A WW1 1915 Star trio and MSM group, awarded to 4928 Company Sergeant Major H.N.Tompkin of the Army Cyclist Corps. To include: the 1915 star (rank as Cpl), BWM (W.O. CL.2), Victory Medal, and the Meritorious Service Medal (C.S.Mjr), plus an Army Cyclist Corps cap badge. Notes: Harold Noel Tompkin first entered the war on August 6th 1915, in the Balkans. His Meritorious Service Medal was gazetted on June 3rd 1919, as part of the so called Peace Gazette. He is noted as hailing from Warrington, and was serving with the 18 battalion Cyclist Company. Condition: generally very good. The medals have toned with age, and there are signs of minor polishing to the high points. They are loosely mounted on a card back, and the ribbons would appear to be replacements. The swivel suspension to the MSM is tight. The cap badge has old polish ingrained to the reverse.
A WW1 medal pair, awarded to Captain W.T.Olver MRCVS of the Royal Army Veterinary Corps. Plus, a nice quality gilt metal and enamel badge of the RAVC (this would seem to have been adapted from a cap badge). Notes: Captain William Tempest Olver (1880-1958) was a native of Tamworth, Staffordshire. He is noted as having been Lieutenant in the AVC Territorial Force in November 1914. He medal index card states that he first entered the war on January 1st 918, in France. He was discharged on September 12th 1918, and is entitled to the Silver War Badge (number 384577). Information supplied by the vendor suggests that Capt Olver was Mayor of Tamworth from 1929-1932, and was a J.P in 1938. Condition: the obverse and reverse of the medals are good, but there has been an attempt to erase the naming to both medals. There is still enough detail left to make out the rank and name. The enamelled badge has some very tiny enamel nibbles, but is nevertheless good.

The MSM has a the usual swivel suspension. The ASC badge has had its slider repaired with solder.

Notes: Frederick Sharp first attested for service in 1902, joining the 12th Lancers. Service with the Lancers appears to have continued until 1917, when he joined the Army Veterinary Corps, and finally the Cheshire Regiment. He used 2 other service numbers, those being 898 and 51451. Through his career he saw service at Home, in India, as part of the British Expeditionary force in 1914 in France. He was discharged as ‘not fit for the war’ on February 18th 1918, with cardiac issues. He died at home in the U.K on August 24th 1918, and is interred at Acton Cemetery. His name does appear on the Commonwealth War Graves website, suggesting the he was classed as casualty of war, despite him being discharged at the time of his death. His medal index card confirms that he did not receive the clasp and roses. Condition: generally good. The 1914 star retains its gilt finish, with just a few fine scratches to the reverse. Notes: Thomas William Kelly was a native of Burton-upon-Trent. He originally landed in France on June 28th 1915. His Military Medal is gazetted on June 17th 1919 as part of schedule number 63. This would likely date the action that earned him the MM to October 1918. At the time of his award he was serving with the 6th Battalion North Staffordshire Regiment. He was later discharged from service in February 1919, under paragraph 392 of army regulations, which meant that he was unfit for further service. His SWB was subsequently awarded in 1920.
