A Gentleman's stainless steel Omega Constellation Chronometer wristwatch, Megasonic 720 Hz, case no. C228 and another wristwatch (2)

Los 100

A Victorian brass mounted mahogany cased two-day marine chronometer Richard... A Victorian brass mounted mahogany cased two-day marine chronometer Richard Hornby, Liverpool, circa 1870 The circular four pillar single chain fusee movement with Harrison's maintaining power, Earnshaw type spring detent escapement and split bimetallic balance with wedge-shaped principal compensating weights and helical balance spring, the backplate with blued steel spring set-up ratchet and securing screws for the pillars and backcock, the 3.875 inch circular silvered Roman numeral dial with subsidiary seconds dial beneath signature Rich'd Hornby, Liverpool. No. 298 and WIND DOWN/UP dial to centre, secured by a slender screw-down bezel into a lacquered brass bowl with circular winding hole shutter to underside stamped with H.S. and M.O.D. arrow device, mounted via gimbals into the brass bound mahogany wood three tier box with shaped inset brass corner caps to top tier over front with long octagonal ivory plate engraved with repeat serial number 298 , the lower angles with further brass reinforcement straps, 15.5cm (6ins) wide. Richard Hormby is recorded in Mercer, T. Mercer Chronometers, History, Maintenance and Repair as working as a watchmaker and chronometer maker at New Scotland Road from 1811-1869, with a shop at Pool Lane. Other sources note that he was the son of a watchamker born in Liverpool in June 1789 and died in November 1849. His son Gerard continued the business as Richard Hornby & Son from 1851. Admiralty records (Hydrographic Department ledger) indicate that the current lot was taken on charge as a loan on the 8th April 1944 but appears not to have been issued for use on a vessel, and was returned to the owner on the 22nd of May 1945.

An American two-day marine chronometer Hamilton Watch Company, Lancaster, P. A An American two-day marine chronometer Hamilton Watch Company, Lancaster, P. A., circa 1942/3 The circular four pillar single chain fusee nickel finish movement with Harrison's maintaining power, Earnshaw type spring detent escapement and uncut monometallic ovalising balance with cylindrical timing weights and helical balance spring, the engine-turned backplate with mainspring set-up ratchet, balance locking fork and inscribed MODEL 21, 14 JEWELS, HAMILTON WATCH CO., LANCASTER, PENN. to margin, the frontplate with conforming engine-turned decoration and stamped with serial number 2E2960 , the 4 inch circular silvered Arabic numeral dial with subsidiary seconds dial inscribed N 2960, 1941 beneath signature HAMILTON, LANCASTER, P. A., U. S. A. and DOWN/UP state-of-wind dial to centre, secured by a screw-down bezel into a lacquered brass bowl with shuttered winding hole to underside, now mounted via the original gimbals into a later mahogany two-tier box with glazed top panel, brass side handles and simple clasp to front, 19cm (7.5ins) wide excluding handles. At the outbreak of the Second World War there were no domestic makers of marine chronometers in the United States hence the U. S. Navy looked to watch manufacturers to develop timepieces that would be both suitably accurate and able to be mass produced. The Elgin and Hamilton watch companies both rose to the challenge but it was only the latter who were able to satisfactorily fulfil the brief for mass production. In addition to the model 21 chronometer Hamilton also produced a smaller version, the model 22, which was essentially a gimballed deck watch. In use the model 21 proved extremely accurate hence is considered by many as being at the pinnacle of mechanical marine timekeeping.

A George II/III gilt brass verge pocket watch movement with cylinder... A George II/III gilt brass verge pocket watch movement with cylinder escapement Thomas Mudge and William Dutton, mid 18th century The gilt full plate single fusee verge movement with four square baluster pillars pinned through the backplate, cylinder escapement, scroll-pierced stop-iron block and sprung three-arm steel balance with Tompion type regulation, the backplate with fine symmetrical foliate scroll pierced balance cock with diamond endstone and conforming engraved foot flanked by silvered regulation disc within adjacent applied gilt scroll decorated infill opposing signature Tho. Mudge, W. Dutton, London and serial number 953 , with original dust cover engraved with repeat signature and fitted with a convex white enamel Roman numeral with Arabic five minutes to outer track and steel beetle and poker hands, the pillar plate 40mm (1.5ins approx.) diameter. Thomas Mudge is an important maker who is recorced in Baillie, G. H. Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World as born in Plymouth in 1715 and was apprenticed to George Graham gaining his freedom of the Clockmakers' Company in 1736. He was elevated to Liveryman in 1738 and is thought to have mainly worked with Graham until the latter's death in 1751. Mudge subsequently set-up business alone in Fleet Street and made a watch featuring his newly invented lever escapement for Queen Charlotte in 1757. He was the first to use stones for escapement pallets and impulse pins and published the work Thoughts on the Means of Improving Watches, particularly those for use at sea in 1765. From 1771 he became increasingly involved with the continued development of the marine chronometer a pursuit with pre-occupied him until his death in 1794. William Dutton is recorded in Baillie as also apprenticed to George Graham in 1738 and gained his freedom of the Clockmakers' Company in 1746. In around 1750 the partnership with Thomas Mudge, was formed and worked from 148 Fleet Street, London, where the business was to remain through successive generations of the Dutton family. William Dutton was elevated to Liveryman in 1766 and alongside Mudge developed the lever escapement for watches in 1771; shortly after which Thomas Mudge retired to Plymouth in order to spend more time to pursue his development of a marine timekeeper. The cylinder escapement was developed in around 1695 by Thomas Tompion and further refined by George Graham in 1726. This new escapement was perhaps the first developed exclusively for watch work and, as well as being a better rate keeper, the cylinder escapement also allowed movements to be made more compact (due to the escapement operating in one plane only). However, being a form of frictional rest escapement, the cylinder escapement was prone to relatively heavy rates of wear hence was less reliable than the verge (until hardened steel escape wheels and ruby cylinders were developed later in the 18th century).
