*PETER HOWSON OBE "The Seventh Circle" pastel, signed 26in x 20in Note : The `Seventh Circle` is part of the structure of Dante`s Inferno. The circle is divided into three rings. All are for `the violent` and the entrance to the circle is guarded by the Minotaur. The first ring is for those "violent against their neighbours" (tyrants and murderers). These souls are plunged into a river of boiling blood: the River Phlegethon. They are watched over by the Centaurs. The second ring is for those "violent against themselves" (suicides) and the third ring is for the "violent against God and nature" (Blasphemers, Sodomites, etc).
