GUNTHER LUTJENS (1889 - 1941) German Admiral whose military service spanned almost 30 years. Lutjens was one of only three flag officers who protested, in writing, against the anti-Jewish 'Kristallnacht' pogroms, but is most remembered for going down on the battleship BISMARCK on May 27, 1941. Excessively rare S.P., 5 x 8 in. b/w, a three-quarter length pose in uniform, Berlin, ca. 1934, signed on the mount: 'Lutjens, Kapitan zur See, Kommandant der Kreuzer Karlsruhe' Also signed by the photoghrapher` in pencil. Fine. Like the BISMARCK, the KARLSRUHE was sunk by British warships, in her case on April 9, 1940 after being torpedoed by a British submarine. BISMARCK would sink a little more than a year later.
Pair: Stoker First Class J. Darling, Royal Navy, who was killed in action when H.M.S. Queen Mary was sunk during the Battle of Jutland, 31 May 1916 British War and Victory Medals (K.27653 J. Darling. Sto.1 R.N.) good very fine (2) £100-£140 --- John Darling was born in Durham on 4 June 1888 and joined the Royal Navy as a Stoker Second Class on 4 August 1915. Promoted Stoker First Class on 9 October 1915, he joined H.M.S. Queen Mary on 27 April 1916, and he was killed in action at the Battle of Jutland on 31 May 1916. During the battle H.M.S. Queen Mary, under the command of Captain C. I. Prowse, engaged the Derfflinger, putting one of her turrets out of action, and then scored four hits on SMS Seydlitz. The German battlecruiser hit back striking ´Q´ turret before sending more 12 inch shells to hit near ´A´ and ´B´ turrets before scoring another hit on ´Q´ turret. Queen Mary´s forward magazine exploded, the ship listed to port and began to sink amid more explosions. 1,266 of the crew went down with her, with only 18 men surviving. Darling is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial.
Great War Medal Trio Awarded to an officer in the Royal Naval Reserve, consisting of 1914-15 Star medal, British War medal and Victory medals, “LIEUT H.B. SPANTON R.N.R.” Lot also includes a copy of the book, C.B.415 ‘War Instructions for British Merchant Ships, August 1917’, copy number 7861. This being a manual covering a wide variety of subjects bound in a lead lined outer cover designed so that the book would sink if thrown overboard to stop it falling into enemy hands. Henry Broadley Spanton, born into a farming family on 9th January 1883 in the village of Nonington in Kent. In 1911 he is shown as a Mariner, 2nd Mate, still living on the family farm. He enrolled into the Royal Naval Reserve on 27th April 1915 for the duration of the war. Serving on ‘Ark Royal’ and ‘Empress’ he was demobilised on 2nd October 1919. Post war he seems to have moved back into the family trade and is shown as a farmer at Lenhall Farm, Bishopsbourne near Canterbury on the 1939 Register. Henry Broadley Spanton died on 3rd June 1947 at the Kent & Canterbury Hospital, Canterbury, Kent.

A large 19th century sandstone salting trough / shallow sink with two rounded corners. Approximately 170cm long, 75cm wide, 17cm tall and 8cm deep. There has been an antique repair to the trough on one side. A great piece. A forklift / loadall can be here to load onto your trailer / back of van however this must be arranged prior to collection.

Vintage signed and inscribed 7.5 x 9.5photograph of Roberts seated outdoors in a three-quarter length pose in conversation with producer Karel Reisz on the set of the British kitchen sink drama film This Sporting Life (1963). Signed by Roberts in fountain pen ink to the image. It was for her performance as Margaret Hammond in this film that Roberts was nominated for a Best Actress Oscar. Scarce. VG
