Royal Navy L.S. & G.C., V.R., narrow suspension (Henry G. Redding. Sh. Stewd. 3rd Class H.M.S. Royal Adelaide) impressed naming, very fine £70-£90 --- Henry George Redding was born in Woolwich, Kent, in May 1850. He joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in November 1864, and advanced to Ship’s Steward 1st Class in September 1884. Redding saw multiple periods of service with H.M.S. Royal Adelaide, including from March to October 1880 (awarded L.S. & G.C. in June 1880). He was shore pensioned in October 1889. Sold with copied service papers.

Property from an Important Qajar Family Lots 92-116A Qajar miniature Qur'an,Iran, signed Salih Muhammad Hassan al-Isfahani, dated AH 1241?/1825-26AD,Arabic manuscript on paper, 175ff., with 21ll. of fine black naskh script within gold rule, vocalisation in red, with gold and polychrome verse markers, opening bifolio extensively decorated with gold and polychrome flowers, headers in blue naskh on gold ground with polychrome decoration, marginal decoration in gold and poychrome, in lacquer floral binding, back board loose, export stamps, in gilt-decorated red morocco slip case, owner's inscription dated 1328AH/Pahlavi export stamp dated AH 1315/1936 AD at frontfolio 10.6 x 7cm.Provenance: Formerly in the private collection of 'Abd al-Wahhab Khan, Nizam ul-Mulk (1848-1916) and thence by descent in the early 20th century to a private London collection Footnotes: The scribe, Muhammad Hassan al-Isfahani, is known to have copied another three manuscripts, all of prayers and dated between AH 1237 and 1242/1821 and 1827 AD (Mehdi Bayani, Ahval va asar-e khosh-nevisan, vol.4, Tehran, 1358 sh., pp.147-48); another qur'an copied by Muhammad Hassan al-Isfahani for Sadr Al-A'zam (Prime Minister) Amin Al-Dawla was sold at Christie's 10 October 2013, Lot 115.  Condition Report: The lacquered covered shows some minimal losses to their edges and corners. The surface is scratched and shows some cracks overall, as expected for lacquered works of this period. Some scattered minimal losses can be noticed, mostly occurring in the marginal areas. The lower cover is now detached. The spine is in fair condition.Overall the text bloc shows strong edges and corners with minimal scuff consistent with the lot's age and use. The opening bifolio is now detached form the text bloc. It shows strong pigments overall and is in good condition. Its right hand side folio is backed. The blue pigment of the left folio starts to corrode though the page, affecting the reverse text panel. The marginal areas are clean throughout. Only the expected darker marks left by use can be noticed, although some very occasional darker stains can also be seen, perhaps on three to five folios. The text panels are clean and crisp. They show very scattered smudging.Dated seal impressions in black ink filled in blue ink to first and third last pages, likely export stamps. The last with brief annotation above.The slip case in a fair condition despite a tear to one of its softer side. The gilt is strong overall.

ARR Gillian Ayres CBE RA (1930-2018) Abstract Composition with Circular Forms in Brown and Mauve, signed and dated '61 lower left, oil on paper, 76.5 x 51 cm (SH) Notes: There is a photograph of Gillian at one of her exhibitions, with what appears to be this painting hanging on the wall behind her. Provenance: private collection, purchased from The Molton Gallery, London - label presentCondition:The painting is a work on paper, the original frame is still present - without glazing. There are stains to the four corners from having been stuck down to the frame - there is a resultant hole to the top right corner. There is a large tear through the middle of the sheet- measuring 32 cm- which has been repaired with selotape to the reverse. The top right corner has some small tears to the edges with loss. The top left area of the lower right swirl has some damage (see image) and there are some further holes with loss to the lower right. There is a tear to the centre-edge and creases visible to the front lower left corner. The frame is missing the glazing- the picture is no longer stuck down within the frame. The frame has wear and tear but also mould visible to the front and back from being stored in a cellar. Further images are uploaded to the catalogue.

Ltd. 225 & 226 Tottenham Court Rd, London, Rd. No. 426948, H43cm, W45cm, D41cm. Provenance: Property of the late Kenneth Soper, (1920-1970) prominent local businessman and collector. Then by descent through Sopers of Doncaster, well known family business. The register was in active use by the business from the 1960s to the 2020s.

Royal Navy L.S. & G.C., V.R., narrow suspension (Geo: Humphries, Sh: Ck For Genl. Mess, H.M.S. Assistance.) impressed naming, good very fine £80-£100 --- George Humphries was born in Southsea, Hampshire, in September 1855. He joined the Royal Navy as a Domestic 3rd Class in September 1873, and advanced to Ship’s Cook for General Mess in November 1886. His service included with H.M.S. Assistance from November 1886 to September 1894 (awarded L.S. & G.C. in August 1889). Humphries was shore pensioned in March 1897. Sold with copied service papers.

James Benson was born in Manchester, Lancashire, in October 1853. He joined the Royal Navy as Assistant Baker in September 1873, and advanced to Ship’s Cook 1st Class in August 1883. His service included with H.M.S. Agincourt between October 1880 and November 1882, and H.M.S. Duke of Wellington, between November 1882 and March 1886 (awarded L.S. & G.C. in September 1883. He advanced to Chief Ship’s Cook, and was Shore Pensioned in November 1893. Sold with copied service papers.

His service included with H.M.S. Britannia from January 1859 to September 1889 (awarded L.S. & G.C. in September 1882). Oliver was shore pensioned in September 1889. Sold with copied service papers.
