Howell (James) Dendrologia [graece]. Dodona's Grove, or, the Vocall Forrest, first edition, engraved frontispiece, title with large engraved vignette of gardeners and typographical border, 2 engraved plates, all by M. Merian, woodcut head-pieces and initials, a few ink notes to margins in later hand and single leaf manuscript list in later hand mounted on stub to endpaper, frontispiece with closed tear or incision to gutter margin, contemporary calf, upper cover detached, spine ends chipped and upper cover corners repaired, rubbed, [STC 13872; Pforzheimer 512], folio, by T[homas] B[adger] for H. Moseley, 1640.*** A clean first edition copy of Howell's elaborate arboreal allegory. A second part was published in 1650 encompassing up to date events, in 8vo, as were all subsequent editions.
A 19th Century French gilt brass repeating carriage alarm clock, the white enamel Roman dial signed 'Howell, James & Co, to the Queen, London & Paris', with subsidiary Arabic alarm dial, the mask, case and back plate profusely engraved with scrolling foliage, platform lever escapement, alarm and repeat button, striking on a single gong, stamped '5870' to reverse and underside, 17.5cms high with handle raised.

A James Purdey & Sons silver cased novelty butt marker holder of shotgun cartridge form with screw-off percussion cap, detailed 'J. Purdey and Sons London 10', opening to reveal a fitted interior holding ten marker pegs, each numbered, the body of the shell hallmarked London 1988, maker's mark probably Margaret Howell, length 7cm. Provenance: the property of a Hampshire private collector.

Howell, London, with Damascus steel barrels, barrel length 69.5cm, foliate locks and hammers and scrolling steel trigger guard, full-stocked with chequered grip and ebonized ramrod with brass tip. Provenance: the property of a Hampshire private collector.
LINNIE WATT (British, fl. 1880-1907) A street scene at Dinan, with children attempting to hook a basket from a gentleman to the left, Signed with monogram, oil on canvas: 52 x 44cm, in painted frame (62.5 x 54cm over-all).Note: Linnie Watt joined Doulton’s Lambeth studio in 1875 after a fire destroyed Minton’s Art Pottery Studio in London. She specialized in painting Faience plaques featuring idyllic rural scenes. Apparently, she sketched a lot from nature and had the habit of bribing her human subjects to stand still. Unfortunately, they rarely did for more than a minute so she became a very rapid sketcher.Miss Watt's work was shown at the Philadelphia and Paris Exhibitions and she was a regular prize winner at the annual china painting shows organised by Howell and James in London. She was awarded first prize in 1878 and a silver medal the following year. Miss Watt exhibited paintings at the Royal Academy between 1877 and 1901 and was a member of the Society of Lady Artists from 1874. She also illustrated books, for example Out of Town by F. E. Weatherly, 1884.John Sparkes, the principal of the Lambeth School of Art, spoke very highly of her: “She has a most distinguished gift for conveying the impression of a picturesque scene with rustic figures, in excellent color, and with artistic breadth of effect, quite admirable in its truth. Her works will speak for themselves to every artist who sees them.”

An English gilt brass sewing companion complete with outer leather case, circa 1860, the hinged oval gilt brass case lined in silk to the lid with gilt inscription 'Howell James and Co. Silversmiths and Jewellers To Her Majesty, 6, 7 and 8, Regent Street', the base section flush fitted into green velvet with a selection of tools comprising a steel single blade knife matched, a silver gilt handled stiletto, a similar needle case, a pair of steel bladed scissors with silver gilt arms and loops complete with sheath, a gilt metal bodkin matched, and a frosted gilt thimble, possibly matched, 13.5cms, in original brown leather outer case with slight loss to catch area, the lid with conforming gilt inscription, 14.5cms.
