A rare Documentary earthenware jug, c.1805-20, painted with a detailed scene of Red Cross Street, Liverpool including a coach named Alexander (?) and inscribed London/Liverpool, ships and warehouses beneath a script SH, the reverse with street title and crown, handle riveted chips, stain, wear, 18cm no. 253. According to notes with the jug, attributed to Torksey, it was made for Samuel Henshaw who kept the Crown Inn in Red Cross Street where he appears in the Street Directories of the period. It was bought by Exley in Scarborough in 1940

An 18th century court sword with blued and gilt blade marked SH (probably S. Harvey of Birmingham). Shell guard with lion couchant in relief. Mother of pearl grips with cartouche with relief of Minerva to one side and raised diamond shaped escutcheon to other side of grip. Escutcheon engraved with crown and initial MI. Pommel in the form of a classical warrior wearing Etruscan helmet. All metal fittings of the hilt are gilded.

Since there are perforations at the base of the spout, it has been suggested that this unusual vessel was intended for tea tasting (Blackwood & Head, The King Street Factory, 2003, p355). ++In unusually fine condition
