A BLACK STONE FIGURE OF DURGA MAHISHASURAMARDINI, PRE-ANGKOR PERIOD, KHMER, 7TH CENTURYOpinion: Looking at Phnom Da style sculptures, one can see a great degree of cross-cultural influence. While one could argue that this sculptural style is distinctly of Khmer origin, with such early sites present in Vietnam, we are more likely seeing the spread of sources of foreign cultural influence, bringing things like Hinduism, coming from outside the region and merging with local cultures. Certain attributes of this sculpture in particular can be seen in early Gupta sculpture, such as the 4th century Harihara in the National Museum of New Delhi. It is also interesting to note that the earliest known written texts in Southeast Asia are from Vietnam, written during the 4th century, predating the first Khmer texts by hundreds of years.Finely carved in relief with four arms holding symbols of power, positioned above the severed head of a buffalo, with a tall crown and pendulous earlobes, backed by a striated nimbus.Provenance: Spink & Son, London, by 2 November 1999 (according to Christie's record). Born in Brooklyn, New York, his parents were Lawrence and Shirley Phillips, noted New York dealers in Asian fine arts, selling to the Met, the LACMA, the Chicago Art Institute, and the British Museum among others. Michael Phillips is a collector of Asian art himself, particularly Indian, Southeast Asian, and Himalayan sculpture. His most important films include The Sting (winning the Academy Award for Best Picture in 1973), Taxi Driver (winning the Palme d'Or at the 1976 Cannes Film Festival), and Steven Spielberg's Close Encounters of the Third Kind.Condition: Good condition, commensurate with age. (2)Mahishasura was a shape-shifting king who was granted the power of immortality by Lord Brahma. After years of tormenting his people, he was vanquished by a manifestation of the demon-fighting form of Parvati known as Durga. Durga fought Mahishasura over a period of fifteen days during which he kept changing his shape into different animals. She finally vanquished him when he took the form of a buffalo, slaying him with her trident. It is just after this victorious moment that we see Durga depicted here, with the severed head of Mahishasura laying at Durga's feet and her four arms holding the conch shell, the wheel, the ball, and the club, symbolizing the powers given to her by Vishnu. It is an ancient story of good versus evil.Literature comparison:Compare with a stone image of a female deity from the Da Nang Museum of Cham Sculpture, exhibited in Arts of Ancient Viet Nam: From River Plain to Open Sea at the Houston Museum of Fine Arts, both statues showing an unusual and rare striated nimbus. Finely painted with the three-faced and six-armed winged deity in blissful union with his consort Diptachakra, stamping over the splayed bodies of Maheshvara and Uma atop a lotus base above jewels and blood-filled skullcups, the main hands holding a pointed kila at the heart, the others holding gold vajras, a trident, and flames entwined around the index finger, his consort holding a kapala from which one of his heads drinks, engulfed in flames below ferocious dragons, the upper register with an image of blue Samantabhadra in union with his consort Samantabhadri.Provenance: A noted Hungarian collection. (2)Vajrakila is identified by the phurba (dagger), also known as a kila, held in his main hands. Vajrakila is an important meditational deity in the Nyingma, Sakya, Jonang, and Kagyu orders of Tibetan Buddhism. In the Nyingma tradition, such wrathful deities were referred to as Herukas (blood-drinkers) and embodied a meditational focus, such as body, speech, or mind. Vajrakila represents the activity aspect of the Heruka tradition.Vajrakila is one of the great protectors of Tantric Buddhism. According to the Tibetan hidden texts, terma, the deity emerged in a previous eon during the time of the Buddha's taming of the wrathful Shiva-Rudra, the archdemon of pride and egoism. Shiva was in fact reborn as a powerful demon, in the malignant form of Rudra, as a result of having broken the tantric vows in his previous lifetimes. Unable to peacefully convince Rudra to recognize his erroneous ways, the Buddhas in Akanishta Heaven emanated from themselves a powerful being to destroy him. Another narrative relates Vajrakila to the wisdom manifestation of all Buddhas, emanating from the heart of Vajrasattva to eradicate all ignorance and emotional afflictions preventing the dawning of realization. A VERY LARGE BRONZE OF SHIVA NATARAJA, SOUTH INDIA, 18TH - 19TH CENTURYFinely cast, the eight-armed deity gracefully presented with a raised leg, dancing on a lotus pedestal atop a rectangular plinth, within a flaming aureole, his right foot resting upon the demon Apasmarapurusha, his hands holding various implements including a drum, flame, dagger, disk, and trident. His face neatly incised with almond-shaped eyes, gently arched brows, an urna, and full lips, his hair radiating in serpentine tresses, the head surmounted by a naga headdress.Provenance: From an Austrian private collection. At the same time, he is also its destroyer. Much symbolism is attached to this specific form of Shiva. His drum stands for the creation of the world. His open palm protects human beings while his downward stretched hand symbolizes the solace of the world. His other hand holds the fire standing for the dissolution of the world. The dwarf on whom he tramples represents ignorance and the large flaming aureole the cosmos. Y A FINE DUTCH BRASS MOUNTED EBONY GRANDE-SONNERIE STRIKING TABLE CLOCK WITH MOONPHASE AND CALENDARJACOB HASIUS, AMSTERDAM, CIRCA 1740The four pillar movement with thick plates measuring approximately 8.75 by 6.375 inches enclosing fusee for the going train with verge escapement regulated short bob pendulum, the hour and quarter trains both with standing barrels secured to the frontplate and sounding the quarter followed by the hour on a graduated pair of bells every quarter hour, the backplate finely engraved with a sunburst mask flanked by foliate scrollwork incorporating ribbon-tied martial trophies over grotesque mask surmounted foliate strapwork bordered signature cartouche engraved Jacob Hasius, Amsterdam Fecit to lower margin, the 8 inch square brass dial with scroll-bordered shaped cartouche further signed IACOB, HASIUS, AMSTERDAM and incorporating date-of-the month aperture to the upper part of the matted centre, over twin shaped chamfer-cut sector apertures revealing month-of-the-year and day-of-the-week indications labelled in Dutch and engraved with their respective deities, within applied silvered Roman numeral chapter ring with stylised trident half hour markers, with scroll-pierced steel hands and lambrequin mask centred scroll cast spandrels to angles within a herringbone engraved border to the edges of the plate, the silvered arch with rolling moonphase set within very finely engraved surround incorporating lunettes and overall inhabited with Classical deities including Poseidon and Zeus together with other allegorical figures and trumpeting putti flanking an aperture for age of the moon to the apex, the ebony veneered bell-top case with scallop-shell centred scroll-engraved hinged shaped brass carrying handle and fine foliate scroll strapwork pierced and engraved fretwork overlay to both the convex upper and the tall concave lower sections of the superstructure incorporating central grotesque masks, urns and dolphins to the latter, over complex top moulding applied with fine chiselled brass vase finials above opening front incorporating brass fillet moulding bordering the glazed dial aperture and engraved winged cherub mask and scroll upper quadrant frets, the sides with circular over concave-topped scroll-engraved brass sound frets incorporating Classical portrait bust-centred cartouches, the rear matching the front, on cavetto moulded skirt base bound with strapwork scroll engraved brass over finely detailed hairy lion's paw feet.51.5cm (20.25ins) high with handle down, 31.5cm (12.5ins) wide, 20.5cm (8ins) deep. Provenance:Purchased at Christies Amsterdam sale of EUROPEAN AND NOBLE COLLECTIONS 14th December 2011 (lot 60) for 34,600 Euros. Previously the property of a Dutch private collector; with H. Brokke, Amsterdam in 1966, and the Dreesman Collection, circa 1928. Jacob Hasius is recorded in Baillie, G.H. Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World as working 1682-1747. He had a workshop in the Jan Roodenpoortstorenteeg and is listed in the 'Register of Good Men' in 1704 and 1716. The specification of grande-sonnerie striking, triple calendar indication and moonphase, coupled with the exceptional dial engraving and the profuse use of pierced and engraved brass mounts to the case suggest that the present clock was made as a 'statement piece' most likely for a member of the wealthy Amsterdam merchant class.Condition Report: Movement is complete, fundamentally original and is in relatively clean working condition. The grande-sonnerie striking is operational however is prone to either counting the hours incorrectly or not tripping now and again suggesting that a gentle service is probably due. All the underdial-work for the calendar indications are present and operational but will most likely require some adjustment and synchronisation. The dial is in fine original condition with exceptional engraving to the arch. The centre hole (for the hands) has a correction (from the time of making) in the form of a filled part-circle beneath the present hole otherwise faults are very much limited to a visible rivet mark (for a calendar wheel carrier post) to the matting near three o'clock. The case has a vertical veneer patch repair to the left hand upright (bordering the brass fillet moulding for the gazed aperture) of the back door otherwise is in fine original condition with faults very much limited to minor bumps, scuffs, shrinkage and other age-related blemishes. The brass frets are complete and of fine quality with good strong engraved detail throughout.Clock is complete with integral bob pendulum and a winding key. Condition Report Disclaimer

It is a work of very worthy formal elegance of the French school, an expression of the refinement of the Rocaille world.
