John May’s DFC was announced in the London Gazette dated 30th March 1943 serving with 142 Sqn flying Wellington bombers. With original newspaper cutting about award of DFC: “The citation reads that he has consistently displayed fine navigational skill and eagerness to take part in operations against the enemy. These qualities have contributed to the success of his crew in obtaining photographs of the target area. At all times on the ground and in the air his fine example, skill and devotion to duty have been an inspiration to all other navigators of the squadron. P/O May was commissioned in 1942 and has taken part in many raids on Germany and the occupied territories. He is now on operations in North Africa.” With some copied research, he was commissioned on 23 Oct 1942 from rank of Sgt No 1101598. A pair of miniature silhouettes, both signed by the artist and painted on the glass of a lady and gentleman in 18th century dress in black on an enamel tile and framed in a glazed black frame. With a collectors label identifying them as being the work of T. Rider. Each portrait measures approximately 9cm by 6.5cm, the frames approximately 15cm by 13cm. The label, to the verso of the gentleman, reads:  “LIKENESSE Taken in Miniature, profile and finished in a rich and elegant Stile on enamel, also on Glafs with a Gold Ground, in a Manner entirely new. Coats of Arms, Crefts, Cyphers, Writing, or any Device, wrought in gold on glafs. “*indecipherable*… having Likenefles in Shade of their deceafed Friends, *indecipherable*have them reduced *indecipherable* copied and emblematically reprefented in a curious manner. Large shades reduced within the Compass to be worn in a  *indecipherable*, Pin, locket or Bracelet, on Enamel, Ivory or Paper, and the Likeness carefully *indescipherable*,and dreffed in the prefent tafte by  T. RIDER, Profilest No, 8, Charles Stret, Coren Garden. “NB He preferves the original Shades, and can fúpply thofe *indecipherable* has once taken with any number of profiles, and have them carefully conveyed either by letter or packet to any part of England or elfewhere.”- Condition report: In overall good condition, although there is limited crazing to the edge of the left hand side of the gentleman's portrait. Some abrasions to each frame.

Ihon (John) Coggs of Fleet Street, London,- George II brass circumferentor (theodolite) c1730, housing a cylindrical glazed compass with a steel indicating hand and engraved (formerly silvered) eight point compass rose to the centre, outer track divided into two-degree intervals and a subsidiary Arabic numeral chapter ring divided into ten minute intervals, mounted on a 12" cast brass four spoke circular table engraved on the circumference in one degree increments from 0-360 degrees, with makers name and mounting points for vertical sights. John Coggs is recorded as a mathematical instrument maker and engraver, working in Fleet Street from 1710-40The introduction of advanced surveying instruments such as this circumferentor revolutionized the field of land surveying. Surveyors could now conduct their work with a level of precision that was previously unattainable, leading to more accurate maps and a better understanding of geographical features.

A late-Regency pocket sundial by Samuel Porter - the turned sycamore case with push-fit lid, the underside with pink paper maker's label, 'Porter's Magnetic Sun Dial on the Floating Compass Card', the printed ivory-coloured dial with brass gnomon, signed 'S. Porter Fecit Feby 16 1824 Entered at Stationer's Hall', under a convex glass, 5.5cm diameter.* In good, very original condition overall. There is some patchy wear to the polish to the exterior across the surface, and a few scratches to the wood to one edge of the base. A few small losses to the top edge of the lid label. The dial is in good condition and rotates correctly. The glass dome is dusty/cloudy to the underside.

A WW2 German plated brass and alloy cigarette box lid - 7.5 x 5.1cm; together with a Short & Mason plated metal pocket compass; three British military badges; and an Italian copper artillery regiment pendant. * The German cigarette box lid was reputedly found by the vendor's grandfather when he returned home after the liberation of Poland in 1945. His house was situated in the vicinity of the Treblinka Extermination Camp, which had been shut down and dismantled in late-1943.

There is also a loss to the keywork semi-circle to the other side of the lid.- White metal scroll holder: In good condition, with just a few small spots of corrosion to the metal in a few places.- Miniature gong: The tips of the five-pointed roof are bent, with one heavily creased.- All of the other pieces are in good condition.

* ERIC RITCHIE (SCOTTISH b .1934), IN THE CITY, EVENING gouache on board, signed and titled versoframed and under glassimage size 49cm x 79cm, overall size 62cm x 92cm Note: Painter, mural artist, stage designer, illustrator and teacher, born in Aberdeen. He studied at Edinburgh College of Art, winning the Andrew Grant Major Travelling Scholarship to Italy in 1956–7. Ritchie early on established a name as a mural painter, among his commissions being the Diaghilev Exhibition at Edinburgh Festival in 1955; the Military Tattoo in 1959 and 1970; and then in 1985 the Epstein Exhibition. During the late 1950s and early 1960s Ritchie taught at Edinburgh College of Art as well as Dewsbury and Batley Technical Art College. Then after seven years teaching secondary school, in 1973 he gave this up to teach art privately. Meanwhile, Ritchie had designed a range of stage sets, from Nabucco to HMS Pinafore. He also did book illustration as well as work for magazines such as Scottish Field. His solo shows included The Scottish Gallery, Edinburgh, 1978 and 1981, and he was included in The Compass Contribution at Tramway, Glasgow, 1990.

He studied at Glasgow School of Art and in Italy, which remained an inspiration to his work, and went on to teach for some years. Rossi appeared in many mixed shows: at Compass Gallery, Glasgow; Glasgow Group; Fine Art Society in Glasgow; and RSW and Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, of both of which he was a member. He had many one-man shows, including Compass Gallery, Strathclyde University and more recently at Open Eye Gallery, in Edinburgh. Rossi was a painter, often in mixed media, whose works – especially the still lifes – were coolly ordered and elegant.

While there he won the John Kinross Scholarship, from the Royal Scottish Academy, which allowed him to study in Florence and the Richard Ford Award, from the Royal Academy in London, to study the works in the Prado, Madrid. As a student, he travelled by bicycle to see collections in places such as Amsterdam, Arnhem, Paris and London. His Degree show caused a sensation, featuring oil paintings of figures on racing bikes painted in "action mode" in a technique approaching performance. He followed with images of gilded youth in fast cars and then overscale still lives and transpositions of parts of Velasquez Las Meninas before moving to Orkney and tackling the dramatic seas and coastline with the same originality and attack. He has exhibited with the likes of Bellany, Lupertz and Baselitz. McLaren has also won numerous other prizes and important awards including the 1988 British Airways Most Promising Artist Award Travelling Scholarship (£10,000). He is a regular contributor to The Royal Scottish Academy, The Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts and The Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour. He has had solo exhibitions in Glasgow, Edinburgh (including The Scottish Gallery), London (including Portland Gallery and Thompson's Gallery), Belgium and Chicago and has taken part in many group exhibitions.

His latest body of work focuses on what Thomson calls "contemporary observations" and pays an homage to a series of his most admired artists. He has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions throughout the UK, Europe and the USA. Thomson was elected as a member of the Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts (RGI) in 2015 and the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour (RSW) in 2016. His work can be found in many national collections such as the Gallery of Modern Art Glasgow, Scottish Arts Council and the Fleming Collection, London.

After a period working at Compass Gallery, Glasgow, 1987–9, she left to paint full-time, in 1990 being visiting artist on the Castle Toward, Strathclyde Education, art course. Further awards included Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts David Cargill Award in 1990; and in 1991 the Scottish Artist Prize at Royal Over-Seas League Open and the Scottish Amicable Award at the Royal Glasgow Institute. Banks took part in many group shows from 1984, where she appeared in New Generation Artists at Compass; also Paisley Drawing Competition, Paisley Museum, from 1989; Jobson’s Choice, Jill George Gallery, 1992; and Royal Over-Seas League Open, 1995. Was in 1999 artist-in-residence, with a solo show, at Edinburgh Zoo; solo exhibition at Cyril Gerber Fine Art, Glasgow, 2001. Banks’ work blended realistic and Surrealist elements. Aberdeen Art Gallery, Lillie Art Gallery in Milngavie, BBC Scotland and Motherwell District Libraries hold examples.
