George Stacey (1787-1857) English Quaker and Abolitionist, rare Daguerreotype Portraits, an important collection of 17 portraits comprising 9 cased daguerreotypes, 7 collodion positives (1 ruby glass) and a coloured salted-paper print. Subjects include George Stacey, Mary Stacey, John Barclay Stacey, Henry George Stacey, Ellen Howard (with baby Effie), William Barclay and various other family members. Photographers include Timothy Le Beau (2), Antoine F.J. Claudet (3), William E. Kilburn (1), Richard Beard (1) and John J.E. Mayall (1). Many plates presented in their original named and gilt-tooled leather cases, various sizes (sixth plate, quarter plate, half plate etc.) One case bearing an old penned paper label inscribed 'George Stacey and Mary Stacey of Lordship House, taken about 1854-56. He died 1857 She died 1876'. Others labelled 'JBS and HGS', 'Ellen Howard with Effie', 'William Barclay taken Aug. 1856 age 66 and 6 months', etc. Notes: George Stacey was a partner in a firm of chemists and had various other business interests including a stake in the Stockton and Darlington Railway. In 1818 he married Deborah Lloyd (of the Lloyd's banking family) who bore him eight children. She died in 1841 and he subsequently married Mary Barclay. No offspring resulted from this union. Stacey became a leading member of the newly-formed Anti-Slavery Society (1823) and was one of four British delegates sent to America to help resolve matters following a schism within the Society of Friends, in Salum, Iowa (1842-3). Stacey is depicted in the foreground of an oil painting by Samuel Lucas showing the 1840 Anti-Slavery Convention (National Portrait Gallery Collection, London) and he is also identified in a few related prints. Photographs of him, however, appear to be rarely encountered in the public domain. A daguerreotype of another British Abolitionist, George Donisthorpe Thompson (1804-1878), also by Richard Beard, c.1841, can be found in the collection of Boston Public Library. This is presented in a 'Beard' case, as indeed is the example included in the present Please note that ref. numbers 1, 4 and 5 on the list of portraits identifying the sitters are subsequent lots - 136, 137, 138. Ref. numbers 15, 16 and 17 are pairs - hence the total number of portraits in this lot is 17.

Betty Joel, a large cream upholstered modernist sofa, with squared arms and raised on casters 84 x 230 x 90cm (33 x 90 x 35in) Provenance: Both the sofa and the armchairs in the following lot were removed from 66 Frognal, Camden, London, the modernist house designed by architects Colin Lucas, Amyas Connell and Basil Ward. Connell Ward & Lucas were a pioneering firm of architects working in the Modern Movement in the UK. Connell and Ward were early admirers of Le Corbusier; Lucas, similarly influenced and frustrated by conventional builders, had set up his own company to develop ideas for reinforced concrete. The three worked as a team from 1933, for six years producing a series of houses that no contemporary firm could match. 66 Frognal is illustrated in 'Connell Ward & Lucas "Modern movement architects in England 1929 -1939"
