A 'cello, 19th c, length of back 74cm, two later mahogany bows and a set of replacement strings, cased Provenance: The present private owner, a local musician, has stated (private correspondence) that the cello was bought by their father in about 1956, from a "man who lived above the Post Office on Porchester Road, Nottingham". At the time it was suggested that it was made c1790, possibly by William Hill. The vendor continues "When I started playing it there was one unusual feature, the neck was long. This meant that fourth position was about a inch further up the finger board than normal. I got used to playing with this, but after a few years I went on a music course and had a lesson with a professional cellist. He advised that the neck should be altered so that the positions were in the correct place. Fortunately, my father knew Wilfred Saunders [the Nottingham luthier] He agreed to alter the neck and took a diagonal sliver out, which made the neck perfect length. I have played the 'cello regularly ever since in several local orchestras and it has performed well. It has a lovely tone."
