Thomas Russell & Son, Liverpool, an 18ct gold open-faced keyless split-chronograph pocket watch, the white enamel dial with black Roman numerals, subsidiary seconds dial, inner minute dial and outer chronograph seconds dial with two hands operated from the case side, blued steel spade hands and signed `Thos Russell & Son, Liverpool`, the Swiss made movement having a lever escapement with a split bimetallic balance and overcoil hairspring, the backplate signed `Thos Russell & Son, Liverpool, 202018`, the case hallmarked for 18ct gold, Chester 1913, diameter: 52mm. * Thomas Russell, born 1797, died 1832, was a well-known chronometer maker who founded his clockmaking firm in the early Victorian period being maker`s to both the Queen and prince Albert.From 1862 until 1875, by which time the firm was known as Thos Russell & Son, they were working at 30-32 Slater Street, Liverpool before moving to 18, Church Street. They were both maker`s and retailers.

A rare Victorian Marine Chronometer, the 2-day movement fitted with a Hartnup balance, the silvered dial, signed `W.Shepherd Liverpool`, with roman hours and arabic minutes, and subsidiary dials for seconds and up/down till next wind, the movement fitted with an Earshaw escapement and Hartnup balance, in brass bowl and gimbal, and three tier brass bound mahogany case, vacant ivory and brass cartouche, compete with key in fitted space, dial diameter 3 1/2in. (9cms), case 7 1/4 x 7 1/4 x 7 1/2in. high (18.5 x 18.5 x 19.5cms high). N.B. William Shepherd is recorded at 13 Bath Street, Liverpool 1848-1852. John Hartnup, the designer of this handsome balance, was superintendent of the Liverpool Observatory and being acutely aware of the problems caused by middle temperature error designed his balance, circa 1847 which was constructed with the assistance of William Shepherd.
