A tourmaline and gold ring by Bulguri, the oval-shaped cabochon pink touramline is set in yellow gold with heavy fluted shoulders and shank. Signed Bulgari. Size I 1/2. With Bulgari case. Believed to have originally been bought by Elizabeth Taylor and is accompanied with the following postcard of Elizabeth Taylor with a note to the reverse from Tom Rand dated September 2016, "In 1988 I was asked by Franco Zeffirelli to design the costumes for the film Young Toscanini, that he was planning to direct. The film was to star C Thomas Howell and Elizabeth Taylor. She was to play a Russian Opera Diva, the mistress of the Emperor of Brazil and he was to be Toscanini. During our period of filming in Rome, Elizabeth arranged an evening shopping to Bulgari, where she was well known. She asked her secretary, Roger Wall and I to go with her. She bought herself a watch with diamonds and she bought me this gold and tourmaline ring."
A carved ruby and diamond set ring, the oval-shape ruby has carved foliate decoration and is set in a surround of round brilliant-cut diamonds and two larger diamonds in gold. Gilt metal shank. Size R, but expands. This ring was made for Elizabeth Taylor when she starred in the Franco Zeffirelli film Young Toscanini in 1988. She was cast as the opera diva Nadina Bulichoff. Accompanied with the book Franco Zeffirelli Complete Works. On page 465 Elizabeth Taylor can be seen wearing the carved ruby and diamond ring and is talking to Zeffirelli. Accompanied with a postcard of Elizabeth Taylor with a note to the reverse from Tom Rand dated September 2016 saying, "In 1988 I was asked by Franco Zeffirelli to design the costumes for his forthcoming film Young Toscanini. C Thomas Howell was to play the conductor and Elizabeth Taylor was to play an Opera Diva, the mistress of the Emperor of Brazil. A true story. After a performance of Aiola in the 1870s the Emperor sent the singer a bouquet of roses with a ruby ring hidden within. Knowing Elizabeth Taylor's love of jewels, Zeffirelli though it would be amusing for the ring not be the paste reproduction I was planning to do, but to be a ruby and diamond ring. A Roman jeweller made the ring. At the end of the film the ring was given to Elizabeth. What she actually wanted, and she always got what she wanted, particularly jewels, was a pair of costume earrings which I had made in London. So she gave me the diamond and ruby ring in exchange for the earrings which remained in her collection of "costume jewels" for the rest of her life. Both the earrings and the ring are in the photograph".
MINING SATIRE: Mining & Miners, and Diggers & Priggers. By a Shareholder. London: W. Kent & Co.,1854, first edition of a very rare satire, complete with 15 lithograph plates (Kurutz calls for only 13). 8vo. pp: 28, and errata slip at end. An extremely amusing and rare satire on the heights of folly that accompanied the California Gold Rush, personified in the character of 'Tom Tiddler.' ‘The author lampoons gold companies, like the delightful 'Great Doo and Diddle Gold, Silver, Copper, and Brass, Smash, Dash and Crash Company,' and comments on the feverish effect of the word 'gold' on people's imagination. 'Prigger' is defined as a thief. 'Tom Tiddler' can be translated as any place where pickings may be sought or had without effective interference’ - Howell. ‘This satirical piece is based on the experience of the English who invested in California and Australian mines. The company's holdings were located in the 'Moschetto and Torpedo Districts' of California’- Kurutz; BOUND WITH Watson, Joseph Yelloly: The Progress of Mining in 1854, with remarks upon the failure of gold mining in England.
