SILVER PLATED TEA KNIVES & FORKS a part service with mother of pearl handles, intricately engraved with shell and scroll motifs on blades and fork prongs. Together with a similar serrated knife. In original oak presentation box with key, retailed by John Howell & Sons Sheffield. Printed in the Year 1648. Printed secretly, with the dedicatory signed off Philocrates. Featuring verses by George Wither, Elias Ashmole and James Howell; with an elegy & table to verso. Illustrated with engraved frontispiece by Marshall. Later full calf binding, edges speckled red, front board near loose, spine label lacking, extremities bumped & spine rubbed. Heraldic bookplate to front pastedown, clipping regarding the work pasted to ffep, 1840s bookseller's label to verso of ffep and collation notes in a 19th century hand to following ffep; the work appearing complete. A scarce & anonymously published work remembering Sir Charles Lucas & Sir George Lisle, two prominent Royalists who were executed by Roundheads during the Wars of the Three Kingdoms. This work heralded them as Royalist martyrs, detailing the events of the siege & their subsequent executions. 12mo.

Peter Howell (b. 1932), Horses and Jockeys before the Race Start, signed 'Howell' (lower left), oil on canvas, 100.5 x 126 cm, framed 113 x 139 cmUnlined. Some frame abrasion visible to edges, with minor losses in places. A couple of specks of loss on horse's leg, lower right. Scattered areas of craquelure throughout. There are two small areas of loss in the upper right quadrant. Some light surface dirt. No evidence of restoration visible under UV light.
