With the signature of Thomas Howell, dated 1852, on the title page. The first substantial selection of early Welsh poetry to be published bringing the author immediate and lasting fame. It satisfied the desire of English antiquaries for information on Welsh literature. The work was printed at the expense of Daines Barrington. (1)

English School THE S.S. ‘FLORENCE’ Gouache, with literature and official paper work relating to same from first class engineer (March 1897-October 1900) Richard George Howell, a photograph of Mr Howell and of the S.S. ‘Florence’ loading at Fowey, 38 x 56cm. Built in Middlesborough 1881 and registered in Stockerton, it foundered in 1924 after hitting rocks when leaving berth at Port Na Long. It was towed towards Lough Swilly but sank off Buncrana, and remains there five fathoms under the sea.

A Lowestoft Blue and White Transfer Printed Porcelain Small Teapot and Cover, circa 1775], of compressed spherical form, the lid and body printed with the "Good Cross Chapel" (a cluster of buildings with gateway and tower) within barbed reserves, the flattened spherical knop with X flowerhead, a single sprig printed beneath the spout, 9.5cm high *A small bowl in this pattern was sold as part of the Watney Collection of Fine Early English Porcelain Part III, Phillips Auctioneers, 1 November 2000, lot 1005, where the foot note states “A cream jug with the Good Cross Chapel is illustrated as figure 190a, see John Howell, “Transfer-Printed Lowestoft, ECC Trans, vol.7, pt.3. Howell quotes local sources for the possible origin of this print. The chapel, on the coast at the south end of the town, was destroyed by the sea in the 16th century.
A jewelled gilt-bronze inkwell and matching candlesticks, Howell, James & Co., London, circa 1870-80 spherical with spreading base and loop handle, incised with trailing vine leaves picked out with faceted red stones within turquoise bead borders, the candlesticks en suite height of candlesticks 12.7cm, 5in, in original locking case Howell, James & Company was founded, in 1819, originally as silk mercers and jewellers. The firm expanded both staff and stock over the following decades, employing over 100 workers by 1865 and selling all manner of fine goods, including items by designers and students of the South Kensington School.

The gun was completed circa 1935 (see lot 618 for illustration)
