Captain Hanson was born 15th January 1854 in Lincoln, England. His sea service was as follows: 1869-1871 Boy on Menam, Sunderland1872-1873 Ordinary Seaman on Challenge, Liverpool1873-1873 Able Seaman on Araucania, Liverpool1873-1874 Able Seaman on Fire Queen, Liverpool1874-1875 Third Mate on Derbyshire, Liverpool1875 Third Mate on Avalanche, London24th June 1875 earned his Second Mate Certificate, Liverpool (a copy of the certificate is included with this lot).1875-1876 Second Mate on Avalanche, London1876-1878 Second Mate on Dover Castle, London22nd May 1878 gained his First Mate Certificate, London (a copy of the certificate is included with this lot).1878-1880 First Mate on Bristow, London9th August 1880 Master Certificate (a copy of the certificate is included with this lot)Master of SS Nautilus 1890-1900. The SS Nautilus was launched in 1890 having been built by J McArthur Paisley at Yard No. 60. It was a steamship of 360 gross tons with a length of 130 feet. The ship was British flagged registered at Cape Town, owned by F.J. Webster, of that city. Ownership changed in 1895 to Webster & Co. Cape Town; 1898 to Smith & Webster, Cape Town; 1899 to F.W.Smith, Cape Town. The Nautilus was wrecked on 12 March 1919 on Possession Island inward from Cape Town. Condition Report Overall the chronometer is in good condition and working. As noted in the description the mahogany case may be later. It is stylistically correct. It appears to have been repolished. The polish to the inside has a chalk grain filler which was mainly used in the Edwardian era. The external surfaces have virtually none visible. The lower pair of hinges have recently been replaced as the previous pair were broken. They could be aged as they are bright. There are two slight cracks about the star escutcheon on the lower tier. Has the lock been forced previously? The dial has some slight discolouration to its edge and very slight spotting across the surface. The movement is running. Finely made blued steel hands. The bowl has a dent in one side (see additional image). A screw from the front bowl mount pivot is a modern replacement. The brass furniture is attractively lacquered with a deep golden coloured lacquer.

See Tony Mercer, Chronometer Makers of the World, London 2004. Condition Report The chronometer is in good original condition and is working. The case has some surface marks and knocks consistent with age. The observation glass has a small crack in its top left corner. There is some residue of sticky paper? on the back inner edge of the lid and mid section. The ivory roundel is cracked on its left side, probably by the screw being over tightened. The dial silvering is good and appears to have a surface lacquer. The movement is running well with a good action, clean and well spotted. The outer surface of the bowl and gimbal ring may have been relacquered. The inside of the bowl has a deep corn coloured lacquer, which is probably original.

A brass-bound rosewood and mahogany Marine Chronometersigned Barraud, 41 Cornhill, London, No. 2038, The three-tier box with drop handles and replaced rosewood and mahogany lid, the 4in silvered dial with 56-hour up/down indication above the VI, signed and inscribed 'Maker to the Royal Navy', with subsidiary seconds below XII, blued steel hands, fusée movement with spotted plates, Earnshaw-type escapement with steel spring detent with blued steel helical spring, bi-metallic balance with tapering weights, the inside of the bowl stamped 2038, with tipsy keyThe case 18.5cm square, bowl and case are associated. The firm of chronometer makers was founded by Paul Philip Barraud (d. 1820). Condition Report As noted in the description the top lid is a relatively modern replacement. Bowl may be associated to gimbal and case as a colour differential between gimbal ring and bowl. The top panel is mahogany. The edges rosewood. The top hinges are therefore probably replaced and have been aged in colour. Scratch Mark to front of case 2684 in wood grain. Two filled screw holes to back part of centre section. Another to front right side. Brass handles are bright, some slight tarnishing. Dust fillet to right side broken. Piano hinge to lower and mid tier, replacement? Outer edge of bowl scratch marked IMPERIAL CSAV. Brass lock plate, perhaps replaced. Bottom surface looks to be varnished whilst dusty. Different knurl pattern on the two pairs of locking nuts on gimbals. Inside bowl stamped 2038. Both inner surfaces of plates numbered 2038 and with cancelled number. Movement running, well blued steel, some finger marks. Slight chip to glass on inner side to sight ring.

Usher & Cole, London. An 18K gold keyless wind full hunter pocket watch with enamel portrait possibly depicting Sultan Sayyid Hamad bin Thuwaini Al-Busaid of ZanzibarDate: London Hallmark for 1893Movement: Gilt 3/4 plate English lever, cut and compensated bi-metallic balance, engraved 'Makers to the Admiralty and the Indian Government', No.27435Dial: White, black Roman numerals, black outer minute track, gilt spade handsCase: Engraved hinged, enamel portrait probably depicting Sultan Sayyid Hamad bin Thuwaini Al-Busaid of Zanzibar to the front, enamel floral medallion to reverse, No.435Signed: Dial & movement, case stamped PW for Woodman brothersSize: 38mmFootnotes:It is believed that the sitter portrayed on this beautifully executed pocket watch is Sultan Sayyid Hamad bin Thuwaini Al-Busaid of Zanzibar (c.1857-1896). Ruling from March 1893 to August 1896, Sultan Hamad was the fifth Sultan of Zanzibar. During this period Zanzibar was a protectorate of the British Empire, a relationship that had been established just 3 years prior to Hamads rule in 1890. Hamads time in power was seen to be pro-British and in 1894 he was made a Knight Grand Commander of the illustrious Order of the Star of India. His rule was brought to an abrupt end on the 25th August 1896 where it is rumoured he was poisoned by his self-proclaimed successor to the throne, his cousin Khalid bin Barghash Al-Busaid (1874-1927). The turmoil resulting from Hamads sudden death and Khalids claim to rule led to one of the shortest conflicts in recorded history with the 40 minute long Anglo-Zanzibar war.The influence of Omani dress in Zanzibar was very strong in the 19th century whilst also incorporating East African elements. Here, Sultan Hamad is depicted with a lightly decorated blue kilemba head covering, white kanzu and a joho overcoat with gold embroidery. Established in 1861, Usher & Cole were highly successfully watch and chronometer makers who had a reputation for exceptional quality. Almost a century later in 1958, Usher & Cole joined forces with Camerer Cuss & Co of New Oxford Street. For further information on Usher & Cole see The Camerer-Cuss Book of Antique Watches, pages 283-298.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

c1898, the unsigned silver coloured dial, 48mm diameter, with applied gold coloured Roman numerals, blued spade hands, subsidiary seconds register and dot minute track, signed front loading key wind mechanical fusée movement number 83073 with engraved balance cock, the top plate additionally engraved 'Chronometer maker to the Admiralty London', under a signed and numbered brass dust cover, case, 53mm diameter with Chester hallmarks for Sterling silver, sides and verso lavishly decorated with foliate and scroll engraved decoration around a vacant escutcheon shaped cartouche within a gold coloured belt, gross weight 138.9g and presented with the winding keyFootnote: John Forrest was a clock and watchmaker based in the Midlands and was active between 1857 - 1871. Following his death, his name was used by a number of watchmakers in the Coventry area of England, almost as a trademark, and this watch is one of these examples. Forrest himself seems to have had an interesting reputation. He signed himself 'Chronometer maker to the Admiralty', however 20 years after his death there was a court case calling into question the use of this term and challenging subsequent makers who used the name "Forrest". It was alleged that he would make a new watch from time to time and send it to the Admiralty as a free sample, thereby, in Forrest's eyes, justifying his claim as a supplier. However, there is little evidence that he ever made any chronometer timepieces at all, nor is there any evidence that the Admiralty ever actually purchased any of Forrest's watches.
