Two Hochst figures of musicians, circa 1780, modelled by J.P. Melchior, he standing cross-armed carrying a cello on his back, she carrying a bundle in her right hand and a horn over her left shoulder, each raised on a grassy mound base, wheel mark in underglaze-blue, incised R to female, 18cm. and 17.5cm. high, (2).
A Cello, 19th century, with purfling front and verso, with two piece back, the body 74 cm (excluding button), 121 cm overall, with soft bag carry case. CONDITION REPORT: The Cello appears structurally sound. The scroll and pegs are all in good condition, as is the finger board. The rear of the neck has approximately 15 old woodworm holes. There appears to have been a repair where the neck joins the ribs and top of the back. There is filler covering a circular section indicating some form of pegged repair. Where the button joins the top of the back there are cracks and possible evidence of glue. The back itself has a few old long-gone woodworm holes. The join of the two-piece back is visible but not separated. There is one small 7 cm hairline crack at the foot of the back. The edge of the back has various small nibbles. The left-hand side front facing ribs are all quite marked but not split. The top right-hand rib has a split (which is not open) running from the neck all the way around the side to the sharp edge. The centre rib appears to be in reasonably good order with three minor woodworm holes. The lower section of the side is quite badly scratched and marked and has lost much of the polish. The front of the Cello is nibbled all the way around the edge and there are some losses which should be visible on our images. There appears to be a crack underneath the finger board and there are numerous scuffs and marks around the bridge. There is a crack running from the left lower sound hole running for approximately 4 cm. There is a similar crack on the right-hand side. There are numerous old woodworm holes at the lower side of the front panel and a lot of scuffs, marks and small losses beneath the ebony string retainer. There are also other further minor cracks to the front.
