John Randall Bratby (1922-1992), oil painting on canvas, "The Artist and Diana with Lilies" 1972. 154 cm x 90 cm, in white handmade frame with laminated museum glass. NOTE - Diana Hills was the artist's mistress for whom he left his wife Jean Cooke. Diana Hills was Bratby's inspiration post the Kitchen Sink Movement (see illustration). ARR CONDITION REPORT: The painting is framed and glazed. It is possible to see the rear of the canvas which is clean and unblemished. The painting is in very good order with no visible paint loss. The colours are strong and bright. We can see no evidence of any repairs to the canvas. There is some slight discolouration to the canvas at the very bottom right hand corner of the picture indicating that the painting has been hung in a slightly damp environment. The bottom board of the frame behind the glass also suggests this. This is not a significant problem it is only very mild mildew which should easily wipe with a damp cloth or brush off. The frame itself is a little scuffed in places and a little dirty.
John Randall Bratby (1922-1992), watercolour and pencil drawing, "Janet on Swivel Chair". 182 cm x 65 cm, circa 1960, framed and glazed. NOTE - One of the artists "Kitchen Sink" works (see illustration). ARR CONDITION REPORT: Lot 920 is on what we would believe to be thick artist roll cartridge paper. The signature is on the front left hand leg of the stool. Whilst the main image is in generally good order there are some marks to the cream surround. These are a combination of the beginning traces of foxing and or dirt behind the glass. This should be visible from our images. The picture is glazed and has a narrow gilt outer frame which has some minor edge blemishes and scuffs.
