Lot 99

A WW1 officer’s 1914 Star with ‘Mons’ clasp, Prisoner of War medal trio, a portrait of the officer while in captivity, and other associated items. To include: a 1914 Star with original sewn on Mons clasp, British War Medal, each named to Captain Edward Nathaniel Drury-Lowe (1888-1948), of the Notts & Derby Regiment (Sherwood Foresters). Also included is a framed head & shoulders oil portrait of Captain Drury-Lowe, painted in 1917 while a P.O.W. In the Schwarmstedt camp, in Lower Saxony. The portrait is named, dated and has the artists name of ‘G.G.Jackson’ signed at the edge. G.G Jackson was almost certainly a fellow officer prisoner, and only person carries that name who was a prisoner at the time the portrait was made; Captain G.G.Jackson of the Ox & Bucks Light Infantry. Other items included in the lot include a WW1 era compass by Newton & Co of London, 2 1935 silver jubilee medals, a 1937 Edward VIII coronation medal, a Royal Navy bullion blazer badge, a 1904 dated (written in French) to ‘Monsieur Drury Lowe’ from the Royal College of Art, and a 1951 dated Engineers Certificate of Competency, and a framed baptismal certificate for Edward Nathaniel Drury-Lowe, and dated November 22nd 1888 (confirmed 1905). Notes: Capt Drury-Lowe’s medal index card confirms that the 1914 trio and clasp was his full medal entitlement. It would appear that he was also entitled to the Silver War Badge. He first entered the conflict on September 20th 1914, and according to published records by Cox & Co, he was reported as missing on October 20th 1914. He was confirmed as interned on February 6th 1918, and was repatriated on November 18th 1918. The Cox & Co records erroneously refer to him as ‘Capt W.Drury-Lowe’ of the Notts & Derby Regiment, but this must be this officer as there not another Drury-Lowe listed. Information supplied by the vendor suggests that the oil portrait was painted on the back of biscuit tin, and it was certainly framed in Germany judging by the label on the back panel. His medal index card also refers to the ‘Exonerated Officers List’, which clearly references his time as a POW, and the subsequent questions he would have been required to answer to army command upon his repatriation. Attestation papers suggest he first enlisted for service wit the 3rd Battalion Sherwood Foresters in March 1908. Unusually, the mounting bar for the medals is marked for Spink & Son of London, but whether they just supplied the bar or mounted the medals is unknown. Condition: generally very good. The medals are swing mounted (with original ribbons) on a bar for wear, with a fine colour and patina to each. The portrait is generally good, with just a little chipping to the frame in places.

Lot 117

A selection of WW2 German insignia and medals. To include: an Iron Cross second class, marked ‘49’ to the suspension ring for Josef Feix Söhne (complete with ribbon), 2 x War Merit Cross with swords (one marked 11 to ring, for Grossmann & Co, Wein), a German Army ‘Heer’ sports vest insignia, a pair of Pith Helmet badges (4 prongs to eagle badge, 2 broken away, 3 prongs to national colours), these are likely old post war pieces. 6 items. Condition: generally good, but some service and age related wear to the medals.

Lot 204

WW2 era service medals, papers, and other items relating to T.3779389 Dvr A.Lee of the Kings Regiment, and latterly the Royal Army Service Corps. To include: the 1939 Star, France & Germany Star, Defence Medal, and 1939-45 War Medal, the card transit box of the medals and slip. Also, The Kings Badge for Loyal Service with named slip. Various WW2 era booklets and commercially produced photographs, Dvr Lee’s service and pay book, release book and other documents relating to his service. All of the above are housed in a period embroidered cotton slip wallet. Also, a chrome plated Metropolitan Police whistle and chain, a small leather coin purse, silver plated shell caddy spoon, 2 miniature toy canons, a white metal and banded agate seal (no engraving), an enamel badge for the Cygnet Windermere, a scout badge, books and other sundry items. Condition: generally good, with age and service related wear. The medal would appear to have never been worn, the ribbons have not been fitted and the medals are still in their paper wrappings. The paperwork shows normal service use and light soiling, as does the cotton slip wallet.

Lot 345

A good selection of modern and and some vintage embroidered British military patches, plus some European and Commonwealth examples. To include: Royal Army Ordnance Corps ammunition trade badge (1948-1959) other RAOC embroidered and bullion badges, Royal Logistic Corps bullion badges, Royal Navy bomb disposal badges and other RN patches, Royal Air Force bomb disposal squadron patches, a reproduction WW2 Home Guard bomb disposal badge, Algerian Police patch, Austrian Police patch, Australian police and army patches, Canadian army technician qualification badges, Royal Canadian Navy diving qualification badges, and a Dutch Explosive Ordnance Disposal Badge. 45 patches in total. Condition: very good. Many of the patches appear to have never been used, and remain in good clean condition. Each badge is loosely mounted on to a paper background, with label (easuly removable if desired).

Lot 28

A WW1 1915 Star Officers trio, awarded to Lieutenant, later Captain William A.Morgan of the Army Pay Corps, and the Royal Army Pay Department. To include: the 1915 Star, British War Medal, and the Victory Medal. Notes: Captain Morgan’s medal index card confirms the trio as his full medal entitlement. Additionally it notes that he was awarded a Silver War Badge (badge number 383961) on June 26th 1918, with his correspondence dress being noted as ‘The Stock Exchange London E.C.2.’ His medal index card also provides 3 other addresses, for properties in Aberdeen Park, Highbury, Maidenhead, and Lauderdale Mansions, Maidavale. Condition: generally good. Age related toning to each of the medals, but with very limited signs of polishing or wear. Each of the medal’s ribbons are later replacements.

Lot 94

A WW1 / WW2 medal group, awarded to 2nd Lt Bernard Whitecroft Tolton of the South Staffordshire Regiment. To include: the British War Medal, Victory Medal, Defence Medal, and the 1939-45 War Medal, a WW1 miniature pair, ribbon bars, a Polish Army medal for war 1939-45, a white metal (silver) WW2 Polish 1st Anti-tank artillery regiment badge (marked B1), with screw back (marked Spink & Son London), and 2 photographs which appear to show Lt Tolton in the first and Second World War. Notes: 2nd Lt Tolton’s medal index card confirms that the BWM and Victory medal pair are his full medal entitlement, but he is also entitled to the Silver War Badge. He is shown on the General List in 1940 as a Lieutenant, and by 1942 he is shown as a Lieutenant in the Army Pay Corps. His connection to the Polish medal and silver badge is unknown, but the WW2 photograph appears to show him wearing a Poland cloth shoulder title. Condition: generally very good. Some service wear to some pieces, plus some fading to some of the ribbons.

Lot 302

To include: an embroidered 52 Lowland Division (mountain) title, a printed 14th army printed patch, a pair of 43rd Wessex Division printed patches, a printed Allied Forces South East Asia patch, an embroidered 2nd Army patch, a pair of printed 11th East Africa Division formation signs, a 21st Army Group printed patch, a Drivers trade patch, a Skilled Drivers trade patch, a Worcestershire Regiment bullion blazer badge, plus 6 other embroidered patches. 18 total. Condition: generally good, with normal service wear. A number of the patches are uniform removed, and have light soling and pulls to the fabric that you’d associate with normal use.

Lot 265

Made in heavy gauge die stamped brass, with 6 stout lugs to the reverse. Approximately 7.7cm x 6.8cm. Condition: good, honest age and service wear. Polishing to the front has worn away the details on the feathers of the eagle, plus softened the detail on the wording and scroll. Age related darkening and patina to the reverse side, plus ingrained old polish.

Lot 68

A WW1 Manchester Pals Distinguished Conduct Medal, 1915 Star Trio, awarded to 9014 Sjt George Royle of the 17th Battalion Manchester Regiment. To include: the DCM, 1915 Star, British War Medal, Victory Medal, Sjt Royle’s cap badge, a period uniform photographs of George, showing his rise through the ranks, from L/Cpl, Sgt, and finally as an officer cadet. There is also a 1919 dated certificate pertaining to his transfer to the reserve, and several period newspapers clippings. Notes: George Royle (1893-1933) enlisted as a Private with the Manchester Regiment on September 4th 1914, almost certainly as a result of Kitchener’s call for 100,000 volunteers made on August 11st 1914. George underwent his training period, but wasn’t deployed to France until late 1915, with his Medal Index Card confirming that he disembarked on November 8th 1915. The date of his promotion to the rank of Serjeant is uncertain, but his September 3rd 1919 dated citation for his DCM emphasises his importance in the war effort. It reads: 17/9014 Sjt. G.ROYLE 17th Bn. (Stockport) Since November 1915, he has acted as a signal Serjeant. In addition to his technical skill, which is of the best, he has proved himself in action to possess cool courage and devotion to duty, notably when mending lines in the Douve and Menin Road sectors, and maintaining communications during the battle of St. Quentin in March 1918. From April until July 1918, he performed the duties of a signal officer most successfully. (3.9.19). At the conclusion of the war, George was transferred to the Army Reserve on February 13th 1919. A newspaper clipping included in the lot, and his transfer to reserve document confirms that at the time of his demobilisation, George was undergoing officer cadet training at Ridley Hall in Cambridge (his white hat band also signifies this). Anecdotal evidence from Sjt Royle’s family, suggests that suffered the effects of Mustard Gas during the conflict, and this ultimately contributed to his early death in 1933. Of interest is the inclusion of a Military Medal, also named to Sjt G. Royle. Long held ‘family lore’ was that George had also earned an M.M during the conflict, and therefore a number of years ago, a medal was acquired from a M.O.D approved supplier, and named to him. Subsequent investigations by the family and by ourselves can find no evidence of the award of an M.M, but it is nevertheless included in the collection. As per the requirements for modern replacements of an M.M, the suspender is fixed. The group has been consigned directly from George’s family, and has never previously been offered for sale. Condition: generally very good. Normal age related toning to the medal group, but limited signs of polishing. The cap badge is good, and the newspaper clippings are in remarkably good condition for their age. The modern M.M is understandably, almost mint condition.
