John Fairbairn Fannen (British, 1847-1904), The Ocean Liner "Elbe" struck by the Steamship Crathie, 31st January 1895. oil on canvas, signed J. Fannen lower left and dated 1896. Queenan, Sunderland canvas stamp, modern gold reproduction frame. 20 x 33in. (50.8 x 83.8 cm.). * Notes: Painted in 1896 the year after the tragic sinking of the German ocean liner SS Elbe after being struck by the Scottish steam ship Crathie in the North Sea. The SS Elbe had left Bremerhaven for New York early on 30th January 1895 with 354 passengers on board. That night conditions in the North Sea were freezing and there were huge seas. As conditions worsened, she discharged warning rockets to alert other ships to her presence, but these were either not seen or ignored by the steamship Crathie en route from Rotterdam to Aberdeen with general cargo and twelve crew. The Crathie collided with the Elbe at 5.30am on the morning of 31st January 1895 striking her on the port bow with such force that she began to sink immediately. Most of the passengers were asleep when the captain gave the order to abandon ship. Only two lifeboats were launched, one of which capsized as a result of too many passengers trying to squeeze into the boat. There were just twenty survivors. The Crathie was also badly damaged in the collision but managed to struggle on to Rotterdam. Asked why he had not stayed to help and pick up passengers from the Elbe, the captain said that he ship would sink and besides it appeared to him that the Elbe was sailing away from his position..

2004 VW Type 2 T2c Danbury CaravanetteMake: Volkswagen Model: Type 2 T2c Danbury CaravanetteYear: 2004Mileage: 108180VIN: PBWGB07X64P000938Configuration: Right Hand DriveRegistration: WX54MFFTransmission: manualAlthough the 'Bay Window' Volkswagen Type 2 Transporter went out of production in Europe in 1979, in Latin America, where VW had an especially strong presence, manufacture of the T2 carried on. Brazilian manufacture only ceased in 2013, by which point the roof had been raised by 10 inches to create the T2c variant and the venerable old air-cooled engine at the rear had been swapped for a water-cooled unit. This example is one of the last with air-cooled power, in this case a 1.6-litre unit. It was constructed in Brazil during 2004 before coming over to the UK where Beetles (UK) Limited converted it into a Danbury camper, with two-tone white over pale green paint, non-standard cloth, bench seat that converts into a rock 'n' roll bed, two-burner stove with sink, immobiliser, underseal, auxiliary battery, elevating roof and vent, CD radio and four speakers, winter pack (including petrol heater), front-mounted solid spare wheel cover, chrome trim pack, bike rack, awning, roof rack and mains hook-up. Further modifications throughout the years included Suede Green leather and tartan upholstery, full leather door cards, Porsche-style Fuchs alloy wheels, walnut and tulip wood floor and table, new cooker and sink unit, and a flat-screen Alpine media system. A £2750 bill in the paperwork indicates a reconditioned 1.6-litre Brazilian exchange engine was fitted in October 2016, while it seems a full restoration has also been carried out relatively recently, judging by the van's body condition. The odometer currently shows 108,206km (67,236 miles) and five previous owners are noted on the V5C. There's a fresh MoT valid until May 2023. The engine starts easily and runs well. The history folder includes the V5C, owner's manual, service book (stamped up to 108,174km in December 2021), Alpine Media Station manuals in both paper and CD form, and a Volkswagen Transporter Haynes Enthusiast Guide book by Jonathan Harvey. There's some maintenance invoices, including the bill for the reconditioned engine. PLEASE SEE BELOW FOR VIDEO PRODUCED 30TH MAY BY ACA OF THIS CAR.
