She is one of the most popular and widely revered among Indian divinities and is associated with protection, strength, motherhood, destruction, and wars. The most popular legend associated with the goddess is of her killing of Mahishasura, a half-buffalo demon who did severe penance in order to please Brahma. Durga was created by the trimurti to destroy Mahishasura and was gifted a lion as her mount. She is seen as a motherly figure and often depicted as a beautiful woman, riding a lion or tiger, with many arms each carrying a weapon and often defeating demons.Auction result comparison: Type: Closely related Auction: Christie's New York, 20 March 2008, lot 345 Price: USD 5,000 or approx. A noted Belgian private collection, acquired from the above and thence by descent in the same family. Stefaan Grusenmeyer was a Belgian art dealer initially based in Ghent. In 1983, he opened a gallery in Brussels, which his son Karim took over in 2000. The gallery specializes in sculpture, archaeology, jewelry, and decorative arts from Southeast Asia, China, and India. Condition: Fine condition commensurate with age and with extensive weathering and wear, areas of erosion, some structural cracks and losses, minor nicks here and there, all as expected for a statue of this high age. Good natural patina.Weight: 22.6 g (incl. stand) Dimensions: Height 32 cm (excl. stand), 38.2 cm (incl. stand)With a modern wood stand. (2) Expert's note: This fragment is rare and was most likely part of an exterior structure of a lost and long-abandoned temple, exposed to the elements for hundreds of years. Such temple pieces have a particularly charming patina resulting from centuries of natural weathering, which is simply impossible to recreate even by the most talented and resourceful forger. A piece worth the close attention of the advanced collector!Durga slaying Mahisha is here represented in her multi-armed form, manifesting her supreme power as the dispeller of evil. Following the Devi Mahatmya text, she wields the mighty weapons lent to her by the assembly of male gods who singly could not defeat the demon. The worship of a mother goddess as the source of life and fertility has ancient roots, but the composition of the text Devi Mahatmya ("Glory of the Goddess") during the fifth to sixth century led to the dramatic transformation of the female principle into a great goddess of cosmic powers. Durga is the cosmic Magna Mater, and this popular iconic type encapsulates the struggle between the goddess and the demon Mahishasura, who symbolizes ignorance, disorder, chaos, and evil. Later textual sources generally refer to the subject as Mahishasuramardini, or 'killer of the buffalo demon'. She remains the most important and popular form of the great goddess known generically as Devi or Shakti.Literature comparison: Compare a related stone carving of Durga, dated to the late 9th century, Bihar, India, in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, accession number 2016.650. His hair pulled up into a high chignon adorned with sun and crescent moon symbols above the foliate crowns.Provenance: Old Viennese private collection, built over several generations between 1910 and 1975, thence by descent in the same family.Condition: Good condition with some wear, particularly to gilt, and minor casting flaws. Small nicks, losses and light scratches, some bending and dents, primarily to attributes. The base sealed with a double vajra plate.Weight: 915.1 gDimensions: Height 15.3 cmChakrasamvara's four heads are cast separately and inserted with an attachment tang at the bottom. (2)Chakrasamvara, embodying the most important transcendental ideals in Buddhist art, couples with Vajravarahi symbolizing a perfect union of wisdom and compassion. From Chakrasamvara's neck hangs a garland of severed heads strung on a length of human intestine and the hair of a corpse, signifying the purification of speech and the mental factors according to the Chittamatra or Mind-Only School as described by Asanga.Being so complex, only the best artists were fit to undertake the challenge of casting Chakrasamvara. The task most often fell to Newari master craftsmen from Nepal who produced such sculptures for domestic and Tibetan worship. The stylistic preferences of each of those two audiences are somewhat slight. But, while many contemporaneous Tibetan examples emphasize the ferociousness of Chakrasamvara's facial expressions, here instead, a benign intimacy is shared between the deities gazing into each other's eyes. This sentiment betrays a preference in Nepal for showing divine couples in harmony, as representatives of ideal matrimony.Auction result comparison: Type: Closely related Auction: Christie's New York, 13 September 2011, lot 356 Price: USD 20,000 or approx. EUR 24,000 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing Description: A gilt bronze figure of Chakrasamvara and Vajravarahi, Nepal, 17th centuryExpert remark: Compare the similar benign expression, the two in embrace gazing into each other's eyes, as well as the beaded jewelry and high chignons.
