RATHBONE BASIL: (1892-1967) British Actor, famous for his portrayal of Sherlock Holmes in a number of films. A.L.S., Basil Rathbone, two pages, 8vo, Central Park West, New York, 13th October 1962, to Miss Anne Blair. Rathbone states that he will be leaving New York next Thursday for Kansas City `on a long tour of my one man show.` and continues `My appearance in Washington on Nov. 29 & 30 with Mr. Beck and his period music programme at the Library of Congress should not be confused with my later appearance on Apl. 4th next year with my own one man show at Howard University.` The actor further seeks his correspondent`s advice as to a good hotel in Washington, `I hate the big noisy ones! & I like to be comfortable!. The Carlton used to be good. Then someone told me about a charming new hotel in Georgetown-sort of "period" with some atmosphere & probably horribly expensive!`. Accompanied by the original envelope hand addressed by Rathbone. EX
[CRIPPEN DR. H. H.]: (1862-1910) American-born Physician, famously murdered his wife in 1910. Bernard Spilsbury (1877-1947) English Pathologist, involved in the case of Dr. Crippen. Brief A.L.S., Bernard H. Spilsbury, one page, 8vo, Pall Mall, London, 21st February 1946, to a gentleman, on the printed stationery of the Junior Carlton Club. Spilsbury forwards his autograph for his correspondent`s collection. Accompanied by a fountain pen ink signature of Spilsbury on an 8vo sheet of printed stationery from the Junior Carlton Club, dated 21st February 1946 in his hand; Henry George Kendall (1874-1965) British Sea Captain of the Canadian Pacific Line`s SS Montrose, famous for his role in the capture of Dr. Crippen. Bold black fountain pen ink signature `Henry G Kendall, Commander R N R`) on a good slip of paper, with the additional words `Late R.M.S. Empress of Ireland & Dr. Crippen Fame` in his hand beneath his signature. VG, 3

An interesting group [PLATE II Francis Allston Channing, 1st Baron Channing (1841-1926), barrister and academic, Liberal MP for East Northamptonshire 1885-1910; Richard Cadbury (1835-99), chocolate manufacturer and philanthropist who, with his brother George, took over the ailing family business in 1861 and developed a new site at Bournville, opened in 1879; The Hon Philip Stanhope, 1st Baron Weardale (1847-1923), Liberal MP for Wednesbury 1886-92 and for Burnley 1893-1903; John Burns (1858-1943), political agitator who led demonstrations in London against unemployment and was heavily involved in the five-week London dock strike of 1889, elected to represent Battersea on the newly created LCC, Labour MP for Battersea 1892, offered the presidency of the Local Government Board by Campbell-Bannerman in 1906 and became president of the Board of Trade in 1914. Davis fulfilled the speaking engagement to the Archaeological section of the Birmingham and Midland Institute on 26 February 1896.
