Heri Dono Petruk as a Clown, 2020 Acrylic and Chinese Ink on Paper Signed recto 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) Heri Dono is a contemporary Indonesian artist known for his inventive mélange of traditional folk art with contemporary imagery. Throughout his practice, he combines diverse source material such as wayang kulit (shadow puppets), Western pop culture, and socio-political issues in paintings and installations. Born on June 12, 1960 in Jakarta, Indonesia, Dono went on to study at the Indonesian Art Institute in Yogyakarta. His works seek to disrupt and contradict the mainstream narratives of Western art and its control over international art practices. Dono represented Indonesia in the 56th Venice Biennale in 2015 and his works are in the collections of the Deutsche Guggenheim in Frankfurt, the Fukuoka Art Museum in Japan, the Singapore Art Museum, the National Gallery of Australia in Canberra, and the Tropen museum in Amsterdam, among others. He lives and works in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. I create works by combining concepts of Animism and Animated Cartoons. All the most impossible possibilities of life in this world can be illustrated in a work of art."Semar as an Angel" depicts the story of a Semar figure in Java who is actually a godnamed Ismoyo. He incarnates as a human figure and acts as a clown. He criticized the royal officials in the kingdom and sided with the people (wong alit)."Petruk as a Clown" tells the story of Semar's brother in the Punakawan group. One day he became a king and brought humour to the Kingdom. In fact, his position was not that of a statesman."Chatting about Pandemic", is about the current situation where there is an epidemic that does not provide certainty of life. In contemplation we realize that the certainty of life is the uncertainty itself."A Security of Life" illustrates a superhero who doesn't know how to wear underwear. He wears it after wearing trousers. He doesn't realize that his genital is not covered Yogyakarta, Indonesia, 15 October 2020

Megalodon Shark Tooth. This orangish tan Meg tooth has very nice and nearly complete root. Serrations are almost complete. The bourlette is Approx. 75 percent complete. This meg is from West Java Indonesia. Bought directly from the miner that found the tooth. No signs of repair or restoration to this piece. 1.75 inch Shark Tooth for size comparison does not come with this lot.Size: 4.75 x 4.25 in. (#57) "Megalodon" literally "Large Tooth" is a name befitting of the gargantuan prehistoric marine predator. Estimated to have grown to as long as 18 metres (over three times that of the average modern Great White Shark), the Megalodon was the largest shark to have ever existed. It is thought to have had a more stunted jaw and deeper-set eyes than a Great White, with long pectoral fins to offset its bulk. Despite their purported size, no complete fossil skeleton of this extinct species has yet been discovered. Rather, the primary source of information comes from the survival of their fossilized teeth. A fully-grown adult would have had over 250 such teeth at any one time. The tooth of a Megalodon is immediately identifiable by its broad triangular shape with serrated edges, running atop a thick bifurcated root. Particularly fine specimens such as the present selection have been discovered at the bottom of saltwater creeks across North America. Elsewhere, teeth or dental fragments have been found lodged within fossilized whale bones together with vicious bite marks; a lasting testament to the deadly capability of the Megalodon even against the largest of prey. Contrary to the popular conception of the Megalodon as a deep-sea monster, their evolution was actually developed to survive and thrive best in warmer, subtropical waters. For approximately 20 million years the Megalodon roamed the waters of every continent except for Antarctica. This reign finally came to end around 3.6 million years ago, with the period global cooling experienced during the Pilocene era. As a result, much of their habitat was lost to dangerously low temperatures, which in turn led to insufficient fish in the food chain below. With the species now extinct and skeletal remains exceptionally rare or undiscovered altogether, the present group of Megalodon teeth are highly decorative reminders of one of the largest and most dangerous marine creatures ever to have lived.

Lot 887

Portrait of a Balinese young woman, texturized and impasto oil on board, signed upper left: Wolff Sch. Lot includes book on the life and work of C.P. Wolff Schoemaker, entitled Tropical Modernity, by C.J. Van Dullemen. Charles Prosper Wolff Schoemaker was a Dutch architect who designed several distinguished Art Deco buildings in Bandung, Indonesia, including the Villa Isola and Hotel Preanger. He has been described as "the Frank Lloyd Wright of Indonesia," and Wright had a considerable influence on Schoemaker's modernist designs. Although he was primarily known as an architect, he was also a painter and sculptor. Schoemaker was born on Java in a Catholic military family. After training in the Netherlands at the Royal Military Academy, he returned to the Dutch East Indies in 1905, where he worked his way up from officer in the Royal Dutch East Indies Army to director of municipal public works in Batavia. He was converted to Islam and set up an architectural and engineering practice with his brother. After the closing down of the firm he rose to become a valued professor at the Technical University and a famous artist. Schoemaker’s love life with five successive marriages was as non-conformist as that of his student and lifelong friend, Sukarno, the first president of Indonesia. This friendship led to Schoemakers later exclusion by the Indo-European community after the Japanese occupation. He died in the year of Indonesia‘s independence. Overall size: 21 x 15 in. Sight size: 14 1/2 x9 1/4 in.

AN IMPORTANT FANCY PINK DIAMOND AND DIAMOND RING, BY MEISTER, CIRCA 1968The Fancy Pink step-cut diamond, weighing 3.62 carats, between radiating tapered baguette-cut diamond shoulders, unsigned, ring size PFootnotes:Property of an International Collector.Accompanied by a handwritten description of the ring from Meister, dated 16th January 1968, stating the weight as 3.61 carats and describing the diamond as an 'unusual fine pink colour pure stone without flaws'.Accompanied by a report from the GIA stating that the diamond is natural Fancy Pink colour and VS1, Potential clarity. Report number 2195752073, dated 24th September 2020.Accompanied by a report from the GIA stating that the diamond is natural Fancy Pink colour and VS1, Potential clarity. Report number 2195752073, dated 25th October 2018.Pink diamonds are exceedingly rare in nature. It is estimated that only one in 10,000 gem quality diamonds produced in the world show noticeable colour and of these, a similarly small percentage are pink, the majority under 2.00 carats in size. How they occur is romantically enigmatic; unlike most other coloured diamonds, their colour is caused not by trace elements in their chemical composition but by a lucky miracle of nature, a distortion within their atomic lattice caused by the pressure exerted on them during their formation.Throughout millennia of diamond mining, pink diamonds have been unearthed only occasionally, historically in India and later in Brazil, Indonesia and South Africa. The best specimens have been kept as treasures in the collections of royalty, rulers and museums, sought after and celebrated for their elusive beauty. Traditionally considered a gemmological curiosity, the last 50 years have seen a great shift in perception. In the late 1970s, pink diamond-bearing lamproite rock was discovered at the Argyle mine in East Kimberley, Western Australia producing a limited but steady number of small fine quality pink and red diamonds each year. The mine quickly became recognised as the only consistent source in the world. This small but regular supply, alongside informative marketing campaigns, piqued industry and public interest in pink diamonds and the rarity of coloured diamonds. The last few decades have seen the value of fine coloured diamonds increase exponentially. With the Argyle mine forecast to cease operations by 2020, the future of pink diamond mining is uncertain as there are no other known mines with such a consistent production; pink diamonds may become increasingly rare. This beautiful stone possesses an exceptional combination of characteristics. The Gemological Institute of America has graded it as Fancy Pink colour and VS1 clarity, improvable to potentially flawless. It is extremely unusual to find a pure pink diamond, of a high clarity grade and no secondary modifying component colours. Bonhams is delighted to offer such an important pink diamond for sale. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Qur'ans from this region are uncommon to the market and the watermarks throughout this copy are of the "Pro Patria" paper-stock, most comparable to Churchill's no. 136 and 136 (Watermarks in Paper, Amsterdam 1935), which was widely circulated for the continental market in the late eighteenth century, firmly placing the copying of this example in the (likely late) eighteenth century.Only three comparable examples have appeared at auction in the last decade, all of which included the three double-page decorations (to the front, middle and end of the volumes) and were all copied on western watermarked paper. Christie's sold a copy on the 4 October 2012 (lot 285) that was described as "late 18th or early 19th century" and on European watermarked paper (although the specifics were not identified), then Bonhams sold a similar example on the 8 April 2014 (lot 16) that was also described as "late 18th or early 19th century" that endorsed "European watermarked paper (probably Dutch, bearing a coat of arms and the letters P V H)". Most recently Sotheby's sold a fine example that was dated 1315 AH (1897-98 AD) which was produced on Galvani Italian watermarked paper, this realising a staggering £30,000 hammer against a pre-sales estimate of £3,000-5,000.
