Circa 1260-1300 AD. A substantial bronze weight for use with a steelyard balance with lead core, spherical in form with pierced flange for suspension above and hatched band to the shoulder; three heater shields with raised heraldic arms spaced equally around comprising: three lions passant gardant (royal arms of Kings Edward I to III of England 1272-1377 AD); a lion rampant (arms of Richard, or his son Edmund, Earls of Cornwall, 1209-1272 and 1249-1300 AD respectively); a spread eagle with two heads and trident tail (arms of the Hansa merchants of the Hanseatic League, 13th-17th century AD"). Cf. Saunders, Peter and Eleanor, Salisbury & South Wiltshire Museum Medieval Catalogue, Part 1, SSWM, 1991, p.48, item 1, for an example displaying the same heraldry; cf. Ward Perkins, J. B., Medieval Catalogue, London Museum Catalogues 7, 1940, p.173, item A2487, pl.XXXVIII, 2, for another example. 1.5 kg, 72mm (3"). Found in a potato field in Suffolk, UK, in 1969; seen at Crathes Castle’s BBC Antiques Road Show. These heraldic steelyard weights were made under the official sanction of Richard (son of King Henry III) or Edmund, Dukes of Cornwall on behalf of the King; Edmund died in 1300 AD and such weights were banned in 1350 so that this example would most likely to be of the period 1260-1300 AD; the Hanseatic League was created in Germany to protect the interests and privileges of merchants in the medieval period, starting in Europe and with influence spreading to England from the 13th century. [A video of this item is available to view on TimeLine Auctions website.] Very fine condition. Extremely rare, especially in this exceptionally fine condition.

Ex private American collection, Roma Numismatics XIV, 21 September 2017, lot 373 (hammer: £3,300). Some scholars suggest Antimachos was a member of the Euthydemid dynasty and thus possibly a son of Euthydemos and brother of Demetrios. Other historians disagree however, and propose him as being independent of Euthydemid authority, probably a scion of some relation to the Diodotid dynasty. Antimachos was either defeated during his resistance to the usurper Eukratides, or his main territory was absorbed by the latter upon his death.

Roman gladiator Retiarius trident, 1st-3rd century AD A bronze trident with three lines, the central line slender and long, those to the outside being shorter and wider. To the base of the lines a openwork roundel with tubular socket below. For a discussion on gladiators in the Roman Empire, see: Kohne, E. and Ewigleben, C. (eds) Gladiators and Caesars: The Power of Spectacle in Ancient Rome, London, 2000. The Retiarius was one of the first types of gladiator to be developed for the games. The equipment was clearly associated with the sea and out of all the gladiators, the Retiarius had the least body armour. The name literally means 'net fighter' due to the weighted net that formed part of his equipment; from the few depictions that show the net this seems to have been a round, wide meshed throwing net called a iaculum, with a diameter of three meters. The only piece of body armour that the Retiarius seems to have worn was a manica, or arm guard, on the left arm, which had a tall shoulder guard known as a galerus. He was mostly naked except for a subligaculum loin cloth and gaiters. The three pronged trident was known as a fuscina, and was generally about the height of a man, and was the main weapon for the Retiarius. After losing his net he would hold the trident in both hands; the handle could parry blows, as in fighting with staves, and he could strike with either side of it. The prongs of the trident could also be used to parry blows or to exert a levering effect on the other gladiator's sword or the edges of his shield and helmet. The Retiarius was the most lightly armoured though he had to avoid close combat at the distance usual for a sword-fight, for here he was hopelessly inferior to his heavily armed opponent. Size: 36cm. Provenance: Ex. Switzerland Collection, formed over the last decade.Roman gladiator Retiarius trident, 1st-3rd century AD
