There is good detail of the coastline and numerous smaller islands located throughout. North is oriented to the right with the ""equinoctiall line"" passing through Sumatra. Also included with the map is 184 pp. of related text (4.8 x 7.5""). William Dampier (1652-1715) was a soldier, buccaneer, pirate, British navy captain and hydrographer. He was also among the most influential of travel writers. Dampier completed his first circumnavigation between 1679 and 1691, during which he was among the first group of Englishmen to land in New Holland (Australia). Chinese Tibetan Bronze Buddha This Bronze sculpture was dug from the ground circa 1920 near a tree by a Dutch Army Captain preparing a place to sleep. This soldier was part of a military force sent to abolish the practice of headhunting that was common in Hindia Belanda which is now present day Indonesia. It was brought to the Netherlands by this soldier when he returned home from the conflict and passed down through his family and eventually owned by the soldier`s granddaughter who is now retired in Florida. her wish is to remain anonymous.

History: The `Tek Sing` (or `True Star`) was a large three-masted Chinese ocean-going junk which sank, after running aground on a reef in the Gaspar Strait, on 6th February 1822. It had sailed from Amoy (now Xiamen, in Fujian province, China) and was bound for Batavia in the Dutch East Indies (now Jakarta, Indonesia), laden with a cargo of porcelain and 1600 Chinese immigrants, most of whom lost their lives. Following the discovery of the wreck in 1999 the salvageable cargo was raised from the sea bed, having lain undisturbed for nearly 180 years.

John Saris was a Captain who commanded the first English voyage to Japan in 1613 in an effort to establish trade relations. This map depicts the route of Saris` voyage, extending from India in the west to Indonesia in the east. India appears in an almost trapezoidal shape, and the mythical Chiamai L. is depicted in China with four southerly flowing rivers. New Guinea is given a thin, elongated shape, and the northern tip of Nova Hollandia (Australia) is shown. This map was published in van der Aa`s compilation of early voyages of exploration. This small, attractive chart depicts the island of Sulawesi (formerly Celebes), situated east of Borneo in Indonesia. There is good topographical detail, and towns and cities are noted, including the island`s largest city Makassar (or Ujung Pandang) on the southwest coast. Several smaller offshore islands appear as well. A note in the Gulf of Boni (here called Golphe de Saleyer) indicates that the gulf is filled with sand banks. A nice impression. 5.9"" W x 8.3"" H . This sea chart of Papua New Guinea shows the new discoveries of Captains Cook, Carteret, and Dampier along New Guinea, New Britain, and New Ireland. The chart details the path of Captain Cook`s voyage along the southwestern coast of the island of New Guinea in today`s Irian Jaya, Indonesia`s easternmost province. Cook sailed between Australia and New Guinea and proved the existence of the Strait of Torres. The chart also details the explorations of Carteret and Dampier which focused on the northern portion of New Guinea and the nearby Pacific islands. Engraved by Thomas Conder.
