Catherine Gladstone (1812-1900), wife of Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone. Autograph letter on headed paper (11 Carlton House Terrace), headed Downing Street by hand, dated May 22nd [no year stated]. Black ink on single folded sheet (four sides of writing), signed on final page. Addressed to Mrs Wardrop, thanking her and her husband for their gift and well wishes, 'although your most kind words & handsome present have been received some time do not think it has been the less thought of! The turmoil we have lived in will plead my excuses, & now let me tell you how much touched both my husband & myself have been in receiving such a tribute of affection.' Original ink splash on final page, some general discolouration, fold-lines. Together with a folded sheet of headed paper (Dalmeny Park, Edinburgh), inscribed in black ink, 'From Mrs Gladstone, April 6 1880'
An Art Deco sapphire and diamond bracelet by Charles Holl, centred with an oval cabochon sapphire, the bracelet set overall with rows of graduated old circular-cut diamonds in platinum, French import marks, maker's mark CH, diamonds approximately 17.00cts total, 18cm long Accompanied by report number 80274-53 dated 4 September 2020 from GCS, stating that the cabochon-cut sapphire weighs approximately 32.00cts and is a natural sapphire, with no indications of heat treatment. Origin: Sri Lanka (Ceylon). Provenance: The bracelet was purchased by Lord Bernard Fitzalan Howard (1885 - 1972), 3rd Baron Howard of Glossop, for his wife Mona Josephine Tempest Fitzalan Howard, née Stapleton (1894 - 1971), 11th Baroness Beaumont of Carlton Towers, Yorkshire. Thence by descent to the current owner.

One of the toucans has been restored, with the two Guinness glasses reglued. Another has a mark on the back but it looks like it could be cleaned off.

A Pair Of 28-Bore Flintlock Duelling PistolsBy Robert Wogdon Of London, Circa 1785-90With browned twist octagonal sighted barrels (early 19th century working replacements) each engraved 'William Morris Perth' along the top flat, silver fore-sights, platinum-lined touch-holes, breech tang with transverse band of engraved beadwork in front of the back-sight and flowering foliage behind, border engraved flat bevelled detented locks (two side nails replaced) each signed on a gold oval centred on engraved drapery, the stepped tails, safety-catches, cocks and steels all with engraved foliate decoration, the last with small roller working on the blued steel-spring, and gold-lined pans, figured half-stocks (one with minor old repair along the upper edge on one side) each with swelling flat-sided butt and dark horn fore-end cap (one incomplete), border engraved blued steel mounts comprising butt-caps each decorated with foliage and a flower-head centred on the retaining screw, trigger-guards each with acorn finial and decorated with a garland along the bow, and turned rear ramrod-pipes, set triggers, horn-tipped wooden ramrods, one with iron powder-measure, and some original finish (2)28 cm. barrelsFootnotes:The engraved decoration is very similar to that found on the very fine pair of duelling pistols by the same maker and sold in these Rooms, Fine Antique Arms and Armour..., 20 April 2011, lot 456. His family emigrated to Canada in 1801, where his father set up an import/export business. Following his father's death William opened a general store in partnership with his brother, Alexander, and went on to join the militia during the War of 1812. In 1818 he was appointed a justice of the peace in Perth and was elected to the 8th Parliament of Upper Canada for Carlton in 1820. He represented Carlton and subsequently Lanark until 1836, when he was appointed to the Legislative Council. In 1834 he was involved in organising the first canal connecting the Tay River to the Lower Rideau Lake. His efforts on behalf of the Church of Scotland to have it recognised as one of the two National Churches in the British Empire resulted in the creation of the Synod of the Presbyterian Church of Canada. He played a major role in the establishment of Queen's College, later Queen's University, and was its first Chairman of Trustees. In 1841 he was appointed to the Legislative Council of Upper and Lower Canada, and in 1842 was appointed Warden for Johnstown District. In 1844 he was appointed receiver general for the United Canadas and became President of the executive Council in 1846. ESCOFFIER GEORGES AUGUSTE: (1846-1935) Famous French Chef. Arguably the most influential of his time, and considered the creator of Modern Cuisine. Known as “Le Roi des Cuisiniers et Cuisinier des Rois”, (“King of chefs and chef of Kings”). Escoffier popularized and modernized French cooking methods. Rare signed and inscribed book, to the title page, `A mon cher collegue et ami Monsieur Otto Bock, sincere et cordiale sympathie. A. Escoffier.´, being a hardcover copy of Le Livre des Menus, by Escoffier, 4to, 166 pages, published by Ernest Flammarion, Paris 1912. Escoffier adds alongside his inscription an attractive drawing of a flower, additionally signed with his initials to the leaf of the flower. Dated in Copenhagen, 28th September 1923 in Escoffier´s hand beneath his signature. Signatures of Escoffier are rare and desirable in any form. The book is in its original publisher´s binding. Very small overall minor age wear, otherwise VG Escoffier worked in partnership with hotelier Cesar Ritz. They rose to prominence at the Savoy in London serving the elite of society, and later at the Ritz Hotel in Paris and the Carlton in London. Escoffier published Le Guide Culinaire, which is still used as a major reference cooking work. Escoffier's recipes and techniques remain highly influential today, and have been adopted by chefs and restaurants throughout the world.
