A TWO-DAY MARINE CHRONOMETER BY JOSEPH SEWELL FOR THE HALL LINE, CIRCA 1900. with 4in. silvered dial signed JOSEPH SEWELL / 61 So.Castle St. LIVERPOOL / Maker to the Admiralty and further engraved on securing bezel HALL LINE No. 97, numbered 5033 in up-down dial, subsidiary seconds dial cut away to reveal thirty-second electrical impulse contact, gold hour and minute hands, Earnshaw escapement with bi-metallic balance with blued steel spring, numbered on the movement and bowl '6099', mounted within in a gimballed bowl with locking arm in a two-tier mahogany box with electric slave dial contacts, Greek testing label from 1977 and retail label for Castle & Co., Hull. 7in. (18cm.) square approximately. Robert Alexander founded the Sun Shipping Co., a passenger/cargo service running out of Liverpool in 1868. The ships were all named _____HALL, thus, the company became known as the 'Hall Line'. In 1899 the name was officially changed to Hall Line Ltd. and in 1901 the company was purchased by John Ellerman operating as part of the Ellerman Group as Ellerman's Hall Line. This chronometer must therefore date from the brief period the Company was running independently between 1899 and 1901.

No. 317, the spotted brass chain movement with diamond endstone to a spring detent escapement, the signed 3.5 inch silvered dial with subsidiaries for state of wind and running seconds, in a gimballed bowl with safety key in a three-tiered brass bound mahogany box with ivory nameplate to the front and rebated brass handles to the sides, paper label inside lid for Frodsham & Keen, Liverpool, 'Cleaned Augt 1889', within the original outer mahogany case with baize lining and leather strap, the box 17.5cm. (7in.) square, the outer case 23.5cm. (9.25in.) square.

A William IV mahogany bracket clock with original wall bracket Richard Widenham, London, circa 1830. The five -pillar twin fusee bell-striking movement with keyhole shaped plates, anchor escapement and signed Widenham, London to backplate, the 8 inch circular engraved brass Roman numeral dial (formerly silvered) signed Widenham, 13 Lombard St., London to centre and with Strike/Silent switch at 12 o’clock, the drum-head case with scroll moulding to apron above recessed panel to the plinth base with moulded skirt, the wall bracket with scroll support, the clock 45cm high, 63cm high including the bracket. Richard Widenham was a respected chronometer maker, winning an award at the chronometer trials held at the Royal Observatory in 1825. He was known to be working from his Lombard Street address by 1835 and began trading as Widenham and Adams in 1840.
A fine George III mahogany eight-day longcase clock John Grant, London, circa 1790. The five-pillar rack and bell striking movement with knurled calibrated rating nut and large lenticular bob to the steel rod pendulum supported from the substantial back-cock, the 12 inch single-sheet silvered brass Roman numeral break-arch dial with subsidiary seconds and calendar dials and signed GRANT Fleet Street, LONDON No. 365 to centre, with Arabic five minutes and plain spandrels beneath arch with STRIKE/SILENT dial, the break-arch case with brass stop-fluted pilasters to hood above break-arch trunk door flanked by conforming brass-mounted fluted quarter columns to angles, on raised shaped panel fronted plinth base with double skirt incorporating shaped apron and bracket feet, 222cm high. John Grant is recorded as working in Fleet Street 1786-1810. He was apprenticed to and later went into partnership with his uncle the renowned clock and chronometer maker Alexander Cumming who, along with other eminent makers such as Thomas Mudge, was appointed by the board of longitude to assess Harrison’s marine timekeepers.

A Fine Two Day Marine Chronometer, signed Victor Kullberg, Maker to the Admiralty, 105 Liverpool Rd, London N, No.3972, 1878, the three-tier variegated ebony case with concealed carrying handles, double line brass stringing to the borders, brass escutcheons to the keyhole and push release for the lid, the lid with a blank brass shield, the front with ivory plaque engraved "Victor Kullberg, Two Days Admiralty arrow 19 I 20 3972", 4-inch silvered dial with Roman numerals, blued steel minute and hour hands, subsidiary dials for up/down indication and seconds, dial signed "Victor Kullberg, Maker to the Admiralty, The Indian & Italian Governments, 105 Liverpool Rd, London N" and within the subsidiary seconds dial inscribed "Six Gold Medals Awarded, Diploma of Honor, Sole & Highest Award, Vienna, No.3972 and Admiralty arrow I", in addition the dial bears two plaques inscribed "To H M The King of Norway and Sweden" and "Prize Medal Award 1860 1862 1864", single fusee movement numbered "3972 and with Admiralty arrow", "Earnshaw's" spring detent escapement, "Harrison's" maintaining power, temperature compensation balance with weights and timing screws, free-sprung steel helical hairspring, diamond endstone, movement contained within a gimbal, gimbal numbered "3972", 18.5cm by 18cm by 18cm see illustration Sold with a copy typescript of the "Ledger of Receipt and Issues of Chronometers", recording the number "3972", date of purchase from Kullberg in 1881, and all the different ports the chronometer went to such as Portsmouth, Sydney and Plymouth between 1881-1920. In 1920 the copy typescript records the chronometer being sold to the Indian Office, hence the date "1920" and marked "I" for (India) on the front ivory plaque. Our thanks to the National Maritime Museum for their kind assistance with these notes. Victor Kullberg is recorded as making some of the finest chronometers and was one of the most successful horologists of the 19th century, He was born in Visby, Sweden in 1824 and worked for LU Jurgensen in Copenhagen. In 1851 he moved to London. He gained many top awards around the world, including nine gold medals with diplomas of honour. Kullberg came top of the Greenwich trials twelve times and was granted the Cross of the Legion of Honour award in 1889. He died in 1890.
