BOODLES: TWO-STONE FANCY COLOURED DIAMOND AND DIAMOND RINGThe cushion-shaped Fancy Purplish Pink diamond, weighing 2.52 carats, obliquely-set with an Ashoka-cut diamond, weighing 3.23 carats, in an 18 carat rose gold and platinum setting, each gallery with ribbon detail, pavé-set with brilliant-cut diamonds of pink and near colourless tint, signed Boodles, maker's B&D, London hallmark, ring size I, maker's caseFootnotes:Accompanied by a report from GIA stating that the cushion-shaped diamond, weighing 2.52 carats, is natural Fancy Purplish Pink colour, VS1 clarity. Report number 2135644037, dated 4th August 2011.Accompanied by a report from GIA stating that the Ashoka-cut diamond, weighing 3.23 carats, is D colour, VVS1 clarity. Report number 16255366, dated 14th July 2021.Accompanied by a report from GIA stating that the Ashoka-cut diamond, weighing 3.23 carats, is D colour, Internally Flawless clarity. Report number 16255366, dated 20th September 2007.Pink diamonds are exceedingly rare in nature. It is estimated that only one in 10,000 gem quality diamonds produced in the world show noticeable colour and of these, a similarly small percentage are pink, the majority under 2.00 carats in size. How they occur is romantically enigmatic; unlike most other coloured diamonds, their colour is caused not by trace elements in their chemical composition but by a lucky miracle of nature, a distortion within their atomic lattice caused by the pressure exerted on them during their formation.Throughout millennia of diamond mining, pink diamonds have been unearthed only occasionally, historically in India and later in Brazil, Indonesia and South Africa. The best specimens have been kept as treasures in the collections of royalty, rulers and museums, sought after and celebrated for their elusive beauty. Traditionally considered a gemmological curiosity, the last 50 years have seen a great shift in perception. In the late 1970s, pink diamond-bearing lamproite rock was discovered at the Argyle mine in East Kimberley, Western Australia producing a limited but steady number of small fine quality pink and red diamonds each year. The mine quickly became recognised as the only consistent source in the world. This small but regular supply, alongside informative marketing campaigns, piqued industry and public interest in pink diamonds and the rarity of coloured diamonds. The last few decades have seen the value of fine coloured diamonds increase exponentially. After nearly forty years of operation, the Argyle mine ceased production last year and since there are no other known mines with such a consistent production, pink diamonds are set to become increasingly rare. The Ashoka-cut lends its name, and was inspired by, the original Ashoka Diamond - a 41.37 carat, D colour, Flawless diamond - from the highly coveted Golconda mine in India. This original diamond was itself named after Ashoka the Great, who ruled in India during the 3rd Century BC. Ashoka the Great was known initially for his bloodthirsty military conquests, but legend has it after surveying the death and destruction his army had caused in capturing the region of Kalinga, his feeling of remorse was so severe he transformed his ways, becoming a pacifist and promoting the spread of Buddhism - believing the true path of enlightenment could only be achieved through tranquillity, hence the naming of the original diamond.Based on the Ashoka Diamond, New York diamantaire, William Goldberg, developed and patented the Ashoka-cut in 2000, and Boodles are the only British jeweller to offer Ashoka-cut diamonds in their collection. The Ashoka-cut displays an additional five facets to the 57 facets of brilliant-cuts, requiring the rough diamond to be larger and longer than average, and it is known for its typically larger 'spread', enabling the polished diamond to appear larger when viewed face-up.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Antonio Blanco (Filipino, 1912-1999)Reclining nude with devil mask, large glass flask and bananassigned 'Antonio Blanco' (lower centre) oil on canvas 31.5 x 42cm (12 3/8 x 16 1/2in).in frame with arched topFootnotes:ProvenanceAcquired directly from the artist by the present owner's father, circa. 1968.Antonio Blanco revelled in a bounteous and extravagant artistic vision. He was born in the Philippines to Spanish parents and schooled in Manila. He would then go on to study at the National Academy of Art in New York. It is here that he cultivated an interest in figurative painting which would stay with him throughout his life. Having been gifted some land in Ubud, Bali, by the King of Ubud, Blanco settled in Indonesia in 1952. Here, he married the dancer Ni Ronji and fashioned himself as an eccentric aristocrat, steeped in artistic and cultural knowledge. It is in Bali where Blanco was inspired, and his work reached its full potential. Here, his sitters are imbued with sensual potential, at once desirous and desirable. His mood and imageries are passionate yet playful. This tone is clearly struck in the Reclining nude offered here, as the sitter lays in a suggestive manner whilst surrounded by myriad symbols of both sensuality and lust. Most notable of these being Blanco's recurring motifs of fruit, a devil mask, a large glass flask and fine wisps of smoke emanating from an incense burner.Blanco lived and worked in Ubud until his death in 1999. His work was consistent throughout this time as he endeavoured to capture the sensual essence of his muses, both real and fantasied. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Large Balinese double-ikat Gringsing Wayang cloth made in 1970-1980 in red yellow cream and black, 160cm x 83cm plus fringing Condition Report: Good overall condition Worn by villagers of Tenganan (considered to be the natives of Bali) as part of rituals and ceremonies. The native Balinese believe Gringsing cloths are sacred, and possess protective power to sustain life, ward off disease and maintain life balance. Larger cloths like this takes years to produce and is rare to find in this size. This is two separate Grinsing cloths stitched together. Typically, these are made small - scarf size. Large ones are particularly rare. The Gringsing pattern is known for having four pointed stars, with 4 scorpions inside the star guarding a square fort. The square fort represents Sumbul, a symbol of sustainable living. There is further symbolism in the colours: red (fire), cream/yellow (air), black (water). If these three elements can be balanced, then life will continue to be sustainable. All Grinsing cloths are made of natural cotton yarn, and can be decorated with geometrical flowers motifs, stars or crosses. The double-ikat cloth is one of the rarest and most complex textiles in the world. Hand made in only 3 places worldwide - small villages in Bali (Indonesia), India and Japan. This cloth was made in Bali in the remote village of Tenganan. Double-ikat is the process by which both the vertical and horizontal (warp and weft) threads are dyed with natural pigments in complex patterns (and according to specific rituals) before weaving on a back-strap loom. The final design is achieved by combining these threads patterns into carefully preconceived ornamental form. This is an extremely complex and time consuming process in order to ensure the pattern is carried by both the warp and the weft. Everything is hand made and natural, including colouring the thread. Thread colours (red, black, cream/yellow) are all natural, and the colours oxidises over time, with the red turning into a beautiful deep red hue
