c.1930 AJS 350cc R7Registration no. BF 6356Frame no. M126165Engine no. R7/145258According to the accompanying dating letter, this R7's frame was manufactured in 1929 (believed October) while the engine dates from 1930 and is just two numbers away from the ex-Les Williams example in the sale (a list of 1929/1930 frame numbers is on file). Its previous owner had bought the AJS, without documents, as a restoration project from the late John Chapman of Surrey. The current vendor purchased the machine in November 2011, by which time the mechanicals had been rebuilt and the cycle parts painted and assembled, though numerous minor components were missing and an incorrect magneto fitted. In February 2013 the AJS was registered as 'BF 6356' with an arbitrary date of first registration (decided by the DVLA) recorded as 13th February 1929. The following components were fitted in 2016: new exhaust (made using a photograph on file); reconditioned correct Lucas NR1 racing magneto (invoice on file); new toolbox; and a reconditioned Smiths PA speedometer and correct Sturmey Archer drive (invoice available). A new UK-made fuel tank was fitted in 2018. Since completion the AJS has been started regularly using a paddock starter and has mainly been used for display at motorcycle shows. A full set of kick-start parts; rear numberplate; tax disc holder; twin float chambers; plug and exhaust spanners are included in the sale. The machine is also offered with a V5C document.Footnotes:As with all Lots in the Sale, this Lot is sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
1928 AJS 349cc K7 Racing MotorcycleRegistration no. not registeredFrame no. K43541Engine no. K43541•Delivered new to New Zealand•Dating from the first year of production•Restored in 2020•Full photographic record of the rebuildBy the late 1920s, AJS's overhead-valve 'Big Port' was nearing the end of its development, and in 1927 the works race bikes appeared with a new overhead-camshaft engine. Instead of the customary shaft and bevel gears, the camshaft was chain driven, its distinctive cast-alloy case extending forwards to the front-mounted magneto. After initial lubrication problems had been sorted out, works rider Jimmy Simpson rode the 350cc version to victory in the Belgian, Swiss, Austrian and European Grands Prix in 1927. A catalogued model from 1928, the 'cammy' AJS was built in 350cc (K7) and 500cc (K10) capacities initially, customer versions being equipped with three-speed gearboxes rather than the works bikes' four-speed units. By the end of the 1929 season the improved 350cc model (now designated 'M7') had chalked up victories in the German TT and the Grands Prix of Austria, Ulster and Europe. A 250cc version followed, Jimmy Guthrie winning the Lightweight TT on one in 1930. By this time Freddie Hicks had been hired as AJS's No.1 works rider and his renowned development skills had resulted in further improvements to the factory bikes, which scored 350-class wins at the Dutch TT and the Grands Prix of Germany, Austria, France and Ulster. Sadly, AJS's worsening financial situation curtailed further development, and although cammy S7 and S10 models were listed for 1931, production ceased later that year when the company was taken over by Matchless. This AJS K7 was delivered new to New Zealand in 1928 and rediscovered many years later, in 1953, abandoned in a shed on a sheep farm. Largely complete and in very sound condition when found, the machine went on to have various owners in New Zealand before being purchased and restored to its former glory in 2020 by the current vendor, who advises us that it is correct in detail for 1928. Noteworthy features include inverted control levers; push/pull throttle twistgrip; John Bull handlebar rubbers; correct Lucas racing magneto (fully rebuilt); and an André Hartford steering damper. Major restoration works included rebuilding the engine, gearbox and wheels, and nickel plating the brightwork. A full photographic record of the restoration, including before and after pictures, is offered with the machine.Magnificently presented, this beautiful cammy AJS starts readily and is said to be a pleasure to ride. Indeed, the vendor last rode the machine in May of this year and tells us that the experience was delightful.Footnotes:As with all Lots in the Sale, this Lot is sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding.Lot to be sold without reserve. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Wenceslaus Hollar (1607-1677), Henry Fitzalan, 12th Earl of Arundel (1512-1580) portrait on vellum, wearing gold figured blue/grey doublet, fur waistcoat and black beret trimmed with gold and white plume, in a modern circular ebonised wooden frame, 58mm diameter. (Provenance ; Bonhams fine portrait miniature sale, 28th April 2005, lot 203)Only a small number of portrait miniatures by Wenceslas Hollar, an artist more commonly associated with topographical etchings, are known. One, depicting Katherine of Aragon (previously identified as Margaret Roper), signed and dated 1652, is in the Royal Collection (RCIN 421499). It is deemed to be a copy of an earlier portrait miniature by Lucas Horenbout, court miniaturist to King Henry VIII. Similarly, the portrait miniature of Jane Seymour sold alongside the present lot at Bonhams, London, 25 April 2005, lot 202, is a copy of an earlier work by another of Henry VIII’s painters, Hans Holbein the Younger, and is signed and dated 1648. A prototype for the present portrait has not yet been identified but there are some similarities with a painting attributed to Hans Eworth of 1558, an engraving of which by John Henry Robinson is in the National Portrait Gallery, London (NPG D25140). Hollar was born in Prague and studied topographical engraving in Frankfurt. In 1636 he met Thomas Howard, 14th Earl of Arundel (1586-1646) whom he accompanied to London and received his patronage. By 1642 he was in the service of James, Duke of York. As a Royalist, he struggled to work during the Civil War and in 1645 he was captured but managed to escape and found work in Antwerp. In 1652 he returned to London and produced illustrations for books. His income was greatly affected by the Civil War and his drop in status and he died in poverty. The sitter became a page at the court of Henry VIIII aged 15. He was later summoned to Parliament and attended the trials of Anne Boleyn and her alleged lover. On his father’s death in 1544 he became Lord Arundel was made a Knight of the Garter and subsequently Lord Chamberlain. After the King’s death, he was Lord High Constable at Edward VI’s coronation, and again at Queen Mary’s coronation. He served Queen Mary, notably as Lieutenant General of the forces when war with France looked imminent, and he retained his offices under the reign of Queen Elizabeth I who recognised his value and importance at court, but did not trust him. He was arrested on suspicion of treason following a number of plots to depose the Queen and was placed under house arrest. He died as a free man, after returning to the privy council for a number of years, and was buried at Arundel Castle. Until the present lot was sold alongside the miniature of Jane Seymour at Bonhams in 2005, the Royal Collection’s portrait miniature of Katherine of Aragon was the only miniature by Hollar that had been identified. The sitter in that portrait was for a long time identified as Margaret Roper. It appears that Hollar had access to portraits in the collection of the 14th Earl of Arundell and executed copies. The comparative portrait by Hans Eworth mentioned in the catalogue note is possibly in the collection of the Duke of Norfolk. This information comes from the Online Dictionary of National Biography entry which includes a black and white image of the painting from the Courtauld Photographic Survey, the caption acknowledging the Duke of Norfolk.

The 'SA-30 Collection' - 30 exceptional vehicles chosen to celebrate 30 years of the Silverstone Classic and all excitingly offered at No ReserveA right-hand drive, UK-spec, 150bhp (CP) example in stunning Dark Blue with chrome wiresOriginally delivered new to Singapore before being brought back to the UK in 1987 still with the original owner who enjoyed the TR for a total of 45 years up until 2016Fully recommissioned and treated to a fresh coat of Dark BlueWith its rare factory hardtop (still in its original Mimosa Yellow)The clutch, flywheel and propshaft were balanced, the brakes were all replaced and a new up-rated radiator and renewed fuel lines were fittedPleasingly most of the original interior has been refreshed and retained apart from new carpetsA really lovely example of Triumph's classic TR6 which benefits from the more powerful engine and overdriveSharp, clean and ruggedly handsome, the TR6 looked far more modern than TR roadsters of old and proved a huge hit with the sporting driver of the early 1970's. Restyled in 1969 by Karmann of Osnabruck, the TR6 gained a full-width nose and a squared-off tail, however, under its new 'party frock' the chassis remained basically the same as its independently-rear-suspended TR5 predecessor. Handling was improved courtesy of wider wheels and a front anti-roll bar and the '6' was a little more refined than its predecessors featuring pile carpets, plush-looking bucket seats, a traditional wooden dashboard, and a full complement of instrumentation. The 150bhp 2.5-litre Lucas fuel-injected straight-six power unit was initially unchanged, but was detuned to 125bhp for the US market and subsequently for the UK market from 1973 onwards to meet stricter emissions regulations. Even in the later detuned spec, it could still hit 60mph in just 9.5 seconds with a top speed of 116mph.Originally delivered new to Singapore, this TR6 was built to 'CP' 150bhp UK-spec and was fitted from new with Overdrive and a 'factory' hardtop. Used sparingly at weekends and for special occasions, the TR6 was clearly the owner's pride and joy, and in December 1987, it moved with him back to the UK. As in Singapore, the Triumph was used occasionally at the weekends, always in the dry, and remained cossetted in a heated garage. Naturally, as the owner became older he was able to use the car less and less and when he sadly passed away in 2016, he had owned it for a remarkable 45 years. The car was acquired from his widow and, although in outstanding structural condition, it was obvious that it was in need of a little TLC. The decision was taken to recommission the TR and, once fully stripped, it was clear that the car was still in possession of all its original panels and never appeared to have been welded. With only minor areas of light surface rust, it was the perfect basis for a re-paint in a deep Dark Blue.Whilst it was out, the engine was fully serviced and the flywheel and clutch replaced. These were balanced along with the prop-shaft, which was itself fitted with new UJs. The brakes were all replaced as were the fuel lines and an up-rated radiator fitted. The engine was refitted into the refreshed engine bay and the fuel pump, metering unit and injectors set up for smooth running.Pleasingly, much of the interior was preserved, with only renewal of the carpets being necessary due to sun damage. The hood is original and in good condition as is the tonneau cover and hood bag and, quite importantly, the TR also retains its original factory hardtop (still in its original Mimosa Yellow). This is a really lovely example of Triumph's classic TR6 which benefits from the more powerful CP engine and overdrive and is undoubtedly one of the best on the market. With it's gleaming fresh paint, chrome wire wheels and smart interior, we suspect its long term owner will be looking down with a real sense of pride. You can now book a one to one appointment (up to one hour) to view this lot at our central location between 16th and 30th July.
