1869 – Liverpool Golf Club Formation/Opening. 1869 “The Scotsman, Edinburgh”, newspaper dated Wed. June 9, 1869 – announcing the formation of Liverpool Golf Club at Hoylake - on p. 7, 4th and 5th columns – the details such as “The Scotch residents in Liverpool to form a golf club…” another “The Scotch national game of golf was played for the first time on the ground, which should the club prosper…” The first round of golf was between Geo. Morris St Andrews (brother of Tom Morris) and Mr. Robert Chambers of Edinburgh, ex-amateur champion; followed by a foursomes match, including Mr. Dunn (Warrington) and Mr. Morris against Mr. Chambers and Mr. Leslie of Liverpool (acting secretary). The match ended in a draw, followed by the final round of the day between Mr. Chambers and Mr. Dunn, which concluded shortly after 6:00. Note: Liverpool Golf Club is the third oldest golf club in England and one would say, with reference to the above, has prospered having held nearly every major golfing competition since its inception in 1869 incl both Professional and Amateur Tournaments
