBlade with black patching, wear to the gilt and a slight bend to the tip. The marine ivory hilt made from an earlier cutlery handle. Fine age cracks to the ivory. Wear to the gilding on the scabbard.

Unrestored, having been collected from a local house clearance and quite marked from use. No keys, but locks are in place. Opens ok and drawers run, but linings are old. Missing all the ivory handled knives, so set is incomplete. Inscribed C V HILL to the top plaque.
