He entered the Royal Navy as a Cadet aboard the Training Ship Britannia on 11 March 1862. On passing out of Britannia he was awarded a 1st Class Certificate and gained 12 months sea time. On promotion to Midshipman on 20 June 1863, he was appointed to Phoebe and loaned for short periods of training to the following ships: Victory, August 1863; Orontes, Trident, Queen, and Marlborough, September 1863, and Trident, October 1863. He returned to Phoebe in October 1863 and remained in this vessel for nearly three years. He served next aboard Lord Clyde, June 1866 and during his service in this vessel he served short periods of instruction aboard Royal Adelaide, July 1866, and Victory, August 1866, returning to the Lord Clyde in June 1867. Whilst in the latter vessel he was promoted to Sub Lieutenant on 18 December 1867, having obtained a 1st Class Certificate in Seamanship and 3rd Class Certificates in Gunnery and Navigation. He was next appointed to Northumberland in August 1868, and Narcissus, May 1870; in the latter ship he was promoted to Lieutenant on 7 February 1872. He then joined Cambridge in May 1873 for a Short Gunnery Course and in June 1873 he was then lent to Indus for the visit of the Shah of Persia. In September 1873 he joined the troopship Himalaya and in this vessel he took part in the Ashantee War 1873-74, receiving the medal without clasp. Next appointed to the Liffey in April 1878 and then Shah in November 1878; in the latter vessel he saw service in the Zulu War and was awarded the medal without clasp. On returning to England in November 1879 he was appointed to the Duke of Wellington for service as Transport Officer afloat aboard the S.S. Ontario. He next served in Agincourt, August 1880, and was present in this vessel in Egyptian waters during 1882 and received the Egyptian War medal without clasp. He was highly Commended by Rear Admiral A. Wilson 'For the manner in which he commanded Agincourt for two months when the Commanding Officer was away sick, he had entire charge of the ship during a short evolutionary cruise'. On leaving Agincourt he took command of the gunboat Cygnet in May 1884 and saw service at Suakin in the Red Sea. He was specially promoted to Commander on 17 August 1885, and mentioned in Commodore R. H. Molyneux's Despatch published in the London Gazette of 23 June 1885. 'The Cygnet was moored during the busiest time at the entrance of the harbour to enforce obedience to the port regulations framed for the occasion to prevent confusion or accident, a duty which was performed by Lieutenant Alexander M. Gardiner, commanding that ship with much tact and judgement'. His services were recognised by the award of the clasp 'Suakin 1885' which he added to his previously earned no clasp, dated medal. On his return to England in October 1885 he joined Duke of Wellington, followed by Cyclops in July 1889, and was then appointed to the command of Kingfisher. Whilst in the latter vessel attached to the East Indies Squadron, he was landed in October 1890 as part of the Naval Brigade sent to punish the Sultan of Witu who had earlier murdered a party of Europeans. He was mentioned in Vice Admiral Fremantle's Despatch, London Gazette 6 January 1891: 'In Command of an Infantry Brigade, he showed himself able and efficient'. Being already in possession of the Ashantee Medal he received only the clasp 'Witu 1890', one of only ten officers to receive additional clasps to the Ashantee Medal. His next appointment was to the command of the gunboat Mistletoe, January 1892, and to the Raven in July 1894. On 8 January 1896, he retired at his own request with the rank of Captain having served for 34 years. He died 21 June 1927, aged 78, his Obituary appearing in The Times, 25 June 1927. Sold with copied record of service and other research.

At the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2005, Maserati introduced two different trim levels for the Quattroporte, the Executive GT and Sport GT.The Quattroporte Sport GT variant offered several performance upgrades: a re-configured transmission providing faster gearshifts and a firmer Skyhook suspension system; courtesy of new software calibrations, seven-spoke 20-inch wheels with low-profile tyres, cross-drilled brake rotors, and braided brake lines. Model-specific exterior trim included dark mesh front and side grilles and red accents to the Trident badges, as on vintage racing Maserati models. Inside, there were aluminium pedals, a sport steering wheel and carbon fibre in place of the standard wood inserts.A new 6-speed ZF-supplied automatic transmission was presented at the Detroit Motor Show in January 2007, with the first cars delivered right after the launch, marketed as Maserati Quattroporte Automatica. This particular four owner car is finished in the desirable colour combination of Nero Carbonio with Nero interior and most importantly has the far more desirable option of the six speed ZF automatic gearbox. Supplied new by Graypaul Edinburgh, the car has a mix of main dealer and specialist service history and is complete with original handbooks, service book , two keys, V5c and Mot until April 2025.The epitome of Italian style, this luxury sports saloon is offered with no reserve and represents fabulous value for money. The Honda S2000 was manufactured from 1999 until 2009, first shown as a concept car called the SSM at the Tokyo Motor Show in 1995, the production version was launched on April 15, 1999 to celebrate the company's 50th anniversary. The S2000 is named for its engine displacement of two litres, while "S" stood for "sports" carrying on in the tradition of the S500, S600, and S800 roadsters of the 1960s. Several revisions were made throughout the car's production life, including changes to the engine, gearbox, suspension, interior and exterior with production ceased on August 19, 2009. The Honda S2000 was notable for its exceptional specific power output of about 124 hp per litre, or about two horsepower per cubic inch, the highest of any mass production, naturally aspirated engined car at the time. The S2000 has since become a legitimate modern classic car, having seen a significant appreciation in price for valued examples in good condition. In the JDM community and the car community as a whole, the most sought-after models are special edition productions such as the CR (Club Racer) in the USA market while the standard AP1 and AP2 models have achieved collectible status as well. This AP2 example was purchased by our vendor as a retirement gift on the 24th June 2009, the original order form tells us it was specified with full body cover and front and rear parking sensors and although with a list price of £27,050 and due to being one of the last S2000’s to be sold, it was discounted to a final price of £21,655. Presented in New Formula Red with Black leather and soft top, this example has been maintained by Trident Honda in Ottershaw, the supplying dealer, with four service stamps until 2014; since then our vendor driving less frequently, has had a local mechanic fulfil both a brake fluid service and changed the coolant. A ULEZ compliant modern classic this has predominantly remained covered when not driven however the body colour plastics have bleached in the sun and could do with a smart colour repair typical of this red but a small price to pay to have such a low mileage, low owner example. Offered with a full book pack, two keys and MoT test certificate until September. The S200 is one of the best drivers cars of the early 2000’s, if you have not driven the VTEC engine, you should and this example has all the markings of a future modern classic. April 23d. 1918’ at base; the reverse inscribed ‘To six very gallant Gentlemen: Lt. R. D. Sandford, V.C., R.N., Lt. J. Howell-Price, D.S.O., D.S.C., R.N.R., Sto. H. C. Bendall, C.G.M., Ldg. Sea. W. G. Cleaver, C.G.M., D.S.M., Petty Officer W. Harner, C.G.M., E.R.A. A. G. Roxburgh, C.G.M. 1918-1927’, in Fisch, Brussels, card box of issue, good very fine £100-£140 --- Importation Duty This lot is subject to importation duty of 5% on the hammer price unless exported outside the UK --- --- London Gazette 23 July 1918: Honours for Services in the Operations against Zeebrugge and Ostend on the night of the 22nd-23rd April 1918: V.C.: Lieutenant Richard Douglas Sandford, R.N. ‘For most conspicuous gallantry. This officer was in command of submarine C.3, and most skilfully placed that vessel in between the piles of the viaduct before lighting her fuse and abandoning her. He eagerly undertook this hazardous enterprise, although well aware (as were all his crew) that if the means of rescue failed and he or any of his crew were in the water at the moment of the explosion, they would be killed outright by the force of such explosion. Yet Lieutenant Sandford disdained to use the gyro steering, which would have enabled him and his crew to abandon the submarine at a safe distance, and preferred to make sure, as far as was humanly possible, of the accomplishment of his duty.’ D.S.O.: Lieutenant John Howell-Price, D.S.C., R.N.R. ‘His assistance in placing Submarine C.3 between the piles of the viaduct before the fuse was lighted and she was abandoned was invaluable. His behaviour in a position of extreme danger was exemplary.’ C.G.M.: Stoker 1st Class Henry Cullis Bendall; Petty Officer Waler Harner; Leading Seaman William Gladstone Cleaver; and Engine Room Artificer 3rd Class Allan Gordon Roxburgh: ‘These four ratings were members of the crew of the Submarine C.3, which was skilfully placed between the piles of the Zeebrugge mole viaduct and there blown up, the fuse being lighted before the submarine was abandoned. They volunteered for and, under the command of an officer, eagerly undertook this hazardous enterprise, although they were well aware that if the means of rescue failed, and that if any of them were in the water at the time of the explosion, they would be killed outright.’ The above plaque commemorated the exploits of the crew of the submarine C.3 during the attack on the heavily fortified Mole at Zeebrugge, Belgium, on St. George’s Day, 23 April 1918. C.3’s role was to destroy the railway viaduct connecting the Mole with the main land installations. Towed by H.M.S. Trident, the C.3 moored alongside her objective under very heavy fire. The six man crew (all of whom were decorated for their gallantry) abandoned the submarine, making use of a motor skiff which had been installed on the vessel. At 12:20 a.m. on 23 April 1918 the C.3’s packed cargo of high explosives was detonated leaving a 100 foot gap in the viaduct.

Lot 286

An exceptional Chelsea figure of Ceres, circa 1749Finely modelled on an impressive scale, the female figure standing contrapposto before a tree stump, nude save for the drapery gathered about her left hip where she holds sheaves of corn, a serrated scythe in her right hand, a wreath of corn securing her long hair which is tied in a bun and falls down between her shoulder blades, the square base and the stump incised with fine lines simulating wood grain, left in the white, 29.8cm highFootnotes:ProvenanceElizabeth Adams CollectionUndoubtedly a highlight of the author's collection, Elizabeth Adams illustrates two views of this remarkable model and notes, 'The figure of Ceres has a monumental aspect and may be one of the earliest works of Joseph Willems at Chelsea', see Chelsea Porcelain (2001), p.32-33.Chelsea figures of this early period are not only very rare but most surviving examples show signs of manufacturing difficulty in the form of firing cracks, warping and kiln specking. Conversely, the figure of Ceres stands proud, the glaze smooth and almost perfect. The modelling is, as Adams suggests, possibly attributable to Willems who was employed at Chelsea in 1749, on the cusp of the triangle and raised anchor periods. A group of Rustic Lovers in the British Museum (inv. no.1887,0307,II.6.a) is marked with the rare blue crown and trident mark, dating to circa 1749-50. Although this group has experienced problems in firing, in contrast to the figure of Ceres, there is a strong similarity in the modelling, especially the treatment of both female figures' hair and the 'combed' lines to the tree stumps and bases. The Rustic Lovers is referenced by F Severne Mackenna who states that he knows of only three, possibly four further triangle period figures, Ceres evidently not known to him at the time of writing. This figure is clearly a triumph of early English porcelain sculpture, a landmark piece in the history of Chelsea. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Capt Vivian Gunton. Concorde signed 12 x 8 colour photo. Captain Vivian Gunton started flying in 1958 with an RAF Flying Scholarship - on a Tiger Moth - at a grass aerodrome called Fairoaks. On leaving school he took one of the 42 places offered at the College of Air Training, Hamble, when it opened in 1960. After graduating from the College in 1962, Viv joined British European Airways and spent 8 years flying around Europe and the UK, first on the Vanguard then flying Tridents which were at that time the fastest civil passenger aeroplanes in the world. Promoted Captain in 1970, he spent 7 years flying in Scotland, which included three years flying the Scottish Air Ambulance Service and landing on the beach at Barra in the Outer Hebrides. He returned to London to fly the Trident again, and with the demise of the Trident in late 1985, Viv needed to find something faster to fly and so became a Concorde Captain. He flew Concorde for 11 years until he retired in September 1996. He subsequently spent two years, part time, flying a King-Air for Cega Air Ambulance. Viv lives with his wife in Odiham. When not gardening or flying aerobatics in a Chipmunk, they may be found narrow boating at a mind-bending 4 m.p.h. Good condition. All autographs come with a Certificate of Authenticity.
