His citation in the London Gazette read as follows: 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty During the successful day light raid he outflanked and rushed an enemy bombing post, killing and capturing the garrison, and by his dash and courage setting a fine example to his men. The success of the enterprise was very materially added to the success of the whole raid'.
