Nr. 132 (Abb.), Kat. 156Als Maler und Grafiker zählte Anton Faistauer neben Egon Schiele und Oskar Kokoschka zu den wichtigsten Protagonisten der modernen Malerei in Österreich. Der 1887 in Sankt Martin bei Lofer in Salzburg geborene Künstler fand schon früh zu einer autonomen Bildsprache im expressiven Stil. Dabei orientierte er sich an der französischen Malweise von Paul Cézanne, der der Farbe und Form eine besondere Bedeutung gab. Faistauer war Gründungsmitglied der radikalen Künstlervereinigungen "Neukunstgruppe" und "Der Wassermann".Faistauer war nicht nur ein feinfühliger Porträtist namhafter Persönlichkeiten wie dem Schriftsteller Hugo von Hofmannsthal oder dem Maler Franz von Zülow, sondern auch ein begnadeter Landschaftsmaler. Immer wieder zog es den Künstler nach Italien. 1929 malte er das Ölbild "Taormina (Platz des 9. April mit der Kirche di San Giuseppe)". Für das Stadtbild an der Ostküste Siziliens wählte Faistauer ein zentrales Motiv, in dem die historischen Sehenswürdigkeiten wie die barocke Kirche San Giuseppe und der festungsartige Uhrenturm malerisch zur Geltung kommen. Seine Malweise ist geprägt durch den spontanen und skizzenhaften Charakter. Warme Gelb- und Rottöne der Architektur bilden dabei einen Kontrast zu dem satten Blau des wolkenfreien Himmels. Belebt wird die Szenerie von mehreren Figuren, die sich unterhalten beziehungsweise das Geschehen beobachten.Als Faistauer das Bild 1929 malte, war er mit persönlichen und gesundheitlichen Problemen konfrontiert. Der Tod seines guten Freundes Hugo von Hofmannsthal betrübte ihn. Gleichzeitig kämpfte er seit Jahren mit Magen- und Lungenproblemen. Als hätte er eine leise Vorahnung vor dem Tod, schrieb Faistauer sein Testament und ging noch einmal auf Reisen. Er besuchte Venedig, Florenz, Neapel, Taormina und Palermo. Während der Fahrt entstehen zahlreiche Landschaftsbilder, darunter auch das expressive Ölbild "Taormina", das für den dramatischen Wendepunkt im Leben des Künstlers steht. Wenig später, im Februar 1930, starb Faistauer nach einer Magenoperation.(Stefan Üner)
