* PETER HOWSON OBE (SCOTTISH b 1958), LAST MAN ON EARTH oil on canvas, signed 60cm x 90cm Framed. Label verso: Flowers East Gallery, 119/205 Richmond Road, London. Note: Painted in 1989, this work is from a very important period in the artist's life. In 1987 Howson painted “The Noble Dosser” (Tate Gallery Collection). This was the period when the artists career was to take off, his portraits of down-and-outs and dark urban characters were to capture the imagination of art collectors and equally importantly; ordinary Glasgow people who had never bought art before, invested in the artist’s work in large numbers. Howson's reputation grew rapidly and so began an International career which has earned him multiple sell out shows with Flowers Gallery in London and New York. The list of celebrity collectors is considerable and still growing. The theme of life’s struggles permeates throughout the many phases of the artist's career, none more so than the figure in this painting. A figure washed up on the shores of a desolate land, alone and in despair. Like many of Howson’s works there is a glimmer hope, his dog sits loyally waiting for his master to wake and go on with life.
* FRANK TO (SCOTTISH b 1982), GHOST IN THE SHELL oil on canvas, signed verso 74.5cm x 60cm Framed. Note: Frank To was born in Glasgow and studied at the University of Huddersfield and then Duncan of Jordanstone Art College in Dundee. He lives in Glasgow and has a studio in the city. He has earned an enviable reputation for himself as a contemporary figurative painter, having already established a loyal following, including a number of high profile buyers including Star Trek legend, Sir Patrick Stewart who now owns several of Frank's paintings. In recent years he has exhibited alongside some of the greats of the Scottish and International art scene including Peter Howson and Damien Hirst. His work has also featured in numerous national art fairs and art shows including at Bath, Harrogate, London, Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh and Glasgow and is held in the collection of Dundee University. Frank To has regularly received critical acclaim even from early in his career and is one of his generation's most written about artists.
* PETER HOWSON OBE (SCOTTISH b 1958), SELF PORTRAIT oil on canvas, signed 61cm x 53cm Framed. Note: a powerful and intimate self-portrait, dated from 2001, relates closely to the central figures in two of Howson's epic large-scale pieces - The First Step and The Third Step – from around the same period: a series which chronicles the artist's struggles with addiction through a hedonistic lifestyle, prior to converting to Christianity and his subsequent recovery. The artist depicts himself cautiously glancing at the observer, vulnerable and exposed.
