Gabriel Frederic Viardot zwei Stühle Frankreich, um 1890, im Stil des Japonismus gestaltete elegante Salonstühle aus massiver Buche, braun gebeizt, aufwendig geschnitzte Zarge und Lehne, einer von plastischem Drachen bekrönt, alt restauriert, Polster erneuert, ein Fuß mit kleiner Fehlstelle, Verleimung teilweise gelockert, gering restaurierungsbedürftig, H 93 cm, SH 47 cm und H 88 cm, SH 47 cm. Künstlerinfo: Gabriel Viardot ist vor allem für seine unverwechselbaren orientalischen Möbel bekannt, nachdem Viardot 1861 Inhaber seines Familienunternehmens geworden war, zogen Viardot Fréres et Cie an verschiedene Adressen in Paris, bevor sie sich 1878 in der Rue Amelot 36 niederließen, wo sie bis zur Jahrhundertwende blieben. Der Stil von Viardot war von japanischen Vorbildern beeinflusst, wurde aber vor allem durch die große Menge an Dekorationsartikeln inspiriert, die aus China und Hanoi, der Kolonie Französisch-Indochina nach Paris importiert wurden. Auf der Pariser Weltausstellung 1867 wurde er mit vier Medaillen ausgezeichnet, auf der Weltausstellung 1878 erhielt er eine Silbermedaille. Set of eight Victorian oak dining chairs, bar backs with reeses slats, dropin rush seats, square tapering legs and sH stretchers, including two elbow chairs, width 51cm, height 88cm, and six single chairs.Qty: 8Condition report:The chairs have come from the same home as the previous lot and match rather well both in terms of colour but also size -they fit comfortably with three along each side and the arms on the ends (although the armchairs do not tuck right under the table due to the table aprons). All frames are sound just with a slight degree of movement. Some old repairs to the legs, and some of the bars to the backs may have been replaced. The rush seats are in good order and have fair age if they are not original. Colour rubbing to the arm ends.

Davidson. R.N.); Royal Navy L.S. & G.C., V.R., narrow suspension, impressed naming (A. W. Davidson. Sh. Stewd., H.M.S. Victorious) mounted court-style for display, light contact marks to the VR awards, very fine and better (3) £600-£800 --- Provenance: Dix Noonan Webb, December 2012. Alfred William Davidson was born in Brixham, Devon, on 9 May 1868 and joined the Royal Navy as a Ship’s Steward Boy on 27 May 1883. Advanced Ship’s Steward on 13 March 1893, he served in H.M.S. Swallow from 14 April 1893 to 1 August 1896, and was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 4 June 1901. He was appointed Warrant Steward on 1 January 1910, and served during the Great War as a Commissioned Victualling Officer in H.M.S. Pembroke. He was advanced Commissioned Steward on 14 April 1917, and Paymaster on 7 August 1918. Sold with copied record of service, medal roll extracts, and other research.

Twelve diamonds measure 2.5 to 2.6 mm and eight measure 2.4 to 2.5 mm; total weight of all diamonds is 1.15 cts; good proportions and finish; color ranges from G to H; clarity is VS-2 to SI-1. Horikawa (SH Toys of Japan) 1960's "Machine Robot" - scarce battery-operated 12"/30cm robot is dark metallic grey, some surface corrosion around the opening battery compartment cover at the rear but does include the see through plastic chest with green/red gear train, red feet and beacon to head, untested but appears otherwise Good for display and still retains its Fair to Good illustrated card box (split to one corner of the lid) with inner card packing piece.
Horikawa (SH Toys of Japan) "Busy Cart Robot" - very scarce 1960's example with tinprinted body, clean battery compartment to rear although the plastic base of the compartment is cracked, but doesn't detract from the models appearance on display, finished in dark grey/pale yellow with detailed tinprinting. This model has been retro fitted with a replacement after market plastic wheelbarrow but does include the original plastic hard hat - still a Good to Good Plus example, 11"/28cm high.

The sheet does not show obvious evidence for losses or damage, there is some ageing (browning) to the paper and some staining. There are a few isolated and sparsly distributed spots of foxing to the centre-right. Frame has general wear and tear.

He attended the Priory Grammar School before leaving for Cambridge University where he studied Classics and English. He qualified as a teacher, working first at Rydal School in North Wales before being appointed Head of English at Oundle School in 1982 where he remained until his retirement in 2007. Later in life he returned to his roots in Shropshire and spent his time pursuing his love of the arts, and built up a very carefully curated collection of antique furniture, antiquarian books and in particular, 19th Century English Watercolours. Roberts had a keen eye and focused on some of Britain’s best loved landscape painters such as David Cox, John Varley, Paul Sandby, Peter de Wint and William Leighton Leitch.
