The Pelham Holles family were Dukes of Newcastle, one of them becoming prime minister. This portrait was at Welbeck Abbey, then Stanmer Park. Sir John Holles raised troops against the Armada (illustrated top right). This was at Welbeck Abbey. His character, style, person and virtues are described in a long inscription painted on the back. CONDITION REPORT: relined, no inscription verso - on the front either side of the portrait, visible overpainting throughout - some old tears and holes have been filled to the left of the sitter. Inscription could possibly be on the original canvas under the relining.
