He read English at Worcester College, Oxford, graduating in 1954. He stayed on as a tutor in Old and Middle English while doing his doctorate on John Cleveland, the cavalier poet. He first made his mark as editor and textual critic of English theatre in the Elizabethan, Jacobean and Caroline periods. Besides a long career with several Universities, he was a published poet, and served on numerous English and Welsh arts committees and was made a life peer in 1990. (3)

JOHN DUNCAN FERGUSSON R.B.A (1874-1961) SUNLIT COTTAGE IN TREES Oil on panel 14cm x 11cm (5.5in x 4.25in) Provenance:A gift from Margaret Morris to Jack Skinner and thence by descent Note:Jack Skinner and his wife Joy worked as the dance partnership Emerson and Jayne. They performed all over Europe and had probably met the Fergussons in the South of France. A postcard from Margaret Morris to Jack Skinner accompanies this lot.
‘Tulip and Rose’ fragment of a William Morris wool ‘triple cloth’ curtain or hanging English (Heckm-ondwike) about 1876 12in. x 68in. 30.5cm. x 173cm. Slight even wear. This is one of William Morris’s earliest designs registered as a fabric in 1876. The present fragment represent only about one third of the vertical design but consists of two complete selvedge widths of 34 inches each joined in the centre. For a ‘complete’ curtain in the same palette see Spinks Costume & Textiles at Spink December 1990 no. 92; interestingly the present fragment fits almost exactly onto the base of the Spink example.
