A rare eight day mantel chronometer, silvered dial signed Venner Time Switches Ltd and numbered 598 within the up/down dial, subsidiary seconds at 12 o`clock with small aperture revealing a contact, stop lever at 1 o`clock, the rectangular plated movement with substantial ringed pillars, the large horizontal platform with spring detent escapement countersunk into the plates, in an amboyna veneered case with brass stringing, the back with two electrical connections, 11.5in (29cm) h. Venner would have ordered this chronometer from Mercers and Vaudrey Mercer records it as made in 1925.

The business was continued by George Frodsham. * William Mansell & William Mansell are recorded as working at 26, Spencer Street, Northampton Square, London from 1830.

In the early 20th century he made the world’s smallest watch for the Sultan of Morocco and in 1904 was made a Chevalier of the Legion of Honour by the French Government having premises in Paris at 16, Rue d’Angers. A distinguished horologist & chronometer maker he won many awards and wrote a number of important treatise.
