BULOVA MARINE NAVIGATOR MARK II BOXED MARINE CHRONOMETER This 1967 Bulova Accutron Marine Navigator Mark II was the first model to be sold to the public that was originally developed as " Bulova Accutron Model TE-18 Experimental Navigation Timepiece in 1966". the mechanism has three interconnected Accutron 214H Chronometric micro-power plants that are offset 120 degrees from each other as the timekeeping standard for this ship's chronometer. It has a large battery housing that screws onto the case back in place of the battery hatch cover and a large knurled handle that is pull outwards for activating the hacking mechanism and if turned for setting the time of day, all housed in a chronometer style box 12cm high, 12cm wideThe clock is in good working condition. Hands adjusts correctly, the box is simulated wood, probably some kind of vinyl, the veneer to the back of the bay has sprung open and would easily be glued back down, no other damage. We can not guarantee the movement.

The silvered dial is original and is lightly scratched and pitted, the movement is complete and the escapement has a good strong action. We have uploaded extra images of the movement and inside the case. The detent is intact.

There's a very small line on the surface of the dial in the right top corner but it's not scratched, the case is also in very good condition with no damage, there are some fingernail marks to the back of the case around the hand setting knob consistant with age. No damage to the glass panels.

Marine interest: A 19th century Parkinson & Frodsham chronometer deck watch, comprising a signed/numbered 421 silvered dial, numeral hour indices, subsidiary dial at 6, case approx 72mm, to a wooden case, the case No 421 two day chronometer. Notes: according to official contemporary accounts from Parkinson & Frodsham, we can ascertain an approximate date of manufacture as being circa 1821. Their records confirm that serial number 420 was allocated to a pair of silver pair cases (hallmarked for 1821), with serial number 422 allocated to another pair of silver pair cases (also hallmarked for 1821). Records from the Bond Papers of William Bond & Son of Boston, USA (Harvard Library Collection) state that the chronometer was ‘cleaned and adjusted for a Captain Webster, on 22nd October 1834. Captain Webster would relate to John Adams Webster, who was a Third Lieutenant in the United States Navy. Captain Webster distinguished himself at the Battle of Fort McHenry in Baltimore, during the August 1814 engagement against the British. By 1816 he’d been appointed as Sailing Master in the U.S. Navy by President James Madison, and in 1819 as Captain in the U.S. Revenue Service (by President Monroe). Further appointments followed through to the mid 1830’s. Numerous pages of research relating to Captain Webster’s career, Parkinson & Frodsham, and other interesting pieces of research. A George III mahogany longcase clockc.1775, by John Holmes of London, the hood with a sphere finial above a break-arch moulding, with a glazed door flanked by canted front edges and glazed side panels, the flame-veneered arched door above a panelled base and stepped plinth, the 12-inch silvered dial set with Roman numerals and centrally inscribed 'Holmes, London', with a strike/ silent function, a subsidiary seconds dial and a calendar aperture, the twin-train movement with five knopped pillars, maintaining power, anchor escapement and offset pivoted crutch, the wooden rod 'Ludlam' pendulum suspended from a substantial bridge on the backplate, with a massive gilt-painted lead disc-shaped bob, above a calibrated brass sphere for rating, 50cm wide26cm deep226cm highJohn Holmes is recorded as having worked from 156 Strand in London between 1761 and 1802. Holmes was regarded as one of the finest clockmakers of his time and F J Britten comments 'he seems to have been one among the leading mechanicians and when the turret clock at Greenwich Hospital was destroyed by fire in 1779, he was given the order for a new one. The Wetherfield Collection contains two long mahogany case clocks of his manufacture, one a particularly choice example of Chippendale dating from about 1770'.For an almost identical example, see Christie's, 'Important Clocks and Marine Chronometers', 20 February 2008, lot 99.
