Registration No: MKV 15FChassis No: B011033198H5HS0MOT: ExemptFaithful replica of the Hunter that took outright victory on the 1968 London-Sydney Marathon RallyHolbay Engineering tuned 1725cc OHV engine, twin Weber 45 DCOE carburettors, coupled to a four-speed manual gearbox with overdriveGenuine Minilite alloy wheels, with three spares on the roof plus a lockable spares boxBlessed with a strong bodyshell, tough suspension and 'bomb-proof' mechanicals, the Hillman Hunter always had the potential to be a successful rally car. Nevertheless, there was surprise when Andrew Cowan, Brian Coyle and Colin Malkin took the sole Works Hillman Hunter ('MKV15G') to outright victory on the 1968 London-Sydney Marathon (vanquishing factory BMC, Ford and Citroen opposition in the process).MKV 15F is a faithful replica of that car built by the late Gordon Jarvis. Under the bonnet is a Holbay Engineering tuned 1725cc OHV engine, fed by twin Weber 45 DCOE carburettors, coupled to a four-speed manual gearbox with overdrive. Gordon was working for Rootes in 1967 and it appears he had access to factory records to make this as faithful as possible to the winning car. It was also undertaken with Andrew Cowan’s full support and approval. Given its registration plate of MKV 15F, this wonderful recreation has been asked to ‘stand in’ for the genuine article at various shows and events. The exterior is a faithful homage to the original, with Capri blue paintwork, white roof and white stripe accents down the flanks, along with period stickers and decals including the ‘75’ London to Sydney rally number. The car has genuine Minilite alloy wheels, with three spares on the roof plus a lockable spares box. As per MKV 15G, there are Lucas roof, bonnet, and bumper mounted spotlights at the front, plus a Lucas 576 reversing light at the rear. The bodywork inside the boot was stiffened, and a larger 15-gallon Rapier fuel tank installed behind the rear seat. There is a Rootes bulkhead suspension top reinforcer fitted and an aircraft clock, stopwatch and Brantz Retrotrip. The car has been used on a number of events at home and overseas, proving to be very reliable over the years. The full specification is too detailed to list here so we advise prospective bidders to check the history file and view the car in person – we are certain it will not disappoint.Footnote: For more information, please contact:James McWilliamjames.mcwilliam@handh.co.uk07943 584760

A very special motor car completed to 1953 Le Mans specification by Lloyd and Alan Allard.British motorsport legend, Sydney Allard, built his Allard Motor Company into a fabled British car manufacturer from pre-war grass roots motorsport and engineering in London in the late 1930sThis example (chassis #3408) is the only genuine Allard JR constructed by Allard Sports Cars Ltd (holder of worldwide trademark) Completed to 1953 Le Mans JR specification by Lloyd Allard and Alan Allard, grandson and son of the legendary Sydney Allard Completed in 2019 and a potential entrant to some of the most prestigious motorsport events in the worldDesignated with period and sequence-correct chassis number #3408 from Allard factory records Offered with FIA accreditation - certification at final stage (GB12826) and offered with V5 papers for road registration (169 UYH) JR is offered with an additional 3 speed Lasalle transmission. It is currently fitted with the 4 speed T10 Borg WarnerOffering superb value for money, this is an exciting opportunity to enter into the rebirth of one of the most celebrated manufacturers of the 1950sNB;-Please note that this is a VAT qualifying vehicle-Photo credit Matt HowellBritish motorsport legend, Sydney Allard, built his Allard Motor Company into a fabled British car manufacturer from pre-war grassroots motorsport and engineering in London in the late 1930s. Best known for his ‘J’ Series sports racing cars, Sydney achieved iconic status with the 1950 JR followed by the J2X and J2X Le Mans, utilizing V-8 engines from Cadillac and Chrysler, and finally the JR in 1953.The JR ed the field in American sports-car racing in the early 1950s, forcing major manufacturers such as Ferrari and Jaguar to take stock after a renowned East Coast Allard J2 won eight major races in a row. Carroll Shelby drove a J2 with great success, and the fundamental idea of mating a British chassis with an American V-8 engine inspired Shelby to further advance this hybrid concept in developing the Cobra, a fact he readily acknowledged. This new, genuine, Allard JR heralds the rebirth of the Allard marque in modern times over sixty years since the last car rolled out of the Clapham factory in 1959. Seven JRs (chassis number #3401 to 3407) were built between 1953 and 1956 with #3408 naturally given to this car by archivist and first grandson to Sydney, Gavin Allard.Chassis number #3408 is built very close to the specification of the 1953 Le Mans JR chassis number #3402 by Lloyd Allard, which ran in the 1953 24 Hours of Le Mans, and in doing so, is eligible for accreditation by the FIA. This opens the door to eligibility for racing events around the world. With its removable FIA safety cage and other safety features, this JR could therefore be eligible to race at prestigious international events including the Le Mans Classic, the Grand Prix de Monaco Historique and Goodwood Revival. At its heart is a 5.4-litre (331cu.in) Cadillac OHV V-8 engine sourced from a K2 with an original Edmunds intake manifold and dual Carter carburettors, mated to a four-speed manual gearbox. Clothed in hand-formed all-aluminium bodywork and classically finished in British Racing Green, this JR was constructed using many correct, original Allard components in addition to the engine. These Allard parts include a Marles steering box, Lucas dynamo, a modified JR De Dion axle, front spindles and hubs, brake backplates front and rear, and an Allard speedometer and tachometer. With over two decades of experience in motor racing, motorsport fabrication and restoration of historic Allards, this example was largely constructed by master builder and second grandson Lloyd Allard, with assistance from his father (Sydney’s son) Alan, himself retired from a motorsport career.Historical input and technical basis of the JR design were driven by the original designer Dudley Hume. At the age of 93, Hume supplied his experience, support, and some 120 drawings to this project which he held close to his heart. David Hooper, erstwhile chief engineer and draftsman at Allard Motor Company also gave support and advice. With Hume’s original and contemporary input, this team joined forces to produce a superb car of stunning quality throughout utilising the same construction methods and materials as the 1950s JRs.This remarkable motor car was completed in 2019 and prepared by the second and third generations of the Allard family working together with the original Allard designer and chief engineer – all dedicated to seeing this cherished project reach an enviable conclusion. The JR is ready to be campaigned by its first owner in historic racing, indeed this JR has seen further development this year, visiting various circuits including Silverstone, Goodwood and Prescott to further develop the car.On and off the track, this would be an exciting opportunity for any historic racer or vintage sports car enthusiast as an investment into the rebirth of one of the most celebrated manufacturers of the 1950s. A potential gateway to some of the most prestigious motorsport events in the world and offered at an extremely competitive estimate, this really is a one-off, exciting opportunity that represents superb value for money with a lovely story behind it. Works at Small Heath on the night of 19-20 November 1940 - the original recommendation concludes with the statement that ‘the Regional Commissioner considers that Hadley’s actions deserve the George Cross.’ George Medal, G.VI.R., 1st issue (John Hadley); Defence Medal, mounted as worn, good very fine (2) £3,000-£4,000 --- G.M. London Gazette 11 April 1941: ‘John Hadley, Member, A.R.P. Rescue Party, Birmingham. As a result of aerial bombardment a four storey building collapsed. A man and a girl, who had taken shelter under a bench on the ground floor, were buried under the wreckage. Hadley, after three hours of effort with an oxy-acetylene apparatus, succeeded in cutting a way to the trapped couple, and rescued them. The precarious nature and weight of the debris made any form of propping or support for a tunnel impossible. The building was burning and work was suspended several times so that water could be directed into the tunnel. Hadley displayed great courage and determination in the face of grave danger.’ Lord Dudley, the Regional Commissioner, made a recommendation for the award of the George Cross to Hadley but this was refused on the basis that a works electrician, A. F. Stevens, had been gazetted for the George Medal in January 1941 for the same incident and for a similar act of gallantry. The night of 19th-20th November 1940 saw the first major aerial raid launched on Birmingham as part of a campaign by the German Luftwaffe designed to break the Brummie spirit. Coming five days after the destruction of Coventry, Birmingham fell prey to the most severe attack during the course of the Second World War. Lasting nearly all night the nine hours’ of intense bombing by 440 bombers killed 450 people and badly injured 540 others. Around 400 tonnes of high explosives were dropped during the raid – Hitler’s retaliation for British raids on Hamburg, Bremen and Kiel. Factories damaged in the raid included Lucas Industries and G.E.C. works and the Birmingham Small Arms Company (BSA) factory was also badly damaged – 53 employees were killed as they took shelter behind blast walls, 89 were injured, 30 of them seriously, and rifle production was said to have been halted for three months as a result. Sold with research including copied ‘Secret’ and confidential reports on the B.S.A. works raid and Selection Committee recommendation for the George Medal which concludes with the statement that ‘the Regional Commissioner considers that Hadley’s actions deserve the George Cross.’
