VICTORIAN LETTERS AND PHOTOGRAPHS COLLECTIONCollection - (COL)A fascinating archive of approx. sixty ALSs, notes, cards and photographs, approx. c.1880-1910. A mixed collection of correspondence, many on headed notepaper from prestigious London addresses (Princes Gate, Bedford Square, Cadogan Gardens, Portland Place, Carlton House Terrace etc.) Correspondents include the artists Luke Fildes, Mortimer Menpes and Frederic Leighton, the authors Pearl Criagie and Ethel McKenna, various politicians, diplomats, theatrical and military figures etc. Viewing in person highly recommended.
Book, "Spaniels-Their Breaking for Sport and Field Trials" by H.W. Carlton with introduction by W. Arkwright with publishers note to interior "The publication of this book which was in the the press at the time was deferred on the outbreak of War. Owing to the ever increasing demand on spaniel breaking however it has been deemed advisable to publish it without further delay, March 1915".
A Pilkington's Royal Lancastrian lapis ware vase by Edward Thomas Radford, no.211, impressed marks to base, height 12cm, also a 1930's Carlton Ware ribbed vase of baluster form in pale green glaze, no.3979, blue printed mark to base, height 19cm (2). CONDITION REPORT: Minor crazing, no further damage noted.
A Carlton Ware lustre ginger jar and cover decorated with a kingfisher beside lily pads on a red ground, printed marks, height 22.5cm, also a Copeland Spode blue ground gilt decorated rectangular trinket box (2). CONDITION REPORT: Minor surface wear to the jar and light rubbing to the gilding otherwise appears good with no further obvious signs of faults, damage or restoration.
A pair of Wiltshaw and Robinson Carlton Ware vases, pattern 2519, height 16cm, a Gustavsberg Argenta green ground footed bowl with silver overlay, diameter 10cm, a Continental porcelain two part dish with floral encrustation, a ginger jar with cover, two mortars, a pestle and a Loetz style green glass vase (af) (7). CONDITION REPORT: Vases are quite dirty especially around the rim and one has a hairline crack visible to the rim area, also some rubbing to gilding. Continental porcelain dish has several losses to the floral encrustation. The small green vase has small rim chips.
A quantity of decorative ceramics including a Royal Winton transfer decorated bowl, Carlton Ware preserve pot and cover, Carlton Ware chinoiserie decorated vase, black basalt vase etc (8). CONDITION REPORT: The vase has a restored chip to rim. Preserve pot spoon broken in two and glued, heavy wear. Royal Winton bowl surface scratches, surface scratches throughout.
A Carlton Ware Sunderland lustre style Guinness plate, printed in black to the centre with the verse `O Lovely Guinness!.` within a splashed pink frame and scroll moulded rim, black printed factory mark to base, together with four `My Goodness. My Guinness!` blue printed `Willow` pattern plates.
A Carlton Ware oval dish decorated in the New Storks pattern with an enamel and gilt chinoiserie scene of two storks stood beside a trailing tree all to a rouge royale ground, printed marks, length 26cm together with a Myott & Son square cake plate with handpainted autumnal leaf border edge, printed mark 22cm sq (2)
