As a Director (1951-1965), she took a forward-thinking, enlightened approach, ensuring the success of the Kitchen Sink School and exhibiting Francis Bacon in 1953. 2017 Shepherds Hut by Artisan Shepherds Huts Transmission: Mileage:Historians have traced shepherd's huts back to 1596, where an early text reads 'the Shepheard hath his cabin going upon a wheel for to move here and there at his pleasure'. They were a familiar site on the downlands of Southern England, existing as an important part of country people's lives. The most famous shepherds hut in history is described by Dorset novelist Thomas Hardy in the opening chapters of Far from the Madding Crowd.Artisan Shepherds Huts of Sussex was created by a specialist joiner who had had been working on listed, historic buildings and bespoke furniture before turning his talents and time creating meticulously crafted shepherd's huts from his medieval barn workshop in Sussex. Using traditional materials including the wheels being cast from molten iron using original patterns, floors of solid oak and all fittings such as door handles and window fastenings were high-quality reproductions. These huts can be used as a garden retreat, spare room, studio, office or more recently as additional space for AirBnB properties. This bespoke Artisan Shepherds Hut was commissioned five years ago by the sellers to provide them with additional accommodation at a cost of over £35,000. Measuring 491cm long, 230cm wide and 300cm high it was built on a farm tailer for easy movement. The floor is solid oak, and it is fully insulated. It has full electrical supply including lights, sockets and a water heater which is connected under the hut. The internal cladding is painted in Farrow & Ball colour No. 229 Elephant's Breath and the curtains were handmade in a luxury mustard velvet. The bedroom area has a double bed, bedside table and a chair, all of which can removed therefore creating maximum flexibility of the space. At the other end of the hut there is a sink and a wood fuelled small stove for cooking and heating. Easily moved, this useful hut is pleasantly decorated and would be a delight in any garden as an office, guest bedroom or just as a garden retreat.

To Mr. G. C. Brooke for Gallantry in saving life on the 5th August - 1879, Board of Trade Large Silver Medal for Life at Sea in original case of issue. On 30 October 1879, the Government of India forwarded to the India Office an extract from a letter written by Captain Methven of the P&O ship Kaisar-i-Hind. Captain Methven wished to notify his employers and the authorities of the gallant act of bravery on the part of one of his officers in rescuing one of his shipmates from drowning. Correspondence in a file in the India Office Records described the rescue. This occurred at 10 am on 5 August, when an Indian seaman fell from the foreyard (the lowest yard on a ship's foremast) on to the awning and then overboard, striking an awning stanchion on the way and sustaining several injuries in the process. The alarm was raised, but the seaman was quickly swept astern of the ship. A life-buoy was thrown to the stricken man but he was too weak to hold on to it. As described by the Captain, the second officer G C Brookes made a full spring and took the water close to the spot, felt the lascar with his feet at this time below the water let himself sink and clenched him; but there were several instants before Mr Brookes came to the surface. A rope was thrown, which Brookes was able to grab while holding tightly to the Indian seaman, and both men were pulled aboard the ship. Of the rescue Captain Methven wrote: The act was as prompt as it was gallant. The tide ran dangerously strong. The man was stunned and disabled, and an instant later and he was inevitable gone…. Altogether it was well done. https://blogs.bl.uk/untoldlives/2022/04/rescue-at-sea-of-a-man-overboard-.html

Three: Coder K. J. W. Wison, Royal Navy, who was killed in action in H.M.S. Firedrake when she was sunk on 17 December 1942 1939-45 Star; Atlantic Star; War Medal 1939-45, with named Admiralty enclosure; Memorial Scroll ‘Coder K. J. W. Wilson, Royal Navy’, extremely fine (3) £100-£140 --- Kenneth Joseph William Wilson, was serving in H.M.S. Firedrake, an 'F' class Destroyer, and lead escort to convoy ON153, with 43 ships bound for Canada sailing in a Force 12 storm, the worst the Atlantic had seen for a very long time. At around 17.00 the ASDIC operator picked up a contact. HMS Firedrake tracked the contact to about 5 miles south of the convoy, when at 20.10, she was hit by a torpedo fired by U-boat U211, breaking her in two. The bow section sank immediately, with the stern just managing to stay afloat. Lieutenant D. J. Dampier RN had found that there were 35 hands still on board and quickly got the men to work shoring up the bulkheads of No. 3 boiler room, and making safe and jettisoning the depth charges and torpedoes. The gun crew were ordered to fire star shells to attract the attention of the other escorts because all the radio and signalling equipment had gone with the bow part of the ship. Around 22.00 one of the other escorts - HMS Sunflower, a Flower class Corvette, was attracted by the star shells so she made towards them, firing star shells herself. The skipper first thought that H.M.S. Firedrake’s stern section was a U-boat and was about to fire at it before realising what he saw. He tried to get Sunflower as close as possible to H.M.S. Firedrake in order to get the survivors off, but the weather was so bad and the sea too rough. There were 60 foot waves breaking over the two ships, which were bobbing about like corks, so he decided to stand by and hope the weather would get better. At about 0040 on the 17th December, the weather worsened and the bulkheads started to give way under the tremendous battering. H.M.S. Firedrake’s stern started to sink, so the men had no option but to take to the water, and at 00.45 the stern sank. H.M.S. Sunflower moved in quickly to pick up the men in the water, a Newfoundland rating, G. J. Furey, had a rope tied around his waist and was lowered down the side of Sunflower. He would swim out to a man and grab hold of him, then his mates on board would heave them back to the ship and get him onboard. He and his mates managed to get 27 hands on board, but one later died. H.M.S. Firedrake was lost with the 168 men. Wilson is commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial. Sold with a file of copied research, a copy photograph of the recipient; and a hardback third edition of the book ‘Firedrake’ by A. D. Divine.

1967 Volkswagen Type 2 Campervan Registration no. TGC 536E Chassis no. 237098765 Engine no. To be advised•Numerous mechanical and interior upgrades•Left-hand drive•Tuned 1,776cc engine•'Freeway Flyer' gearboxFootnotes:As readily recognisable as the immortal 'Beetle' itself, the VW Type 2 and its derivatives enjoyed an even longer period in production than their saloon progenitor. The original was conceived in the late 1940s by a Dutch Volkswagen agent, Ben Pon, who drew up plans for a van based on the Beetle floorpan and running gear. Known as the Volkswagen Type 2 (the Beetle saloon being Type 1) the result of Pon's efforts arrived in 1950 and almost immediately proliferated into a bewildering variety of models catering for an enormous range of commercial and domestic activities. The original retained the Beetle's rear-mounted 1,200cc air-cooled engine and four-speed gearbox, the latter suitably re-ratioed to cope with the van's greater weight. Engines grew in size and power, and both handling and comfort improved as development progressed. The first major revision of this outstandingly successful design occurred in 1968, by which time almost two million had been sold worldwide. The replacement, also called 'Type 2', was an entirely new vehicle, larger and roomier than before but still rear-engined. Power units grew in size from 1,600cc to 2 litres before production ceased in 1978 with the introduction of the third generation.Upgraded both inside and out, this left-hand drive VW split-screen campervan is powered by a 1,776cc engine featuring an up-rated camshaft, twin 45 EMPI carburettors, a Petronix electronic distributor, race exhaust system, and serpentine belt set-up. The 'Freeway Flyer' transmission has covered only 1,000miles and incorporates an up-rated fourth gear and EMPI short-shift gear lever. Other notable features include a 6'-shortened front beam with air ride; Wilwood 4-pot brake calliper conversion; rack-and-pinion steering; Type 2 Detectives adjustable rear arms with disc brake conversion; and EMPI five-spoke wheels. The interior too incorporates numerous desirable upgrades, featuring a gas hob and sink; climate controlled central heating; pop-up TV; 240V inverter; two leisure batteries; 'rock 'n roll' bed; Safari pop-out front windows; and pop-out side windows. Offered with a V5C document. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
