A mid-Victorian marine chronometer, circa 1860, the two day movement with Earnshaw-type spring detent, cut bimetallic balance with circular heat compensation weights and blued steel helical balance spring, the silvered dial with subsidiary state of wind and seconds dials, Roman numerals and inscribed `Thomas Adams, Maker to HRH Prince Albert, 36 Lombard St., London` and numbered `3767`, in a brass bowl hung in gimbals, within a mahogany three-tier brass-bound case, the lid interior with green paper trade label for `D. McGregor & Co`, height approx 20cm.
A fine French engraved gilt brass centre seconds carriage clock with spring detent `chronometer` escapement and push-button repeat Bollviller, Paris, circa 1845 The gilt eight-day two train bell striking movement with underslung spring detent escapement and vertical rim monometallic balance with blued steel timing screws and helical balance spring mounted via a bridge with column turned uprights onto a large linear engine-turned platform, the backplate stamped with oval BOLLVILLER, A PARIS trademark to lower margin, the rectangular white enamel Roman numeral dial with centre seconds, blued steel Breguet style moon hands and repeat signature BOLLVILLER A PARIS in a curve below, the gilt one-piece caddy moulded foliate scroll engraved bevel-glazed case with hinged carrying handle and repeat button fitted towards the front edge of the top glass, the rear door with shuttered winding holes within a rococo-scroll engraved gilt field, on cavetto moulded skirt base with recessed rounded angles, the inner base plate stamped L. LANGE 84 to underside, 14cm (5.5ins) high excluding handle. Bolviller is recorded in Allix, Charles and Bonnert, Peter CARRIAGE CLOCKS, Their history and development as working from various addresses in Paris from circa 1830-70; Rue Saint-Avoye 1830, Rue Charlot 1840, Rue Vendome 1850-60 and Rue Beranger 1870. L. Lange is also recorded by Allix as a specialist carriage clock case maker whose stamp appears mainly on one-piece cases housing movements by Auguste, Jules and Japy amongst others. The current lot is unusual and rare in that it is fitted with a spring detent `chronometer` escapement and has centre seconds. The design of the bridge for the balance, as well as the engine turned detail to the platform, can be directly compared to an underslung pointed-tooth platform lever escapement fitted to a very similar but non centre seconds carriage clock signed by Jules, Paris, illustrated in Allix, Charles and Bonnert, Peter CARRIAGE CLOCKS, Their history and development pages 74-5 (figs II/50 and II/51). Indeed these similarities add weight to the suggestion made by Allix that these clocks originated from the same manufacturing process/workshop.
An Edwardian Regency style inlaid mahogany aneroid wheel barometer Kelvin and James White Limited and Hutton, London, early 20th century The 8 inch circular silvered register signed KELVIN & J`AS WHITE LTD & HUTTON, 11 BILLITER S`T, LONDON to centre within scale calibrated in barometric inches and with the usual observations set beneath arched alcohol tube Fahrenheit thermometer flanked by oval marquetry conch shell decoration with radial fan roundel to the open triangular pediment and to the rounded base within ebony and box chevron border to case, 96cm (37.75ins) high. Kelvin,White and Hutton were chronometer and nautical instrument makers working both from 11 Billiter Street, London and 16, 18 and 20 Cambridge Street Glasgow from the late 19th century up to around 1925.
A mahogany cased two-day marine chronometer Heath and Company, London, circa 1917 The circular four pillar single chain fusee movement made by Thomas Mercer of St, Albans with Harrison`s maintaining power, Earnshaw type spring detent escapement and split bimetallic balance with cylindrical compensating weights and helical palladium alloy balance spring, the backplate with spring set-up ratchet and blued-steel pillar and backcock securing screws, the reverse of the dial mounting plate stamped 9856, the 4 inch circular silvered Roman numeral dial with subsidiary seconds dial inscribed ÒHEZZANITHÓ 27717-C 24 beneath HEATH & Co. LTD., New Eltham, LONDON and WIND DOWN/UP dial to centre, secured by a screw-down bezel into a lacquered brass bowl with repeat 9856 serial number to interior and with circular winding hole shutter to underside, mounted via gimbals into a mahogany three tier box centred with shaped brass name plaque to the top tier above front applied with vacant rectangular ivorine trade plate, the sides with recessed lacquered brass carrying handles, 18cm (7ins) wide. The firm of Heath and Company was founded in 1845 by George Heath in Erith, Kent. He specialised in supplying instruments to the maritime trade as was succeeded by his sons Frederick Thomas and George William on his death in 1872. By 1900 the firm had expanded to become one of the most prolific manufacturers of nautical and surveying instruments and had adopted the `Hezzanith` trade name; in 1926 the business was amalgamated with W.F. Stanley of London. The movement of the current lot is typical of the work of Thomas Mercer of St. Albans hence was probably supplied to Heath and Company for retail. The movement serial number `9856` suggests a date of circa 1917 (according to Mercer`s numbering).
A mahogany cased two-day marine chronometer Friederich Leutert, Adendorf, mid 20th century The circular four pillar frosted gilt single chain reverse fusee movement with Harrison`s maintaining power, Earnshaw type spring detent escapement and Guillaume type `integral` balance with cylindrical compensating weights and helical balance spring, the backplate with spring set-up ratchet, the 3.75 inch circular silvered Arabic numeral dial with subsidiary seconds dial inscribed 019 beneath signature Friederich Leutert and state of wind dial annotated Ab/Auf to centre, secured by a screw-down bezel into a lacquered brass bowl mounted via gimbals into a mahogany two tier box with bevel-glazed panel to lid above front applied with rectangular trade plate with repeat serial number, the sides with lacquered brass carrying handles, 18cm (7ins) wide. Friederich Leutert set up business as instrument maker to the oil and gas industries as well as maker of timepieces and chronometers in 1941. His son Hartwig joined the business in 1971 and instrumented the growth of the firm into the major supplier of equipment to the maritime and energy trade that it is today.
A mahogany cased two-day marine chronometer Kelvin, White & Hutton, London, early 20th century The circular four pillar chain fusee movement probably supplied by A. Johannsen and Company with Harrison`s maintaining power, Earnshaw type spring detent escapement and split bimetallic balance with cylindrical compensating weights and helical palladium balance spring, the spotted backplate with spring set-up ratchet and blued-steel pillar and backcock securing screws, the reverse of the frontplate stamped 10771, the 4 inch circular silvered Arabic numeral dial with subsidiary seconds dial engraved with M.O.D. arrow device and numbered 5469 beneath signature Kelvin, White & Hutton, 11 Billiter St., London and state of wind dial annotated DOWN/UP to centre, secured by a screw-down bezel into a lacquered brass bowl with repeat number 10771 to inside and shuttered winding hole to rear, mounted via gimbals into a mahogany two tier box with bevel-glazed panel to lid above front applied with rectangular ivorine trade plate with repeat serial number, the sides with lacquered brass carrying handles, 18cm (7ins) wide. Kelvin,White and Hutton were chronometer and nautical instrument makers working both from 11 Billiter Street, London and 16, 18 and 20 Cambridge Street Glasgow from the late 19th century up to around 1925. A repair label for Motion Smith and Son, Singapore, dated February 1940 is pasted to the inside of the upper tier of the current lot. Records held at the Royal Observatory, Greenwich indicate that the current lot was onboard H.M.S. Bulan prior to 25th July 1943. The ss Bulan was a merchant ship built for P&O`s Malayan feeder services in 1924 and taken up by the Royal Navy for the Malayan Auxilliary Fleet in September 1939. She was at Singapore in December 1941 when the Japanese attacked and rescued survivors from the ss Pina which was sunk by dive bombers as well as a Hurricane pilot who crash-landed into the sea. On the 11th February 1942 she left Singapore with refugees bound for Batavia, although she was bombed enroute in the Banka Strait, and stopped to take onboard survivors from the stricken Dutch fuel tankers Manvantarra and Merula, she safely arrived in Batavia on 15th February; the same day that Singapore fell to the Japanese. After the war the current lot was issued (28th May 1948) to the recently commissioned C class destroyer HMS Crispin before returning to Rosyth on the 5th October 1949. The chronometer was eventually taken off charge 29th June 1970.
A brass inlaid coromandel cased two-day marine chronometer George and Thomas Davison, Newcastle-on-Tyne, circa 1870 The circular four pillar single chain fusee movement with Harrison`s maintaining power, Earnshaw type spring detent escapement and split bimetallic balance with cylindrical compensating weights, Poole type middle temperature error compensation and helical balance spring, the spotted backplate with spring set-up ratchet and blued-steel pillar and backcock securing screws, the reverse of the dial bezel plate stamped 1811, the 4 inch circular silvered Roman numeral dial with subsidiary seconds dial inscribed AUXILIARY COMPENSATION beneath signature G & T DAVISON, MAKERS TO THE ADMIRALTY, Newcastle on Tyne, No. 1811 and WIND DOWN/UP dial to centre, secured by a screw-down bezel into a lacquered brass bowl with conforming serial number to interior and with engraved crowned M device for the Imperial German Navy to the circular winding hole shutter to underside, mounted via gimbals into a fine brass bound coromandel wood three tier box centred with shield shaped brass name plaque engraved with monogram KF to the double line-bordered lid above conforming front applied with rectangular trade plate, the sides with recessed lacquered brass carrying handles, the interior of the top tier lined with pleated blue velvet, 18cm (7ins) wide. George and Thomas Davison are recorded in Mercer, Tony Chronometer Makers of the World as working from Side Street, Newcastle-on-Tyne 1865-87 and 80 Grey Street 1877-86. Records held at the Royal Observatory, Greenwich indicate that the current lot was one of three supplied direct to the Imperial German Navy in 1871 (the same year that the German Empire was created under Kaiser Wilhelm I) at a cost of around £17. The crowned `M` device engraved to the winding hole shutter (applied to the underside of the bowl) confirms its use by the `Kaiserliche Marine`. It is perhaps appropriate to speculate that the shield cartouche engraved with the monogram `KF`, applied to the lid, could have been added in honour of Kaiser Frederick III who succeeded as Emperor in 1888; only to abdicate 99 days later due to terminal illness. Despite Frederick`s Liberal tendencies a class of small battleship was named after him with the first SMS Kaiser Frederick III being laid down in 1895.
A brass bound mahogany cased two-day marine chronometer Clement Harris, London, circa 1835 The circular four pillar single chain fusee movement with Harrison`s maintaining power, Earnshaw type spring detent escapement and split bimetallic balance with cylindrical compensating weights and helical balance spring, the spotted backplate with spring set-up ratchet and blued-steel pillar and backcock securing screws, the 4 inch circular silvered Roman numeral dial with subsidiary seconds dial inscribed J.M. Mullick beneath signature C. Harris, Cornhill, London, 796 and WIND/UP dial to centre, with unusual fine gilt fleur-de-lys hands and secured by a screw-down bezel into a lacquered brass bowl with winding square to underside, mounted via gimbals into a mahogany three tier box centred with shield-shaped brass name plaque to the top tier above front now applied with vacant rectangular ivory plate, the sides with recessed lacquered brass carrying handles, the angles inset with brass reinforcement straps, 18cm (7ins) wide. Clement Harris is recorded in Mercer, Tony Chronometer Makers of the World as working from 76 Cornhill 1822-42. He was apprenticed to George Margetts and is thought to have gone into partnership with James Hatton (after Margetts death) to form the firm of Hatton and Harris who are recorded in Baillie, G.H. Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World as working from 1816-26.
A mahogany cased two-day marine chronometer Victor Kullberg, London, late 19th century The circular four pillar single chain reverse fusee movement with Harrison`s maintaining power, Earnshaw type spring detent escapement and split bimetallic balance with cylindrical compensating weights and helical palladium balance spring, the spotted backplate with spring set-up ratchet and blued-steel pillar and backcock securing screws, the reverse of the frontplate stamped 6859, now with 3.75 inch circular silvered Roman numeral dial with subsidiary seconds dial bearing etched number 2632 beneath VICTOR KULLBERG Maker to the Admiralty, THE INDIAN AND ITALIAN GOVERNMENTS, 105 Liverpool Rd., London N. and WIND DOWN/UP dial to centre, secured by a screw-down bezel into a lacquered brass bowl with repeat 6859 serial number to interior and with circular winding hole shutter to underside, mounted via gimbals into a mahogany three tier box centred with shaped brass name plaque to the replaced top tier above front now applied with circular ivory trade plate numbered 2632, the sides with recessed lacquered brass carrying handles, 18cm (7ins) wide. Victor Kullberg is recorded in Mercer, Tony Chronometer Makers of the World as born in Sweden 1824, he was apparently drawn to London by the Great Exhibition of 1851 and subsequently set up business at 105 Liverpool N1 (by 1870). Kullberg developed several balances with middle error temperature compensation and became one of the finest makers of marine chronometers of the period; he died in 1890 leaving the business to be continued by George and Peter Wannerstrom.
A Russian Soviet period brass bound stained wood cased two-day marine chronometer First Moscow Watch Factory, Kirov, model MX-6, third quarter of the 20th century The circular four pillar engine turned gilt single chain reverse fusee movement with Harrison`s maintaining power, Earnshaw type spring detent escapement and Guillaume type split bimetallic `integral` balance with cylindrical compensating weights and palladium alloy helical balance spring, the backplate with spring set-up ratchet and stamped pentagonal trademark above serial number N-16398, the 3.75 inch circular silvered Arabic numeral dial with subsidiary seconds dial inscribed with repeat serial number beneath signature in Cyrillic and state of wind dial to centre, secured by a screw-down bezel into a lacquered brass bowl mounted via gimbals into a stained wood three tier box with shaped brass corner caps to top tier above front applied with rectangular brass trade plate with number 8916-77, the sides with lacquered brass carrying handles and inset brass reinforcement straps to angles, 18cm (7ins) wide; with protective tailored red velvet bag and outer guard box with extended shaped base panel, 33cm (13ins) wide. The First State Watch Factory was founded in 1930 under the instructions of Stalin using machinery imported from the then defunct Ansonia Clock Company of Brooklyn and the Dueber-Hampden Watch Factory of Canton, Ohio, U.S.A. In 1935 the factory was named after the murdered Soviet official Sergei Kirov. After a short period of evacuation, due to the threat on Moscow by Germany, the factory was re-established in 1941 with the name revised to `First Moscow Watch Factory, Kirov`. From 1952 the factory produced marine chronometers (based on the A. Lange and Son, Glashutte M4568 chronometer in use during WWII) of which the current lot is a good example. In 1961 the factory`s products were branded Poljot (flight) in honour of Yuri Gagarin succeeding as the first man in space on 2nd April of that year. The manufacturing of watches still continues on the same site today - mainly producing watches for the Volmax brand.

Edward John Dent was a talented horologist who at the age of 17 transferred his apprenticeship from the trade of tallow chandler to watchmaking under the charge of Edward Gaudin in 1807. By 1814 he was becoming well known as a watch and clockmaker receiving commissions from the Admiralty for a `Standard Astronomical Clock` and pocket chronometers for the Colonial Office Africa Expedition. In 1830 Dent went into partnership with the renowned watch and chronometer maker John Roger Arnold which continued until 1840 when he left and set up business alone as E.J. Dent at 82 Strand, London, primarily making marine chronometers, watches and precision clocks. In 1852 Edward Dent successfully tendered to make the Great Clock to be housed in St. Stephens Tower at the New Palace of Westminster. The clock was completed in 1859, apparently at financial loss to the firm, however it ensured that the Dent name became a household name synonymous with fine clockmaking. After his death in 1853 the firm was continued by his successors and was still trading well into the latter half of the 20th century.
An early Victorian mahogany library timepiece with passing strike John Carter, London, mid 19th century The four pillar single fusee movement with anchor escapement, Vulliamy style wide jaw pendulum suspension and passing strike on a bell mounted to the rear, the backplate with pendulum holdfast bracket and signed John Carter, 61 Cornhill, LONDON, the 5 inch circular silvered Roman numeral dial with repeat signature to centre and blued steel moon hands within cast brass bevel-glazed bezel, the rectangular plinth form case with tablet upstand and ogee moulded cornice above flame figured front and sides, on tall moulded skirt base with squab feet, 30cm (12ins) high. John Carter is recorded in Baillie, G.H. Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World as apprenticed in 1817 and gaining his freedom of the Clockmakers` Company in 1829. He was an accomplished chronometer maker who won numerous awards at the 1838 chronometer trials; by 1840 he had set up business at 61 Cornhill. In 1855 Carter held the position of Jurer at the Imperial Exhibition, Paris and was appointed Master of Worshipful Company of Clockmakers three times (in 1856, 59 and 64). As well as being a highly skilled horologist John Carter was also notable as a civic activist - perhaps due to his experience as a child as he was orphaned at an early age. His charitable nature lead him to be elected Lord Mayor in 1859, he died in 1878.
