VISENTINI, Antonio. [View of Venice]. Platea S. Pauli Privatis Aedibus ornata (plate no IV). Venice, c.1790.Engraving after Canaletto, 405 x 555 mm.The piazza San Paolo, or more familiarly San Polo, is the second largest in Venice after the piazza San Marco. Originally open grazing land, it was paved over in 1493, and soon became a public forum for bullfighting, sermons and festivities such as masked balls, commedia dell-arte and carnivals. This scene also includes one of the few wells or fountains to be found in Venice. "Self-styled as painter, architect, and engraver, Antonio Maria Visentini (1688-1782) enjoyed a long career in Venice where he was connected to the Accademia and to the artistic and publishing circle centred around his patron, Consul Joseph Smith. Visentini's etchings are distinguished in the confidence and authority of their perspectival projection and etched line. Visentini's buildings seldom sag and never "sink" under their own weight into the water of the canals as they occasionally might in the work of Carlevaris and Marieschi. Canaletto's compositions are quite various and are refreshingly dramatic in the contrast between the large foreground buildings and the smaller ones in the receding perspective. These views were crucial to forming the image of Venice in the mind of its visitors" (Millard).

White Star Line SS Republic C.Q.D. 1909 silver Life Saving MedalObverse depicts SS Republic with” C.Q.D.” and “SS Republic” below; reverse legend “FOR GALLANTRY”. This example retains the original crimson ribbon and pin fitting.Awarded to the crews of the Ships Florida, Baltic and SS Republic, for saving the lives of 1,700 passengers, following the collision between the Florida and Republic. The Republic later sank, all lives were saved. Following this incident, White Star incorrectly assumed large ships would take longer to sink leading to a reduction of life boats on their large ships with disastrous results in 1912 when the Titanic was sunk by an iceberg with huge loss of life. C.Q.D. was Marconi’s 1904 precursor to the internationally used SOS distress call.

AN HISTORICALLY INTERESTING SETTLE, CONSTRUCTED FROM THE GANGWAY BOARDS AND REMOVED PANELLING OF THE P&O LINER R.M.S. RAWALPINDI , SUNK IN ACTION AGAINST SHARNHORST AND GNEISENAU, 23 RD NOVEMBER, 1939 constructed in flame mahogany with hinged box seats, arched panelled backs and sunburst motif over with brass plaque inscribed P.&O. S.S. ‘Rawalpindi’ Sunk in Action, 23 rd November, 1939 , flanked by a pair of carved gangway boards with P&O crest and ships name -- 49½ x 43¼ x 18¼in. (126 x 110 x 46cm.) Rawlapindi was one of four ‘R’ Class liners launched for the P&O Line in 1925. Built by Harland & Wolff Ltd., Belfast she registered 16,619 gross tons and her quadruple expansion four cylinder engines could develop a respectable 17 knots. Classed as an armed merchant cruiser, upon the outbreak of World War II, she together with her sisters were requisitioned by the Admiralty who removed their aft funnels and fitted eight 6” and two 3” guns. Manned by 302 officers and men from the R.N.R., Rawalpindi was attached to the Northern Patrol and, on 23 rd November 1939, was south east of Iceland when she sighted the German battlecruisers Scharnhorst and Gneisenau attempting to break out into the Atlantic for commerce raiding operations. Laying a smoke screen, she tried to place herself in a nearby fog bank but the Germans were far faster. Defying a warning shot to stop, Captain Kennedy decided to deny them a prize and was heard to say We’ll fight them both, they’ll sink us, and that will be that. Good-bye . Rawalpindi reported the enemy's position and, despite the disparity in armament, managed to hit Scharnhorst in the quarter of an hour before she was sunk. The cruiser Newcastle (see lot 99) which was next in the patrol line, closed and sighted the battlecruiser's lights forcing them to return to base as their position was known. Rawalpindi sank taking her Captain, 38 officers and 226 ratings with her, 37 men were picked up by the German ships, 11 by H.M.S. Chitral , another converted liner, and a further 11 by Newcastle . Captain Kennedy (father of broadcaster Ludovic Kennedy) was mentioned in dispatches, and the crews of the German ships awarded the High Seas Fleet badge for the sinking. Of the fifty-five liners converted to armed use, fifteen had been sunk by the close of 1941 and the remainder were withdrawn from Atlantic service as soon as possible.

A beautiful print by Coulson, depicting early morning preparations of a Lancaster bomber in the mist. Autographed by 463 Squadron Flight Lieutenant Bruce Alexander Buckham . The vendor had this print flown all the way to Australia for signing, and then all the way back. Has been signed by Buckham in pen to the lower right corner and has added ' DSO, DFC ' to his signature. Framed and glazed to a total size of: 60cm x 84cm. In September 1944, a flight of 19 aircraft led by the famous Royal Air Force ''Dambuster'' squadron set off from Lossiemouth in Scotland to achieve what a series of raids in the previous couple of years had failed to do - sink the Tirpitz, the biggest and deadliest German battleship. The mission to Tromso Fiord in Norway, where Hitler's admirals believed the pride of their fleet was safely out of Allied reach, included a lone Australian crew from Royal Australian Air Force 463 Squadron. Their task, in addition to supporting the attack, was to film the operation. In the cockpit of the Avro Lancaster bomber nicknamed ''Whoa Bessie'' was a 26-year-old former BHP clerk from Sydney, Flight Lieutenant Bruce Alexander Buckham who remembered the attack vividly. Buckham passed away in 2011. * a percentage of the hammer price of this lot is donated towards ' The Attack On The Sorpe Dam ' film.
