Just 12 New Zealand medals issued to the Royal Navy and Royal Marines with this reverse date, all of them from H.M.S. Falcon. James Lukes (alias Lucas) was born in Blandford, Dorset in September 1827 and joined the Royal Marines at Poole in May 1847. Drafted to the 58th Company of the Portsmouth Division, he first served at sea in H.M.S. Prince Regent in the period March 1848 to February 1851. But it was in his next seagoing appointment in the Britannia that he first witnessed active service, when he was landed with the Royal Marine Brigade in the Crimea and saw action at Balaklava and before Sebastopol; his service record refers but makes no mention of his presence at Inkermann. Further seagoing appointments having ensued, Lukes served variously in the Falcon and Esk in the period October 1863 to October 1867 and, more specifically, in North Island, New Zealand in early 1864, when he was landed from the former ship as a member of its 12-man Naval Brigade contingent. Lukes was finally discharged in October 1867, the same year in which he was awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal. Sold with copied record of service.
The rare and historic Commission document appointing Mr C. D. Lucas, Royal Navy, as Acting Mate on the steam sloop Hecla, in which vessel, one month later, he won the very first Victoria Cross Original Commission document, signed by Vice-Admiral Sir Charles Napier, appointing Mr C. D. Lucas as Acting Mate on the steam sloop Hecla, dated Hango Head, 21 May 1854, folded and repaired but generally in good condition £1,600-£2,000 --- Importation Duty This lot is subject to importation duty of 5% on the hammer price unless exported outside the UK --- --- Provenance: Dix Noonan Webb, April 2006. Charles Davis Lucas was born in Drumargole, Armagh, Ireland, on 19 February 1834. Serving as a Mate aboard the Hecla, he became the first man to be awarded the Victoria Cross. The Register of the Victoria Cross states of the action: On 21 June 1854 in the Baltic, H.M.S. Hecla, with two other ships, was bombarding Bomarsund, a fort in the Aland Islands. The fire was returned from the shore, and at the height of the action a live shell landed on Hecla’s upper deck, with its fuse still hissing. All hands were ordered to fling themselves flat on the deck, but Mr Lucas with great presence of mind ran forward and hurled the shell into the sea, where it exploded with a tremendous roar before it hit the water. Thanks to Mr Lucas’s action no one was killed or seriously wounded’. (V.C. London Gazette 24 February 1857). Lucas later attained the rank of Rear-Admiral. He died on 7 August 1914.
The rare and important Second War St. Nazaire raid D.S.C. group of seven awarded to Lieutenant-Commander (E.) W. H. Locke, Royal Navy, who was Warrant Engineer aboard H.M.S. D.S.C. London Gazette 11 September 1945: ‘For gallantry, determination and devotion to duty in H.M.S. Campbeltown in the raid on St. Nazaire in March 1942.’ Wilfrid Harry Locke was born in Surrey on 5 March 1910 and entered the Royal Navy in January 1926. Appointed as a Warrant Engineer in October 1941, he was placed in charge of the engine-room of the former American four-stacker Campbeltown in early 1942, which ship had been allocated a key role in forthcoming Operation ‘Chariot’, namely to ram the southern caisson of the Normandie Dock in St. Nazaire, laden with delayed action explosives, thereby destroying the facility and denying the Tirpitz use of the only suitable dry-dock on the Atlantic coast. Accordingly, over a two-week period in March 1942, the Campbeltown was fitted out at Devonport and outwardly altered to resemble a German Mowe-class torpedo boat, while internally she was fitted with a special tank containing four tons of T.N.T. and eight-hour delay fuses, which were to be activated two hours before she reached the Normandie Dock. Setting out on her final voyage with the raiding force on 26 March, she took over as Force Leader shortly after midnight on the 28th, when seven and a half miles remained in the run up the Loire. Finally, at about 0130, with less than two miles to go, the German defences awoke. C. E. Lucas Phillips takes up the story in The Greatest Raid of All: ‘A continuous stream of projectiles of all sorts was now striking the Campbeltown, but so violent was the sound of our own weapons that the ring of bullets on her hull and the crack of small shells was hardly noticed; but when larger shells shook her from stem to stern none could be unaware, and what every survivor was to remember for ever afterwards was the unchecked glow of the darts of red and green tracer flashing and hissing across her deck and the quadruple whistle of the Bofors shells. Bullets penetrated her engine and boiler-rooms, ricocheting from surface to surface like hornets, and Locke, the Warrant Engineer, ordered hands to take cover between the main engines of the condensers, except for the throttle watchkeepers ...’ With 200 yards to go a searchlight fortuitously illuminated the check-point of the lighthouse on the end of the Old Mole, enabling Lieutenant-Commander S. H. Beattie on the Campbeltown’s bridge to correct his aim on the caisson. Having then ploughed through the steel anti-torpedo net, the old four-stacker closed on her collision course at 20 knots, and every man aboard braced himself for the impact. At 0134 the Campbeltown crashed into the gate, rearing up and tearing the bottom out of her bows for nearly 40 feet. Commando assault and demolition parties streamed ashore, while below the sea cocks were opened to ensure the Germans could not remove her before she blew up. As she settled by the stern, Beattie evacuated the crew via M.G.B. 314, and Lieutenant Mark Rodier’s M.L. 177. Locke and Beattie, with some 30 or more of Campbeltown’s crew boarded the latter, and started off down river at 0157 hours. Lucas Phillips continues: ‘The boat was embarrassingly overcrowded but Winthrop, Campbeltown’s doctor, helped by Hargreaves, the Torpedo-Gunner, continued to dress and attend to the wounded both above and below deck. Very soon, however, they were picked up again by the searchlights lower down the river and came under fire from Dieckmann’s dangerous 75mm and 6.6-inch guns. Rodier took evasive action as he was straddled with increasing accuracy. The end came after they had gone some three miles. A shell ... hit the boat on the port side of the engine-room lifting one engine bodily on top of the other and stopping both. Toy, the Flotilla Engineer Officer, went below at once. Beattie left the bridge and went down also. He had no sooner left than another shell hit the bridge direct. Rodier was mortally wounded and died a few minutes afterwards ... The engine room was on fire, burning fiercely, and the sprayer mechanism for fire-fighting had also been put out of action. Toy, who had come up momentarily, at once returned to the blazing compartment but was never seen again. Locke, Campeltown’s Warrant Engineer, was able partially to repair the extinguisher mechanism. The flames amidships divided the crowded ship in two, but the ship’s company continued to fight the fire for some three hours by whatever means available. At length, when all means had failed and the fire had spread throughout the boat, the order to abandon ship was given at about 5 a.m. One Carley raft had been damaged, but few of the wounded ratings were got away on the other, and the remainder of those alive entered the icy water, many of them succumbing to the ordeal. All of Campbeltown’s officers were lost except Beattie and Locke, among those who perished being the brilliant and devoted Tibbets, to whose skill and resourcefulness the epic success of the raid was so much due and whose work was soon to be triumphantly fulfilled.’ Locke and the other survivors were rounded up by the Germans by 0930 hours, which was expected to be the last possible time for the acid-eating, delayed action fuses in Campbeltown to work. Thus it was with all the more satisfaction that at 1035 hours the British prisoners, gathered together in small groups across the St. Nazaire area, heard the terrific explosion which blew in the caisson and vaporised Campbeltown’s bows. The stern section was swept forward on a great surge of water and carried inside the Normandie Dock where it sank. Thus, the main goal of the operation was achieved for a cost of 169 dead and about 200 taken P.O.W., many of them wounded, out of an original raiding force of 611 men. Yet only six of Campbeltown’s gallant crew were eventually decorated, Beattie being awarded the Victoria Cross. For his own part, the wounded Locke was hospitalised at Le Baule and Rennes, prior to being transferred to Marlag und Milag Nord camp at Tarnstedt at the end of April 1942. Nor was he a willing prisoner, official records revealing his part in the digging of a 130ft. tunnel from the camp’s dining room in September 1943, as part of a team of 30 men. That having been discovered by the enemy, he joined a team of 60 men in April 1944 in digging another tunnel parallel to the old one, but this too was discovered when a section of the roof collapsed. He also volunteered to make a hasty exit by wire cutting, but this plan was vetoed by the Escaping Committee. His award of the D.S.C. was not gazetted until after his liberation, a distinction that prompted his former boss, Lord Mountbatten, to write in person: ‘From my personal knowledge as Chief of Combined Operations, I know how well deserved this recognition is and am delighted to see that the part you played in such a hazardous expedition has been recognised nearly four years afterwards. I hope that you have fully recovered from your captivity and should like to wis...

Registration – OU69 DXHChassis No. – SGT09KKFB12011MSM.O.T. – June 2025Odometer – 168Southern GT have built a fearsome reputation in the evocation car market by producing the highest quality GT40 kits and parts available today. ‘OU69 DXH’ doubles down on that reputation by having been fastidiously built from a complete kit over 10 years with over 5,000 hours expended. This culminated in ‘OU69 DXH’ gaining its Individual Vehicle Approval (IVA) in 2019 and being allocated this year specific registration number. Whilst based on the iconic MKI GT40, ‘OU69 DXH’ features MKII rear bodywork. ‘OU69 DXH’s’ tubular spaceframe and aluminium panelled body is propelled by a 302 cu. in. V8 stroked to 347 cu.in. (5.7-litres) built by Gurney Weslake and producing over 400 bhp. Power is transmitted to the rear wheels via a Quaife five speed transaxle with an upgraded ATB (500 bhp) differential. This superlative car comes with a valid, advisory free MOT until June 2025. Given the quality and specification of ‘OU69 DXH’ it could legitimately be considered less of an evocation and more a highly individual road / race car in its own right.‘OU69 DXH’s’ low, sleek body comprises of around 70 aluminium panels affixed to a tubular spaceframe skeleton, complete with an integrated roll cage. The panels are finished in Ford Performance Blue and encompass some superb GT40 details. First there are the signature doors that constitute part of the roof and include in built “helmet humps.” Correct bulleted fuel caps with lock internals are also fitted as are period correct “bullet” wing mirrors. Modern enhancements include LED rear lights and an external electric master kill switch. ‘OU69 DXH’ squats purposefully on the correct ‘BRM’ 15-inch magnesium alloy wheels – 8J at the front and 10J rears. These are centrally mounted via triple eared knock on spinners.‘OU69 DXH’s’ focused cabin manages to blend an authentic 1960’s race car aesthetic with a raft of invaluable modern conveniences and enhancements. The period faithful, low slung black leather bucket seats immediately grab the eye. These are perforated with six rows of alloy eyelets. Red Luke five point, 2-inch racing harnesses are fitted. An adjustable peddle box features, together with brake bias adjustment. The wide dashboard is flocked to reduce glare, and this provides a home to a set of Autometer “pro comp” gauges including a 6-inch tachometer and 200 mph speedometer. A race GPS data logger is also fitted and period accurate Lucas style toggle switches abound. There are a number of subtle, modern enhancements also included here. A heating and air-conditioning system are present, as is a heated windscreen, engine immobiliser, keyless ignition and starter button. A Lifeline hard plumbed fire extinguishing system is present with cockpit and engine bay jets.Needless to say, ‘OU69 DXH’s’ mechanical specification is no less awe-inspiring. The Gurney Weslake built V8 features a balanced crankshaft, KB performance pistons with steel conrods, and full ported and polished aluminium ARP heads housing a COMP Cam’s extreme race camshaft. Also noteworthy is an ARP head stud conversion with hydraulic rollers and COMP Cam valve strings. Edelbrock rocker covers are fitted together with four barrel Holley carburettor, MSD digital distributor, AP lightweight flywheel and AP racing clutch. In terms of ancillaries, a custom alloy radiator with high flow core is fitted, as is a “bundle of snakes” tubular exhaust system with ceramic coating. Underneath ‘OU69 DXH’ lurks a rose jointed race suspension, with machined uprights and adjustable antiroll bars. These work together with Ohlins adjustable height coil overs with three way adjustable dampers. Braking is courtesy of AP Racing four callipers front and rear, acting upon AP Racing grooved and vented disks on machined hubs.Given the attention to detail and fastidiousness of this unique build, it may come as no surprise that the vendor rates all aspects of ‘OU69 DXH’ as “excellent.”

• Sold on behalf of a deceased estate • Completely restored In the Edwardian era, Lagonda concentrated mainly on the production of light cars before revertingto sporting and luxury models in the mid-1920’s with the introduction of the 14/60. Designed by Arthur Davidson, the two-litre, four-cylinder engine featured twin camshafts mounted high in the block and operated inclined valves in hemispherical combustion chambers. Power output of this advanced engine was a highly respectable 60bhp. For the 1929 racing season, a ‘low chassis’ Speed Model was introduced, featuring revisions to the chassis front end and a higher compression engine fitted with twin carburettors. The Speed Model had resulted from the factory’s Le Mans effort of 1928 when the 2.0 Litre, driven by André d'Erlanger and Douglas Hawkes finished 11th overall in the 24 Hour Endurance Classic. In 1930, a supercharged version was introduced with a ‘blower’ mounted vertically in front of the engine and fitted with a counterweighted crankshaft. A Powerplus supercharger was specified at first, but most ‘blown’ 2.0 Litres came with a Cozzette supercharger. Thus equipped, a ‘low chassis 2.0 Litre was capable of up to 90mph. This ‘Low Chassis’ 2.0 Litre was offered for sale in December 2001 at Bonhams Olympia auction where it was purchased by Mr. Simon Carrel. Originally one of the supercharger-equipped models, chassis number 'OH9859' retains its original and extremely rare fabric-covered four-door tourer coachwork, which has been preserved as part of a no expense-spared, 'ground upwards' restoration. This was carried out with the aim of producing a usable car, not a concours winner car. The restoration included boring and stroking the engine to approximately 2.4 litres and installing a new solid billet Allen crankshaft, new Cosworth con-rods and pistons, and high-lift camshafts. A new downdraft, crossflow cylinder head was specially cast (in iron) and gas flowed, and a pre-war Rootes-type Wade supercharger acquired. The engine has been bench tested and produced 148bhp. The supercharger's original position was vertical in front of the engine while the dynamo sat beneath the radiator protruding forward. It was discovered that the Wade blower would not fit in the 'correct' position but would fit under the radiator, so the positions of the dynamo and supercharger were swapped, making the Lagonda look a bit like a blown 4½ litre Bentley. The car came with an Alvis Speed 20 synchromesh gearbox fitted, which has been retained, while the clutch has been converted and is now a Borg & Beck unit. All corossion was removed from the bodywork, which was strengthened and re-covered in new fabric, while the interior received new leather seats and panelling. Proper Lucas P100 'Bulls Eyes' were sourced and installed, and all the chrome work re-plated. 'PL 6619' was restored with a view to vintage competitions and we are advised that all the modifications are VSCC accepted because they were possible in pre-war days. It is extremely fast, 0-60mph in under 11 seconds, very reliable and great fun. It has enormous torque and will pull up any hill in third gear and easily outperforms any standard 4½ litre Lagonda. Consigned by John Tomlin Interested parties should note that a new V5 registration document has been applied for from DVLA and is due shortly. • One of 149 right hand drive examples• Ferrari Classiche certified• Highly original and matching numbers example One of the most talked about releases at 1968 Paris Motor Show was Ferrari's brand new Berlinetta. It was expected to be called Daytona to celebrate Ferrari's 1-2-3 finish in the 1967 Daytona 24 Hours race. At the launch however the press was proven wrong as it was just dubbed 365 GTB/4 but the name stuck and to this day it is still referred to as the 'Daytona'. Ironically, it was intended to be called Daytona - but when the name leaked out prematurely Ferrari reverted to using the traditional system. Pininfarina's Leonardo Fioravanti, later the famed Carrozzeria' director of research and development, was responsible for the influential shark-nosed styling, creating a package that reinstated the traditional 'long bonnet, small cabin, short tail' look in a manner suggesting muscular horsepower while retaining all the elegance associated with the Italian coachbuilder's work for Maranello. One of Pininfarina's countless masterpieces, the influential shark-nosed body style featured an unusual full-width transparent panel covering the headlamps, though this was replaced by electrically operated pop-up lights to meet US requirements soon after the start of production in the second half of 1969. Fioravanti later revealed that the Daytona was his favourite among the many Ferraris he designed. The engine was based on the 330 unit and featured double overhead camshafts, first seen on a production Ferrari only two years earlier. The oval tube ladder type frame was as traditional as the engine layout. Although the prototype had been styled and built by Pininfarina in Turin, manufacture of the production version was entrusted to Ferrari's subsidiary Scaglietti in Modena. The Daytona's all-alloy, four-cam, V12 engine displaced 4,390cc and produced its maximum output of 352bhp at 7,500rpm, with 318lb/ft of torque available at 5,500 revs. Dry-sump lubrication enabled it to be installed low in the oval-tube frame, while shifting the gearbox to the rear, in the form of a five-speed transaxle, meant 50/50 weight distribution could be achieved. The all-independent wishbone and coil-spring suspension was a recent development, having originated in the preceding 275 GTB. Unlike the contemporary 365 GTC/4, the Daytona was not available with power steering, a feature then deemed inappropriate for a 'real' sportscar. There was, however, servo assistance for the four-wheel ventilated disc brakes.Air conditioning was optional, but elsewhere the Daytona remained uncompromisingly focussed on delivering nothing less than superlative high performance. In 1968 the Daytona was the most expensive production Ferrari ever and, with a top speed in excess of 170mph, was also the world's fastest production car. The Daytona would be manufactured for just four years and not until the arrival of the 456 GT in 1992 would Ferrari build anything like it again. Only 1,300 Berlinetta models and 121 Spyder convertibles had been made when production ceased in 1973.One of only 149 Daytona’s manufactured in right hand drive configuration, chassis number '15381' was ordered from Maranello Concessionaires in January 1972 by Callanders Garage of Glasgow for Mr. Alistair Stewart. The car was delivered complete with toolkit, air conditioning and Voxson Sonar stereo radio/cassette with electric antenna. It was finished in Blu Chiaro Metallizzato with beige Connolly leather interior trim and one of only six UK cars finished in this elegant colour combination. Completed in March 1972 and dispatched from Maranello to the UK, Mr. Stewart took delivery on 25th April 1972 and the Ferrari was first registered as 'KHS 12K'. Additional items supplied and fitted by Maranello Concessionaires included extra side lights, a 'Prancing Horse' on the boot lid, a nose bar, and Lucas spot lamps. Mr. Stewart owned the car for a couple of years before selling it to Mr. Sandford, a Surrey-based motor dealer and owner of Roy Salvadori's former business, Elmbridge Motors. The Ferrari was then offered for sale without success, it was also painted red in an effort to find a buyer, however Mike Sandford decided to keep the car for his own personal use and reregistered it as 'GGT 1N' in 1975. The caring custodian Mike Sandford drove the car sparingly on leisurely jaunts from his home near Petworth to Goodwood and for get-togethers with friends at London's Steering Wheel Club. Having owned the car for more than 30 years and covering fewer than 7,000 miles during that time (as confirmed by a complete set of MoT test certificates) he decided to sell the car and re-registered it as 'NRX 572K'. In early 2006, the car was sold to Graham Horder and treated to a mechanical overhaul by Reeders. In February 2012, the car was purchased by John Mayston-Taylor, former proprietor and MD of Lynx. With a mere 26,862 miles recorded, the car was given a thorough mechanical overhaul and returned to its original colour of Blu Chiaro Metallizzato, while being reregistered as 'OVV 4'. Official Ferrari Classiche Certification was granted in January 2013 and the following September the car returned to Italy for the first time in more than 40 years, participating in the exclusive Italia Classica and running faultlessly throughout the event. A discreet, switchable, electric power steering unit was installed, which we are told transforms the driving experience. In 2016 the car changed hands to our vendor, after being offered for auction at Goodwood. Purchased to fulfil a dream of driving a Ferrari Daytona to Monaco which he duly completed, the car then became part of a private collection in Cheshire. When first purchased, Trevor Farrington Ltd of Cheshire maintained the car and when not in use it is permanently garaged in a heated room. The car has been treated to further regular services and was recently serviced in January of this year. The car is sold complete with V5C registration document, Ferrari Classiche Red Book, its original leather wallet with all books and the original tool roll complete with tools. Copies of original factory correspondence, service and repair invoices, and near every MoT test certificate are included. Currently sitting on chrome wire wheels (the original five star wheels are also sold with the car). With a total mileage of just 31,500 and multiple long-term ownership including nearly a decade with our vendor, the car remains in highly original and unmolested condition, making it very rare among cars of its type today. Benefitting from a recent service and driving superbly, this iconic low-mileage Daytona must be one of the very best examples currently available.
