1978 Rolls-Royce Corniche Transmission: automaticMileage:50434One of just 1,108 fixedhead coupés built, the Corniche was announced just two weeks after Rolls-Royce entered receivership, initially sporting the rather long-winded title ‘Silver Shadow Mulliner Park Ward two door fixedhead coupé’. Corniche production began in Willesdon, London during 1971 two years before the aero business was separated from the car division and Rolls Royce Motors was born. The Corniche name was also attached to the Bentley version, assembled at Mulliner Park Ward, that later became the Continental. The Corniche model was first registered by Rolls-Royce Ltd in 1939 and was applied to a high-performance derivative of the Bentley MK.V which failed to see production due to the outbreak of World War II. The name taken from three roads that run between the sea and mountains along the French Riviera featuring the name ‘Corniche’ a part of the world that drew Sir Henry Royce most winters where he carried out much of his design work at his home in Le Canadel. This fixedhead coupé version was only produced for ten years between 1971 and 1981. Later examples benefitted from the much improved styling changes from 1976 including larger rear arches and more modern looking bumpers. Mechanically, upgrades included uprating the twin SU carburettor set up to a four-barrel Solex unit in 1975 with the model also enjoying firmer independent self-levelling suspension, four-wheel disc brakes, alloy radiator and oil cooler plus bi-level air conditioning from 1977.This example was registered in March 1978 and built to updated specification verified by the factory build and inspection sheets dated from July 1977 which are included in the extremely comprehensive history file. The original dealer pack plus bills of sale confirm the car was delivered to Lex Mead in Maidenhead in the January where an alarm was fitted to ‘Eleanor’ its Silver Lady. Other options taken included the Lucas fog lights (which remain today with covers) and “Sundym” glass, slightly tinted promising more glare reduction than privacy. First owner Mr Bailey from Cheltenham, after which this car spent most of its life in the south including time on Jersey. Owner manuals, dealer locators and instruction booklets are all factory issue. The first service book is fully stamped and a continuation book is almost complete totalling 21 entries from either Rolls-Royce official or specialist outlets. The second book was started in 2006 at 43,880 miles and the final addition was in 2019 at 49,197 although the car also benefited from a carburettor rebuild, new water and fuel pumps, a full brake overhaul with gearbox and engine oil changes in 2020; since 2018 the previous owner invested over £21,000 caring for this Corniche. MOT history from 1987 at 33,484 includes every test up to the current certificate that runs until 25 April 2022 and confirms the current mileage shown as just 50,708.Exterior finish of Walnut Metallic over Rose Gold is both bespoke and eye catching, the former refinished in 2020 when the original Everflex vinyl roof was removed followed by a back to bare metal repaint carried out by Rolls-Royce specialists at West Hoathly Garage. They took out both front and rear screens to ensure the perfect finish with new seals installed on refit. Arrow straight panels with precise gaps, typical of Rolls-Royce quality with original chrome offer little evidence of 44 years use. Bumper rubbers, typically nondescript black, are coloured to body with hubcaps finished to complement with matching pinstriping over base gold whilst Stateside classic Vitour Galaxy R1 tyres all round offer high speed rating, white band and plenty of tread. The cabin enjoys the atmosphere of a West End gentlemen’s club with beige leather trim (VM3234) presenting evidence of light use, offering unparalleled luxury and comfort throughout. Electric front seating operates smoothly and without delay as do the powered windows, aerial and central locking. In 2020, the walnut door-cappings were re-lacquered and polished plus a Nardi Classic steering wheel was fitted; the original also comes with the car. It is worth mentioning the high level of equipment this Corniche offers, cruise control, bi-level air conditioning, remote openings for boot and fuel and, as you would expect, everything works as it should. Entertainment comes courtesy of the option Pioneer radio cassette backed up by an original 8-track player also from Pioneer, complete with selection options. Flooring is immaculate throughout, Cumberland Stone carpets protected by lambswool over mats whilst the chrome kick plates subtly state that this is a Mulliner Park Ward assembled vehicle you are entering.Under the bonnet the legendary 6.75 litre L410 V8 silently goes about its business, this strictly maintained power plant offers instant start up with ultra-smooth distribution of 237bhp. The engine bay area presents to show standard and obviously there are no fluid leaks and it is worth noting the original sound deadening jacket remains in place offering little signs of age. Underneath shows factory protection and remains solid throughout with a full stainless exhaust system fitted.Motoring journalists James May and Quentin Wilson will confirm the Corniche really is the only way to travel, with fine examples offering decades of unrivalled motoring. This coupé remains capable of covering continents effortlessly, visually outstanding with comfort levels equal to any ‘first-class’ ocean liner. Appreciated by the ‘smart money’ Frank Sinatra and David Attenborough were both custodians of the Rolls Royce Corniche, drawn in, no doubt, by the engineering masterclass and its timeless elegance.Interested parties should satisfy themselves as to the description and condition of each lot prior to the sale. 1950 Citroën Light 15 Transmission: manualMileage:21731The Citroën Traction Avant was manufactured from 1934 to 1957. The Traction Avant, French for 'front-wheel drive', was designed by André Lefèbvre and Flaminio Bertoni in late 1933. While not the first produced front-wheel drive car, it was the world's first front-wheel drive steel monocoque production car and successfully pioneered front-wheel drive on the European mass car market. This method of construction was viewed with great suspicion in many quarters, with doubts about its strength. An unusual type of crash test was conceived taking the form of driving the car off a cliff to demonstrate its strength. Left hand drive versions were built in Paris, Belgium and also Denmark; right hand drive cars in Slough, England. The Slough version was called the Light Fifteen and the long wheelbase the Big Fifteen. This confusing terminology referred to the British fiscal tax rating of the time which was higher than the French. Models assembled in Slough had to be 51% UK parts to make them exempt from import duty, to protect the British vehicle manufacturers from foreign competition. The Slough built cars used 12 Volt Lucas electrics, headlights, dynamo and starter motor with Jaeger instruments and a walnut dashboard. The accompanying copy of the registration ledger reveals that the car was first registered in March 1950. Being a Slough built car, it is the more desirable specification and with the added benefit of being a ‘small boot’ car. Maintained to a high standard throughout its life, there are receipts for considerable work carried out throughout the 2000’s including an engine rebuild in 2011. The car presents very well in black and is reported by the vendor to run and drive very well. Only for sale to free up some room at his home, the car has been lovingly maintained and dry stored during his ownership along with his other classic cars.Supplied with its UK V5C registration document, MoT test certificates and various bills and invoices for restoration and maintenance work carried out. These right hand drive, Slough built, small boot cars are the most desirable Light 15’s and are versatile and immensely enjoyable classics.Interested parties should satisfy themselves as to the description and condition of each lot prior to the sale. Accordingly, buyers are on notice that each vehicle is offered ‘as is/as seen’ subject to the Terms and Conditions for the auction. Buyers are advised to inspect the vehicle in person or use a professional to carry out this service. Historics will not entertain disputes over descriptions.

1963 Bentley S3 Transmission: automaticMileage:94729The last Bentley to be built on a separate chassis, 1962 saw the introduction of the Bentley S3 factory bodied, standard steel saloon and, at first glance, it would appear that the all new S3 was merely an S2 with different headlamps. The introduction of the twin headlamps was clearly the most obvious change, but the differences did not end there. Further changes included the introduction of smaller bumper overriders and the repositioning of the front indicators and side lamps into one single unit on the front wing, resulting in a more attractive appearance. The S3's interior now had individual front seats in place of the split bench seat found in the earlier S-Types and some, like this one, had electric windows and front seat belts. Mechanically speaking the S3 was the same as the S2 with a 6230cc, Rolls-Royce V8 engine and automatic gearbox but this model was fitted with larger carburettors, improved power steering to aid smoother movement at parking speed and a Lucas vacuum-advance distributor to aid fuel consumption, making it almost identical in mechanical specification to the S3 Continental that was being produced at the same time. On 11th February 1963 this beautiful example of the marque was supplied new with the electric window option by Bristol Motors Co. Ltd. to Mr. F.G. Pratten. In 1990, the well-known marque specialist, Chelsea Workshop sold the car to a gentleman who took and stored the car at his family home near St. Tropez in the South of France; upon its return to the UK 20 years later he gave the car back to Chelsea Workshop and instructed them to renovate the Bentley, cost for which amounted to £60,000. Part of the renovation was to repaint the car in the original colour of Masons Black whilst retaining the original Tan leather interior and fit a very discreet air conditioning system. Mechanically the car was completely gone through including a brake overhaul, front suspension overhaul including replacing the front road springs, re-tempering the rear springs, overhauling the power steering ram, replacing PAS hoses and carrying out a full 24,000 mile service. Since all this work has been done the car has covered a mere 3,700 miles and looks, runs and drives as it did when it came out of Chelsea Workshop. The current owner purchased the Bentley in 2015, again from Chelsea Workshop; he lived almost next door to them and used the car as his local transport around London. This Bentley S3 is supplied with UK V5C registration document and a file containing copies of the chassis cards supplied by the R.R.E.C. and the MoT history confirming the mileage. Here is a fantastic opportunity to buy one of the best, post war Bentleys that can still be used as an 'everyday motor car'.Interested parties should satisfy themselves as to the description and condition of each lot prior to the sale. Accordingly, buyers are on notice that each vehicle is offered ‘as is/as seen’ subject to the Terms and Conditions for the auction. Buyers are advised to inspect the vehicle in person or use a professional to carry out this service. Historics will not entertain disputes over descriptions.

Original Robert Taylor Drawing and Breaching the Dam Dambusters Tribute Proof Collection both numbered 3/19. Issued with an Original Robert Taylor pencil drawing. This is a very special Tribute Edition, limited to just nineteen proofs representing the number of aircraft flown on the Dams Raid, and is dedicated to those outstanding aviators who took part in the legendary operation, perhaps the most famous operation in the annals of aviation history. Comprising all the signatures and components of the Collectors Edition, the Tribute Edition will be issued with each of the nineteen proofs accompanied by an Original Dambusters pencil drawing by Robert Taylor. Each of these unique drawings were completely different and feature the Lancasters involved in the Dambusters operation. Beautifully crafted, each drawing will be matted to conservation standards to include the original signatures of three of the most famous names associated with the Dambuster Raid. Matted with original Drawing, which is signed by Robert Taylor, MRAF Arthur Harris, Air Marshal Sir HAROLD (MICK) MARTIN KCB CB DSO* DFC* AFC RAAF (Matted signature), Squadron Leader DAVID J. SHANNON DSO* DFC* RAAF (Matted signature), Flight Lieutenant GEORGE A. CHALMERS DFC DFM. Colour print 37x24 signed by Robert Taylor, George Johnson, Ray Grayston, Grant Macdonald Les Munro, Fred Sutherland, Ken Lucas and Ken Macdonald. Pilots Shannon and Maudsley tried time and again to position their laden bombers correctly before managing to release their weapons - but the dam still held. Now success depended solely on Les Knight carrying the last bomb! With time and fuel now a concern, Knight's first effort to position, like Shannon and Maudsley before him, failed, but his second run favoured the brave. Les Knight released his bomb with absolute precision, striking the wall at precisely the crucial point. With a tremendous explosion the Eder Dam collapsed before their eyes. Robert Taylor's sensational new painting vividly shows the dramatic moment of impact. In the cockpit Knight and flight engineer Ray Grayston fight the controls to clear the dam, combining their physical strength to haul the lumbering Avro Lancaster up and over the dam and to clear the high ground that lies ahead. Below and behind them, the second of Germany's mighty western dams lies finally breached. All autographs come with a Certificate of Authenticity. The ex-R M 'Bob' Gilbert; highly successful historic racing1936 Bentley 4¼-Litre Racing Two-SeaterCoachwork by ShapecraftRegistration no. JR 5544Chassis no. B186HKEngine no. D5BF•Rebuilt as a competition car in the late 1980s•Extensively campaigned in VSCC and BDC events•Podium finisher at Le Mans in 2006•Well known and well documentedFootnotes:In the previous vendor's ownership for 33 years, chassis number 'B186HK' was originally completed by Park Ward as a four-door sports saloon and first registered on 27 October 1936. The original registration document does not exist but a continuation document issued on 1 December 1958 records a Capt Maurice Herbert Cousins of London SE 12 as its owner. The Bentley was later acquired by a Mr Stanley Aston of Hall Green, Birmingham (in 1960). The last evidence of its road use is an MoT certificate dated 28 April 1965. After that the car was left in an orchard in Wythall near Birmingham for 18 years. It was acquired by the previous owner on 28 March 1983. The Bentley was in a very sorry state (see pictures on file) and was completely beyond restoration in its then condition. At the same time a friend and colleague of the then owner acquired a similar car in a similar state. With the help of VSCC member Mr Bruce Spollon (subsequently the Club's President) work started on building two identical cars with the aim of competing in VSCC and other historic racing events. The other car was subsequently sold to a German competitor who unfortunately wrote it off at the Nürburgring. 'JR 5544' is the sole survivor of the two identical cars. The aim was to build cars that were both beautiful and looked the part, and the 'bare metal' restoration of 'JR 5544', which is fully documented and photographed, took some six years to complete. The car retains its original engine, gearbox and drive train while incorporating minor modifications as suggested by Rusty Russ-Turner in an article in the VSCC bulletin. Hass Motorsport completely rebuilt the engine. Chassis modifications involved a reduction in wheelbase of 10' by 'cutting and shutting' the original frame, while the front and rear track were widened by 1½' and 2' respectively. The original-pattern lever-type shock absorbers were retained, as were the standard drum brakes, though the original lever/rod mechanism was replaced by a twin-circuit hydraulic system. An aluminium two-seater body was produced by Shapecraft of Northampton to the owner's design and specification, using the original cast bulkhead and reconstructing the engine cover and bonnet around the original item. The interior was re-trimmed and re-upholstered by Ray Banks who, interestingly, was the designer and supplier of many upholstered props in the original 'Star Wars' films. The car was granted a VSCC eligibility certificate in August 1991. 'JR 5544' was subsequently campaigned extensively in VSCC hill climbs and race meetings, being always very competitive and much admired. Over the years it has been considerably modified as a racing car, although it is still road registered. The modifications include 2' SU carburettors, gas-flowed stainless steel inlet and exhaust manifolds. A new cylinder head was specially manufactured by Bentley specialists, Fiennes Engineering. Subsequently the car has been extremely quick and trouble-free. 'JR 5544' has competed extensively in VSCC and Bentley Drivers' Club events, nearly always being in the top three of any race in which it competed and often winning. It was also part of the winning team for two successive years in the VSCC's endurance race at Donington Park. This car is featured in Ray Roberts' book 'Bentley Specials and Special Bentleys' where he describes it as the best Bentley special he had ever seen. Despite competing, the car regularly won the BDC's Concours d'Élégance prize at its annual race meeting, and on many occasions won the award for the car BDC members would most like to take home. The car's last major competitive outing was in 2006 when it was invited to run in the 100th Anniversary race at Le Mans where, fittingly, it repeated the result of the works entry driven by Eddie Hall in 1936 by finishing 3rd and on the podium. The current vendor purchased the Bentley at Bonhams' sale at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in June 2016 (Lot 239), since when it has benefited from some mechanical refurbishment but has seen hardly any use. New Lucas headlamps and sidelights have been fitted, the radiator recored, brakes overhauled, the engine received a new alloy 'head and valves and its been returned to standard compression ratio. The engine will now require careful running in.The car comes complete with the special Bentley tools to remove the hubs and access the brakes. 'JR 5544' has a V5C document, VSCC eligibility papers and an FIA passport (which will require renewal) making it eligible to race in many historic events overseas. Numerous photographs exist of its original restoration and competition outings, together with all the original documentation relating to expenditure on the car over the years. The Stan West Collection1963 Bentley S3 Continental Sports SaloonCoachwork by H J MullinerRegistration no. 461 EPWChassis no. BC40XA*One of 68 bodied by H J Mulliner*Substantially known ownership history*Serviced and maintained by P&A Wood*The ultimate Grande Routière of its dayFootnotes:Bentley's magnificent Continental sports saloon has been synonymous with effortless high speed cruising in the grand manner since its introduction on the R-Type chassis in 1952. With the arrival of the final (S-Type) generation of six-cylinder cars in 1955, the Continental lost a little of its individuality but none of its exclusivity, and this trend continued after the arrival of the V8-engined S2 in 1959. Although the S2 appeared externally unchanged, its performance was considerably enhanced by the new 6,230cc V8 engine. Power-assisted steering was now standard and there was no longer the option of a manual gearbox, Rolls-Royce's own four-speed automatic being the sole offering. The Bentley Continental was, of course, exclusively a coachbuilt automobile. The firms of H J Mulliner, Park Ward, and James Young all offered bodies on the Continental S2 chassis. Quad headlamps were the S3's major styling innovation, and on many of the H J Mulliner, Park Ward-bodied Continentals were contained in slanting nacelles, giving rise to these models' 'Chinese Eye' sobriquet. Fog lights were still fitted, but these no longer also functioned as flashing indicators; instead, the indicators on the new models were incorporated into redesigned sidelights, positioned on the front of the wings. Headlamps aside, the most significant change was to the S3's engine, which boasted an increased compression ratio, larger carburettors, and a Lucas vacuum-advance distributor, modifications that raised peak power by some 7%. There was also improved power steering to ease manoeuvring at parking speeds. A further minor change was the adoption of smaller bumper over-riders and a slightly reduced radiator height of about 1.5 inches, giving a sloping bonnet line and improving forward vision. Individual front seats and arm rests became a standard feature, and more powerful lighting and additional indication lights and switches on the instrument panel were introduced, presenting a far more modern feel to the last of the S-series Bentleys. The S3 is perhaps the ultimate post-war Bentley in terms of appearance, performance and practicality, as well as the last medium sized Bentley to be offered with custom coachwork. H J Mulliner of Chiswick were responsible for some of the most iconic and beautiful coachwork designs on post-war Bentley chassis, especially the Continental variants. Of the 312 S3 Continentals built, H J Mulliner accounted for 68; Park Ward 148; the merged concern of H J Mulliner, Park Ward 75; and Graber a single chassis. Chassis number 'BC40XA' was delivered in January 1963 to its first owner, one R Valls, and first registered as '871 EYX'. The earliest document on file is an old-style continuation logbook, issued in 1970, listing two owners: Peter Garner of Norfolk and J J Forster of Lancashire, while a change of registration from 'PNG 14' to the current '461 EPW' is recorded also. Accompanying V5 registration documents list Hugo Investments Ltd of London E4 as owner from 14th January 2005, followed by Trevor Weston of Norfolk (from 28th April 2006) and then Stan West (from 8th August 2014). Renowned marque specialists P&A Wood serviced and maintained the Bentley for Mr Weston, and the Essex-based firm has continued to care for the car since its acquisition for the West Collection., the result being a truly immaculate car that ranks among the very best of its type. Related bills are on file together with a quantity of expired MoTs and tax discs. Presented in beautiful condition, 'BC40XA' represents a rare opportunity to acquire this greatly admired model, the culmination of H J Mulliner's development in the post-war era.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

He was made a C.B. in January 1917, and retired in 1920.
